Need a better Laurie Colwin narrator
I am a HUGE Laurie Colwin fan, and I feel awful complaining since I am astoundingly happy to finally have Laurie Colwin's books on audio. However, the reader of HOME COOKING is much better suited to Laurie Colwin's writing than this particular narrator.
This narrator is not BAD, he's just not right for Laurie Colwin. He would be a great narrator for the newsreel, NEWS OF THE WORLD. He is clear and can be understood. His voice is just not the right voice for a light, witty novel about love and manners.
For those who have come to love Laurie Colwin's stories, essays and novels there can be no greater treat than having audio recordings available. I thank Audible for having started to make these recordings available. However, I do think it's important to choose appropriate readers for the texts. This is also part of the art of making wonderful audiobooks.
This particular audio is preferable to no audio recordings of Laurie Colwin's work. But a better pairing of reader with text is definitely possible.
    An old favorite
This book can still be found in the librarian's personal library. It is a humorous book. It stands alone among the hundreds of thousands of romance fictions published in the US. Try it.
    Teenaged writing
I didn't like anything about this book. Waste of time. Someone should go through the text and count how many times the word said was used. VERY sophomoric.

    Publisher's Summary:
Complicity n. 1. the fact of being an accomplice, esp. in a criminal act.
A few spliffs, a spot of mild S&M, phone through the copy of tomorrow's front page, catch up with the latest from your mystery source - could be big, could be very big - in fact, just a regular day at the office for free-wheeling, substance-abusing Cameron Colley, a fully paid-up Gonzo hack on an Edinburgh newspaper. The source is pretty thin, but Cameron senses a scoop and checks out a series of bizarre deaths from a few years ago - only to find that the police are checking out a series of bizarre deaths that are happening right now. And Cameron just might know more about it than he'd care to admit.
    Critic Reviews:
"A remarkable novel...superbly crafted, funny, and intelligent." (Financial Times)
"A stylishly executed and well-produced study of fear, loathing, and victimisation which moves towards doom in measured steps." (Observer)
    "Ingenious, daring, and brilliant." (Guardian)

    Slow DOWN!
What did you like best about Complicity? What did you like least?
I'm only halfway though it but the plot is good and I like Iain Banks' novels.
Would you recommend Complicity to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes, but only if you can cope with someone who's reading as if they're racing to the finish line.
What didnt you like about Peter Kennys performance?
He reads too fast and in a rather jaunty tone of voice that doesn't really suit the story. I thought my music player was on double speed.
Why do I like this so much? ....
I'm not a Scottish young male journo with a drug habit; this book is grim, brutal, uncompromising and convoluted ...so why do I like this so much?
I like it because Iain B. makes you think. He challenges your preconceptions, delights in startling you and gives you a mental workout. I like it because he invents strong, believable characters and puts them in hideous situations with storylines that are unpredictable and challenging. I like it because his dark and difficult books are clever, engaging and enjoyable to read. They put footprints all over your brain.
Iain Banks is simply brilliant, with and without the M. His books steal a bit of headspace and never really leave you.
Peter Kenny deserves a mention too. He is a great narrator and really brings the characters and stories to life with a subtlety that others lack. I love his work.
I thoroughly recommend all of the Banks audio books, perhaps with the exception of Feersum Endjinn. Get that in print as half the fun is in the spelling.
    Golden Banks
I never read this one the first time around and it was good to catch up on this. I love the constant references to his Tosh and fascination with the new technology of the period. A Toshiba lap top with a colour screen - magic! OK - so not one of his best, but I kind of read or listen to Iain Banks because I love his Iain M Banks so much.
Heard he was on his last legs in the papers last week. This is devastating! He is just one of the good guys, we need him! Also saw critics in the papers claim his Fiction is better than his SF - what?!
Please, Please, Please - someone call the Culture and get him into a med box and fix him - now, this is an order! 13/4/13
Banks at his non Sci-Fi best
This is excellent, gritty and compelling Banks. And Peter Kenny is excellent also.

When George McCaffreys car plunges into a canal with his wife still inside, nobody knows whether George is to blame. Nobody, that is, except an Anglican priest who happened to witness the whole thing. And when Georges former teacher, the charismatic philosopher Rozanov, returns to town, Georges life begins to spin wildly out of control. Set in the English spa town of Ennistone, The Philosophers Pupil is a darkly comic story of love, redemption, and the complex nature of the human condition.

A Trip Down a philosophical Lane
Murdoch is in high style in this novel with an engaging story that keeps unfolding against a subtle background of moral philosophy. As in her other books she anchors twisty philosophical issues in a cunning narrative but for anyone with a minimal sense of the subject Murdoch provides both entertainment and enlightenment. For example, it doesn't take much to see that the disheveled, mainly anti-social philosopher of the title is based on Socrates, that the action, mainly set around a second-rate spa in Britain (known as the "Institute") registers the Greek-Roman focus on the town bath as the center of social life. etc. The plot goes a bit off the rails from time to time, and the book is too long for its own good, but I enjoyed it. The reading is very fine.
Murdoch is a l ways brilliant
    Gildart Jackson is puré genius.
What a delightful way to reread an old familiar novel.

    Title: The Tin Horse

    Narrator: Kate McGregor-Stewart
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-29-13
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 59 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
In the stunning tradition of Lisa See, Maeve Binchy, and Alice Hoffman, The Tin Horse is a rich multigenerational story about the intense, often fraught bond sisters share and the dreams and sorrows that lay at the heart of the immigrant experience.
It has been more than 60 years since Elaine Greensteins twin sister, Barbara, ran away, cutting off contact with her family forever. Elaine has made peace with that loss. But while sifting through old papers as she prepares to move to Rancho Mañana - or the 'Ranch of No Tomorrow' as she refers to the retirement community - she is stunned to find a possible hint to Barbaras whereabouts all these years later. And it pushes her to confront the fierce love and bitter rivalry of their youth during the 1920s and 30s, in the Los Angeles Jewish neighborhood of Boyle Heights.
Though raised together in Boyle Heights, where kosher delis and storefront signs in Yiddish lined the streets, Elaine and Barbara staked out very different personal territories. Elaine was thoughtful and studious, encouraged to dream of going to college, while Barbara was a bold rule-breaker whose hopes fastened on nearby Hollywood. In the fall of 1939, when the girls were 18, Barbaras recklessness took an alarming turn. Leaving only a cryptic note, she disappeared.
In an unforgettable voice layered with humor and insight, Elaine delves into the past. She recalls growing up with her spirited family: her luftmensch of a grandfather, a former tinsmith with tales from the Old Country; her papa, who preaches the American Dream even as it eludes him; her mercurial mother, whose secret grief colors her moods - and of course audacious Barbara and their younger sisters, Audrey and Harriet. As Elaine looks back on the momentous events of history and on the personal dramas of the Greenstein clan, she must finally face the truth of her own childhood, and that of the twin sister she once knew.
In The Tin Horse, Janice Steinberg exquisitely unfolds a rich multigenerational story about the intense, often fraught bonds between sisters, mothers, and daughters and the profound and surprising ways we are shaped by those we love. At its core, it is a book not only about the stories we tell but, more important, those we believe, especially the ones about our very selves.

The Tin Horse redefines black sheep of the family
Would you listen to The Tin Horse again? Why?
This story was compelling albeit lengthy look at family life during the 1930s. It captures a story about a secular Jewish family living at the time of WWII. The story is told from the perspective of twin daughters in the family and the unlikely paths that lead them apart and together again. The author provides a detailed description of family life at its best and at worst. The complexity of the characters provide an interesting forefront to the wars, gender politics, and racism occurring at this point in world history. I would definitely recommend this read!
    couldn't stop listening
I felt that I knew this family, these sisters when I finished the book. I just wanted it to go on.

Length: 5 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-08-13
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 43 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Jim Harrison is one of Americas most beloved and critically acclaimed authors, and this collection of novellas is Harrison at his most memorable - a brilliant rendering of two men striving to find their way in the world, written with freshness, abundant wit, and profound humanity.
In "The Land of Unlikeness", 60-year-old art history academic Clive - a failed artist, divorced and grappling with the vagaries of his declining years - reluctantly returns to his familys Michigan farmhouse to visit his aging mother. The return to familiar territory triggers a jolt of renewal - of ardor for his high school love, of his relationship with his estranged daughter, and of his own lost love of painting. In the title story, "The River Swimmer", Harrison ventures into the magical as an Upper Peninsula farm boy is irresistibly drawn to the water as an escape and sees otherworldly creatures there. Faced with the injustice and pressure of coming of age, he takes to the river and follows its siren song all the way across Lake Michigan.
The River Swimmer is a striking portrait of two richly drawn, profoundly human characters and an exceptional reminder of why Jim Harrison is one of the most cherished and important writers at work today.
    Critic Reviews:
"One of Americas great literary treasures, Harrison delivers not one but two works: The Land of Unlikeness', in which a washed-up 60-year-old academic returns to his Michigan home for renewal, and [The River Swimmer], in which an Upper Peninsula farm boy sees ghostly creatures in the waters of the nearby lake. Magic realism à la Harrison?" (Library Journal)
"The two novellas that constitute Harrisons fine new collection are, as usual, quite different in scope and contenteach striking in their own ways, rich and satisfying." (Publishers Weekly)
"Though these two novellas feel slight in comparison with the best of the prolific authors novels, the ways in which they complement and contrast with each other attest to his range. Everyday epiphanies from a major author." (Kirkus Reviews)

    Mixed experience
There are some beautiful passages and images of nature. Sort of a strange story that doesn't have a solid plot line. Narrator has an almost sarcastic tone and is not very good at women's voices, but has a certain dignity that gives the book strength. Parts of story are magical realism and parts are gritty human interaction, some quite violent. It both frustrated and amazed my and was ultimately worth listening to.
Get into the River and let the current do the rest
If you could sum up The River Swimmer in three words, what would they be?
    Liquid, Libations, Life,
What other book might you compare The River Swimmer to and why?
Siddhartha, ? The journey, but with the substance of body, surprises and desire, getting you down the river of life, not abstinence and suffering
What does Traber Burns bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    His absolute guy voice
If you could take any character from The River Swimmer out to dinner, who would it be and why?
    The Painter Suzanne

Theodore Honey is a shy, inconspicuous aircraft engineer whose eccentric interests in quantum mechanics and spiritualism are frowned upon in aviation circles. But when a passenger plane crashes in unexplained circumstances, Honey must convince his superiors that his unorthodox theories are correct before more lives are lost.
The title, No Highway, is taken from the poem "The Wanderer" by John Masefield, which Shute quotes at the start of the book:
"Therefore, go forth, companion: when you find
No Highway more, no track, all being blind,
The way to go shall glimmer in the mind."
    Critic Reviews:

No Highway is a novel which engages the heart and grips the mind." (Evening Standard)
    Members Reviews:
Fine writing keeps this story fresh
This novel became a movie with Jimmy Stewart and Marlene Dietrich - ignore that. The movie didn't work well. The movie was awful, and I never realized it was based on a Shute novel. Ben Elliot's great vocal characterizations bring the subjects to life. Shute writes on a subject he knows - aircraft engineering - but it's the character clashes, especially those in the decision making meeting rooms, that make this piece sparkle. Great surprise alliances when people are speaking bluntly - I love a good scene like that - it's as good as any courtroom scene written in the past generation. Shute probably doesn't get his due for anything other than "On The Beach."
In many respects, a pioneer work.
Be warned that this is an old book and the author has been dead for some while. I like it because of my interest in aeronautical matters and especially the problems of metal fatigue in early jet airliners. The film made in black and white has not stood the test of time but the plot of this story is really quite good as an obsessed and driven man tries to prove he is correct before more disasters occur. I am extraordinarily pleased that audible.com has secured rights to a number of old books. My paperback copy of the book fell apart years ago but as someone who was born to fly and loves the experience, Nevile Shute did a very good job given the time. There is some congruence with Michael Crighton's Airframe and the technological differences are considerable. Well worth a read.
    One of Nevil Shute's best
Where does No Highway rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    In the top 25%
Who was your favorite character and why?
Dr. Scott for his overall understanding
Which character as performed by Ben Elliot was your favorite?
    Dr.Scott
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    No
    Any additional comments?
Very enjoyable. Highly recommended for the older reader
    Excellent!
Another great story from Shute! I've noticed a pattern in his stories, someone with a small place in life keeps chugging along, and when they find a difficulty, people they didn't know were friends come and help, and the difficulty is solved, with a good ending. This is another one of those, well written, well narrated.
    Fiction Becomes Fact
What made the experience of listening to No Highway the most enjoyable?
The history AFTER the fictional story. No Highway was published in 1948 a full year before the first flight of the DeHaviland Comet.

An incredible journey and self realization...................
Where to start?...........this is really hard, as the book started from the middle then out. Which was the only way to do it! This is the third book that I've read of Elizabeth Flock and I have enjoyed all of them.
This story should be read by anyone who has had depression in their family. This will take you down the road from the patient's point of view, then brings you through the various trials and tribulations that he/she has gone through. So many ask how or why, this book will tell you not only the how, and why, but also the who. There are so many ways for a person to reach their breaking point, it's just a matter of time and circumstances.
I really don't want to give away the story, but Isabelle's breakdown happened on live television. This is a MUST READ BOOK.............But Inside I'm Screaming.
    But Inside....
Rated a 5 star read because it's freaking awesome! Unless one has experienced overwhelming sadness and defeat more than one time, one remains on the outside with empathy....mostly because sympathy is a big concession.
    good read!
Good read. A display of how treatment for mental disorders, medicinal & talk-therapy do work. And in insight into life in the the world beyond the medicinal facility.
    Interesting....
I picked this book for my psychology class.... we had to pick about that would relate to psychology and write a book report. I will admit this is not the kind of book that I would normally run and pick up. However I ended up liking the book very much.
This book relates to the reality of depression among other psychological problems. Where at first I was very fustrated with the main character, towards the end I found myself feeling sympathy for her.
    Not a bad book..
helpful insight into mental health facilities.
Entertaining and in formative. As mother of a bipolar child I was especially interested in what to expect if or when my loved one requires this level of care.

    Publisher's Summary:
In her first novel in 47 years, Dorothy West, the last surviving member of the Harlem Renaissance, offers an intimate glimpse into the African American upper middle class. Set on bucolic Martha's Vineyard in the 1950s, The Wedding tells the story of life in the Oval, a proud, insular community made up of the best and brightest of the East Coast's black bourgeoisie.
Within this inner circle of "blue-vein society", we witness the prominent Coles family as they gather for the wedding of their loveliest daughter, Shelby, who could have chosen from "a whole area of eligible men of the right colors and the right professions." Instead, she has fallen in love with and is about to be married to Meade Wyler, a white jazz musician from New York. A shock wave breaks over the Oval as its longtime members grapple with the changing face of its community.
With elegant, luminous prose, Dorothy West crowns her literary career by illustrating one family's struggle to break the shackles of race and class.

    Amazing!
This book flows from start to finished and is packed with descriptions that paint crystal clear images that place you on Martha's Vineyard as a silent observer. Dorothy West is an excellent writer!
Good Story about women's struggle to separate lust from real loveEnjoyed
I enjoyed the story was about women black and white. They had heart aches from learning about lust from love. I enjoyed Regina's delivery of the story, I could picture the setting in a lot of the situations. This was a good book club read. I would suggest it to another book club as well as to a friend.
    Interesting
Refreshing to read about wealthy Blacks in Martha's Vineyard! There were parts that I questioned if it really could have happened.

    Publisher's Summary:
Marjorie Morningstar is a love story. It presents one of the greatest characters in modern fiction: Marjorie, the pretty 17-year-old who left the respectability of New York's Central Park West to join the theater, live in the teeming streets of Greenwich Village, and seek love in the arms of a brilliant, enigmatic writer. In this memorable novel, Herman Wouk, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, has created a story as universal, as sensitive, and as unmistakably authentic as any ever told.
    Critic Reviews:
"Herman Wouk's Marjorie Morningstar is timeless.... Gabra Zackman has a sweet, warm voice, which she mixes with a seriousness that complements Wouk's prose and dialogue. Zackman's ability to change tone, from high-pitched to deep and feminine to breathless, brings the book and its personalities to life.... With Zackman at the mike, every chapter brings a new reason to continue." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
    Missing final chapter
The book and performance are fine, but Audible has left out the final chapter that resolves and completes Marjorie Morningstern's life. Without this final chapter, the book falls flat. Sorry, Audible, but buyers should be aware of this error.
    An excellent storyteller
I am sort of a sucker for anything by Herman Wouk. As an aficionado of his WWII books, I expected this one (when I first read it a million years ago) to be too girlish for me; and it is certainly more soap-opera-like than the war books; but I think it is better than that implies. Wouk is attempting to get inside the mind of a mid-20th-century American as a way of exploring some big ideas. He is particularly concerned with the place of traditional moral values in a modern setting. His conclusions are seen by many as being bourgeois or reactionary, but I think that is going too far. He certainly favors traditional morality as a way to get through life, but he doesn't do it in the snide, condemnatory way that so many right-wingers use today. Bestselling novels just don't engage the kind of ideas that are in this book anymore.
And as a child of the rural midwest, this book was one I used to live vicariously in New York in its golden years. It is so evocative of a different era! And the characters are pretty well-drawn. Noel is exactly right as the seemingly super-accomplished yet really inadequate "genius" type; and Marjorie herself is an unusual heroine. I usually half fall in love with the heroines in Dickens or Trollope of whoever. Marjorie remained interesting and attractive without ever being the embodiment of perfection we usually get with such females.
The narration could have been better -- someone with a bit more sophistication and sureness -- and who could pronounce things a bit better -- would have been good. But well worth a listen, overall.
    Thoroughly Enjoyed!
Would you consider the audio edition of Marjorie Morningstar to be better than the print version?
Definitely!. I recognized the characters immediately. I knew them. They were family members, classmates, coworkers, people I grew up with. Their backgrounds and the setting may be different, but the people were all the same. Even though I personally know little about York City and the Theatre life, the story could be played out in any setting. The characters and the story are timeless.
    Any additional comments?
Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. There were bits here and there that bogged it down a bit.
