An eye-opening account of a young pilots path to becoming a Top-Cat carrier fighter pilot!
I loved this account of the process involved with becoming a naval aviator, especially knowing is was written by a person who relates many of his personal experiences. As a retired navel officer and carrier fighter pilot, William H. Labarge writes with authority and knowledge, giving the book a realism that is not present in many military novels.
I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys books about military situations, especially to young people who might be considering Navel Aviation as a career. Mr. Labarge tells it "as it is", the excitement and adventure, as well as the "down and dirty" aspects of flying fighters, including emergency landings, or what happens when you have diarrhea at 25000 feet!
    Great book
I always have enjoyed reading how the Navy trains it's pilots and this book really did a great job. I highly recommend it
Page-turning action turns a young man into a fighter pilot
It is always far more than training that develops the skills of a navy pilot to take off and land on the deck of a carrier in the midst of a storm at night. This is a beautifully written overview of the things that bring out the best. The skills, friendships, teamwork and sheer nerve to strap on tons of high velocity steel and electronics and make it move as needed are nearly overwhelming. A grand read and well worth the time.
A Tough Road to become a Naval Aviator
Excellent book on what it takes to become a naval aviator, especially good with the details on the amount of time, study, and absolute determination to succeed that is required. If you liked "An Officer and a Gentlemen" then you'll love this book. The author was apparently a consultant on "Top Gun". Well written, although a little slow in spots, the ending was terrific. I recommend.
    Good read
I enjoyed this book because it is very easy to follow. Every thing is good and I was on this ship.

Perla understands that her parents were on the wrong side of the conflict, but her love for her papá is unconditional. Talking to the Dead
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Plot move faster. The idea that someone just shows up, dead, and draining water was hard to accept, believe, or enjoy.
Would you be willing to try another book from Carolina De Robertis? Why or why not?
I would read another book by her. She can write well and expand on setting and descriptions. Her vocabulary was excellent.
What aspect of Carolina De Robertiss performance would you have changed?
Her voice and intonation was the same for all characters. I did not enjoy listening to her read it.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
The character, Perla, struggling to come to terms with her pastno problem. Her boyfriend, for his young age of 25, it was not easy to believe that he had the maturity to deal with her. She rehashed the same thing, Perla that is, so much that it was hard not to feel exasperated.
Not a book I enjoyed much.
Latin American writing at its best
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. I was really moved by the way a political story about Argentinia's disappeared was told so beautifully and I loved the language. Unlike the other reviewer I didn't mind at all that a dead man/ ghost turned up in a living room. Whether you call it magical realism or whatever - this is a story about the past returning to the present and trying to make peace with it. The past happens to be personified and not 'factual' and to me that's a bonus.
What did you like best about this story?
As per above - the idea of the past returning as a missing person. And also the language. Poetic and visual, potently emotional without being trite. I kept on re-listening.
What aspect of Carolina De Robertiss performance might you have changed?
It took me a while to get used to the reading. It's true that all the characters sound the same, it's not read by an actor who impersonates the different people. But after a while I didn't mind and the voice and style of reading actually went with the content book. With the impersonation it could have sounded like theatre - this was a less tangible story that took shape in my head in a very personal way.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
I hope they don't make a film of this. You couldn't play the disappeared man from the past who turns up in the living room without him looking like a zombie.

In a seedy bar in Hollywood, a whiskey-loving barman is drawn into the nocturnal world of his sociopathic clientele, with their squabbles, delusions, and bizarre acts of violence. In this brilliantly funny portrait of addiction and its consequences, escape offers the only chance of survival. Utterly absorbing and surprisingly tender, Ablutions is a startlingly bold and original debut.

    Unmissable
Where does Ablutions rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
One of the best. Rarely do you find a book which stands out so far above the rest. I wonder how someone can gain such an insight into humanity.
What other book might you compare Ablutions to, and why?
Perhaps something by Michel Houellebecq in so far as the style is so different. It is like a different language.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
No single scene, they are all fascinating.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Consider this..
    Not what I expected
I struggled a little with the concept of this book - re-listened several times - overall was a pretty good but hopeless story of the struggle with the demon drink - I heard it is also a play - would like to see that.

The blockbuster best-selling author of Night Road and Firefly Lane delivers a masterful novel that explores the sacrifices of one American family and illuminates the true cost of honor, duty, and love.

    Members Reviews:
Kristin Hannah has done it once again.
Marvelous and heart warming of a family struggling to deal with military issues, that take them all where they never thought they would be, courage, love, disparate for answers. Lots of tissues needed for this one and once again a hit for Kristin Hannah.
Definitely wish I had read and not listened....
I love Kristin Hannah, a big fan of her books. However, the narration on this book was almost unbearable. Completely over dramatic, too screechy, too much. I found this to be an informative and interesting storyline, but I wish I had read a hardcopy rather than the audible. I breathed a sigh of relief when I was finally finished.

    Publisher's Summary:
Tzippy Goldman was born for marriage. She and her mother had always assumed she'd graduate high school, be set up with the right boy, and have a beautiful wedding with white lace and pareve vanilla cream frosting. But at 22, Tzippy's fast approaching spinsterhood. She dreams of escape; instead, she leaves for a year in Jerusalem.
There she meets - re-meets - Baruch, the son of her mother's college roommate. When Tzippy last saw him, his name was Bryan and he wore a Yankees-logo yarmulke. Now he has adopted the black hat of the ultra-orthodox, the tradition in which Tzippy was raised. Twelve weeks later, they're engaged... and discovering that desire and tradition, devotion and individuality aren't the easiest balance.
Hilarious, compassionate, and tremendously insightful, The Outside World illuminates an insular community, marvelously depicting that complicated blend of faith, love, and family otherwise known as life in a modern world.
    Critic Reviews:
"At times giddily humorous, at times stirring and sorrowful, Mirvis's insightful novel is packed with convincing detail, from descriptions of yarmulkes (fancifully embroidered or stolid black velvet) to the varieties of wigs worn by married ultra-Orthodox women. The characters' frequent use of distinctively Jewish terms and ideas gives the novel a foreign air, but the universal themes of growing up and choosing a fitting life to lead will resonate with readers of all faiths." Publisher's Summary:
Traditions that have lasted for centuries, both brutal and beautiful, create a rigid structure for life in the wild, astonishing place where Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan meet - the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). It is a formidable world, and the people who live there are constantly subjected to extremes-of place and of culture. The Wandering Falcon begins with a young couple, refugees from their tribe, who have traveled to the middle of nowhere to escape the cruel punishments meted out upon those who transgress the boundaries of marriage and family. Their son, Tor Baz, descended from both chiefs and outlaws, becomes "The Wandering Falcon," a character who travels among the tribes, over the mountains and the plains, into the towns and the tents that constitute the homes of the tribal people. The media today speak about this unimaginably remote region, a geopolitical hotbed of conspiracies, drone attacks, and conflict, but in the rich, dramatic tones of a master storyteller, this stunning, honor-bound culture is revealed from the inside.
    Critic Reviews:
"I''ve been talking about this book to anyone who will listen. From page one, I was transported to a land of nomadic tribes who live and die by ancestral codes. But The Wandering Falcon is not only about tribes. It is about honor, love, loyalty, and grace. And it is about borders--geographical, political, and personal. The terrain where Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan meet may be cruel and unforgiving, but every page of this book is filled with beauty and humanity. By the final pages, I found myself transformed." (The New York Times)
"A striking debut...The power and beauty of these stories are unparalleled in most fiction to come out of south Asia." (The Guardian)
"Tautly written... Fantastic... Drawn with tenderness but without sentimentality... Ahmad is a deft storyteller and his slim volume possesses a strong allure." (Financial Times)

I couldn't stop listening the book.
Loved it. I loved how the main character became a lot like her friend. I felt so bad for Rex the entire book.
Get Ready For A Great Listen
I loved this book. Told in the first person by Karen the story reveals how mistakes made in youth can come back to haunt you with dire consequences. The narrator, Jennifer Ikeda, did a great job with the English accent and only a few words led me to believe she wasn't English herself. I looked her up and found she is American. Still an excellent job done with a brilliant story. Just bought Erin Kelly's He Said- She Said because I enjoyed The Poison Tree so much.
    Ugh--wasted hours blah blah blah
Not worth a credit. Takes forever to get going and I've got 4 hours left. I never leave a book unfinished but I'll be deleting from device
The most important character is unconvincing
The story is good. It has element of Barbara Vine, concentrating on the bohemian life of young people on the edge of society in London.
But.... we are supposed to love and root for one of the major female characters. And I didn't. She was just annoying, flirtatious, and shallow. Needed a full re-write to fix that person.
