    Publisher's Summary:
In the spring of 1943, during a stint in the merchant marines, 21-year-old Jack Kerouac set out to write his first novel. Working diligently day and night to complete it by hand, he titled itThe Sea Is My Brother. Nearly 70 years later, its long-awaited publication provides fascinating details and insight into the early life and development of an American literary icon.
Written seven years beforeThe Town and the Cityofficially launched his writing career,The Sea Is My Brothermarks the pivotal point at which Kerouac began laying the foundations for his pioneering method and signature style. The novel chronicles the misadventures of two seamen who at first seem different but are really two sides of the same coin: 27-year-old Wesley Martin, who loved the sea with a strange, lonely love, and William Everhart, an assistant professor of English at Columbia College who, at 32, impulsively ships out, hoping to escape society for the sea, but finds the sea a place of terrible loneliness.
A clear precursor to such landmark novels asOn the Road,The Dharma Bums, andVisions of Cody, it is an important formative work that bears all the hallmarks of classic Kerouac: the search for spiritual meaning in a materialistic world, spontaneous travel as the true road to freedom, late nights of intense conversation in bars and apartments, the desperate urge to escape from society, and the strange, terrible beauty of loneliness.
    Critic Reviews:
Published for the first time, the novel betrays the faults of inexperience. But these are outweighed by its virtues - the vitality of its dialogue, the freshness and power of its descriptions, whether of cheap saloons, cramped cabins, or sunrise at sea. A social concern rarely found in American fiction since Dos Passos. (Daily Mail, London)
The real value inThe Sea Is My Brotheris that it shows that Kerouac didnt spring fully formed as the King of the Beats, but had an evolution, a period of growing up and maturing, and that he - as any great writer must - certainly paid his dues. (Independent, London)
    Members Reviews:
    For Kerouac fans
This story, on its own, it nothing special. It is unfinished and lacks the signature style that Kerouac is known for. It is however a very interesting look at the early formation of Jack's writing and a glimpse of his first attempt to walk the thin line between fact and fiction. If you love Kerouac's work, you'll probably like this as well. If you have never read any of his other stories, you may be disappointed with this one. Narration is top notch. As usual, Ray Porter knocks it out of the park. He is tied, in my mind, with George Guidall for best audio book voice actor.
A fantastic romp of a tale! A great narrator too!
If you could sum up The Sea Is My Brother in three words, what would they be?
A great romp of a tale!
What did you like best about this story?
The plot and characters...developed so quickly and with gusto!
Which character as performed by Ray Porter was your favorite?
    Martin
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Laughed a bit...
    Any additional comments?
    thanks!
EARLY KEROUAC AND THE BEAT GENERATION
This is Kerouac at his youngest, if not his best. It was written in 1943 and published in 2012, long after his death. This book is relatively short. It left me looking for the next page.

Heart-stopping prose and crackling observations on a spiritual journey toward a life rich in love and freedom.
Stuck in a dead-end relationship, this fearless narrator leaves her metaphorical baggage behind and finds a comfort zone in the air, "feeling safest with one plane ticket in her hand and another in her underwear drawer." She flies around the world, finding reasons to love life in dozens of far-flung places from Alaska to Bhutan. Along the way she weathers unplanned losses of altitude, air pressure, and landing gear. With the help of a squad of loyal, funny, wise friends and massage therapists, she learns to sort truth from self-deception, self-involvement from self-possession.
At last, having found a new partner "who loves Don DeLillo and the NHL" and a daughter "who needs you to teach her to dive and to laugh at herself"not to mention two dogs and two horses"staying home becomes more of an option. Maybe."

    severe disappointment
I feel a bit robbed by this book by Pam Houston, whose previous work gave me considerable pleasure. "Contents May Have Shifted" forces the reader to listen to a series of unrelated, self-indulgent, plotless, writerly little scenarios that never develop movement or character. I was unbelievably bored and disappointed. Storytelling is a sacred pact between writer and author, an agreement that Houston betrayed in this book. Had I known to expect no actual story, I'd never have wasted my money on this one.

    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Nobel Prize winner Oe's most important novel, A Personal Matter, has been called by The New York Times "close to a perfect novel". In A Personal Matter, Oe has chosen a difficult, complex though universal subject: how does one face and react to the birth of an abnormal child? Bird, the protagonist, is a young man of 27 with antisocial tendencies who, more than once in his life, when confronted with a critical problem, has cast himself adrift on a sea of whisky like a besotted Robinson Crusoe. But he has never faced a crisis as personal or grave as the prospect of life imprisonment in the cage of his newborn infant-monster. Should he keep it? Dare he kill it?
Before he makes his final decision, Bird's entire past seems to rise up before him, revealing itself to be a nightmare of self-deceit. The relentless honesty with which Oe portrays his hero or antihero makes Bird one of the most unforgettable characters in recent fiction.
    Critic Reviews:
"Oe's themes of abnormality, sexuality, and marginality are outside the tradition of Japanese equipose.... His work has a gritty, grotesque quality, which makes him seem more akin to Mailer, Grass, or Roth than to many Japanese novelists." (
    The New Yorker)

    Overwhelming
    Brutally Powerful...
semi-autobiographical novel about the mental anguish of discovering one's child is mentally challenged. An amazing tour de force
    Should have been better
    (Slight spoiler below)
Everything the reviews on the product page say is true, so I won't repeat that the novel has more of an American "feel" than a Japanese one, etc. The key, to me, is in the quote from the New York Times calling this "a close to perfect novel". Why not perfect? Well, most of the book is indeed very good (though it was probably more shocking when first written than it is today). It is the story of a selfish, immature man who can't face the birth of his deformed son and just wants the baby to die. The character is well drawn, and his fear, anxiety and escapism are heart-wrenchingly realistic. But then comes the final chapter which to me felt tacked on. The ending is so optimistic, such a "happy ending" that I found it unbelievable, basically "and then he grew up and did the right thing and everything was Very Good." I felt cheated. That said, cut off this last chapter and I would have given the story five stars. As it is, I don't think I'd recommend it -- it's certainly not bad, but it should have been better.
The narrator, Eric Michael Summerer, does an excellent job.
big themes treated with a sure touch
Set in '60s Japan, I found this story of a young father coming to terms with the birth of a disabled child totally involving and believable. I have no way of judging if the translation did the original justice, but it certainly sounded quite natural to me, the jarring bits more due to different attitudes five decades ago, and the brutally honest inner monologue at times. I enjoyed the narrator's delivery, too.

    Language: English
    Release date: 12-20-11
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 70 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
A wry, fictional account of the life of Christ by Nobel laureate Jose Saramago.
A brilliant skeptic, Jose Saramago envisions the life of Jesus Christ and the story of his Passion as things of this earth: A child crying, the caress of a woman half asleep, the bleat of a goat, a prayer uttered in the grayish morning light. His idea of the Holy Family reflects the real complexities of any family, and, as only Saramago can, he imagines them with tinges of vision, dream, and omen.
The result is a deft psychological portrait that moves between poetry and irony, spirituality and irreverence of a savior who is at once the Son of God and a young man. In this provocative, tender novel, the subject of wide critical discussion and wonder, Saramago questions the meaning of God, the foundations of the Church, and human existence itself.
    Critic Reviews:
"Fiction that engages the mind as much as the spirit as, in eloquently supple prose, it seeks to understand faith." (Kirkus Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
A dry, wry retelling of the story of Jesus Christ
What did you love best about The Gospel According to Jesus Christ?
This book has been among my favourite José Saramago novel for several years now. Saramago is never better than when he's talking about the minutiae of existence: the little uncertainties, jealousies, delights and lies which animate human lives. Saramago sees Jesus' story through this lens, deconstructing how the angelic visitations, the Massacre of the Innocents, and Jesus' quest as a child trying to understand his place in the world would play out in the real world.
Have you listened to any of Robert Blumenfelds other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not, but his dry, quiet reading works brilliantly with the tone of the novel and with Saramago's matter-of-fact, meditative writing style. While adding pathos and merriment at all the right bits, the weight of his voice never lets me forget the weight of inevitability riding on Jesus' back as the novel finds its way to his death.
    Narration Robbed my Listening Experience
Is there anything you would change about this book?
No! The story and reasearch was excellently developed! I would change the NARRATOR! His overly sarcastic tone did not compare to the rich depth of historical reality in the written words! I enjoyed the reading more.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Loved the Historical details in Saramago's imagination.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Robert Blumenfeld?
Simon Vance would have done a great job!
Was The Gospel According to Jesus Christ worth the listening time?
Could bot get beyond the narrator...will keep trying...but I really did not like this narrator's interpretation.
    blasphemous story
hared it. not a biblical representation. Christ was a sinless man but certsinly not written that way.

    Make something, and die.
"There really wasn't much else to do. Make something, and die."
    - Ian McEwan, Amsterdam
It won the Booker, but wasn't my favorite Ian McEwan. Similar to 'The Children Act' in its use of classical music (one of the main characters is a classical composer), it is almost too clean, too moralizing, too easily tied up. But really, those are my only major complaints. I found it fascinating at parts and love love love it when Ian McEwan writes fiction about composing or music.
There are a few writers I've read recently who do a fantastic job of incorporating classical music into their stories. I'm thinking of William Gass and 'Middle C', Julian Barnes and 'The Noise of Time', Richard Powers and 'Orfeo', William T. Vollmann also gets a nod with parts of 'Europe Central'. Anyway, I love it. It reminds me of reading DFW when he is riffing on Tennis or Pynchon when he is riffing on physics. There are certain realities that a great prose stylist can almost lift off the page. For me, McEwan's writing about music in this book is what keeps it at four stars and doesn't drop it to three.

Hailed by the Washington Post Book World as a "modern classic", Robertson Davies' acclaimed Deptford Trilogy is a glittering, fantastical, cunningly contrived series of novels, around which a mysterious death is woven.
World of Wonders, the third book in the series after The Manticore, follows the story of Magnus Eisengrim - the most illustrious magician of his age - who is spirited away from his home by a member of a traveling sideshow, the Wanless World of Wonders. After honing his skills and becoming better known, Magnus unfurls his life's courageous and adventurous tale in this third and final volume of a spectacular, soaring work.

    Members Reviews:
    Disappointing Finish
I finally finished Robertson Davies' modern classic, the Deptford trilogy, and I'm sorry to report that the third entry, World of Wonders, provided a disappointing finish to what started so brilliantly with the first book, Fifth Business. I almost gave World of Wonders one star, and not two, but couldnt quite bring myself to do that because it was a creative story with interesting characters. However, I just found the last book's series of biographical monologues to be really tedious.
    Great North American Novel
I'm convinced, after this trilogy, that everyone after Twain trying to write a wistful, picaresque Bildungsroman and call it the Great American Novel, has actually written the Great Canadian Novel.
    Don't Miss Thos Book
Brilliant end of the Deptford trilogy engrossing fiction so well narrated.
Read all three for a magical adventure tinto the human soul.
    Compelling story; excellent reader
I listened to Fifth Business, The Manticore & World of Wonders straight through--just had to find out more about the characters.
    Excellent book, performance ok
This is an outstanding piece of writing by Robertson Davies. I read these as books 20 years ago and have enjoyed listening to these versions thoroughly. Although the performance is not great, it is much less intrusive than in the other audio versions of the previous parts of the Deptford trilogy. It's possible I've got used to it but I think the narration is more consistent and the characters don't bleed into each other. Certainly highly recommended.

    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
The late Nobel laureate's final novel, a radical retelling of the Old Testament.
In this, his last novel, Saramago daringly reimagines the characters and narratives of the Bible through the story of Cain. Condemned to wander forever after he kills Abel, he is whisked around in time and space. He experiences the almost-sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham, the Tower of Babel, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Joshua at the battle of Jericho, Jobe's ordeal, and finally Noah's ark and the Flood. And over and over again Cain encounters an unjust, even cruel God. A startling, beautifully written, and powerful book, in all ways a fitting end to Saramago's extraordinary career.
    Critic Reviews:
"Reading the Portuguese writer Jose Saramago, one quickly senses the presence of a master." (Christian Science Monitor)
"Saramago is the most tender of writers...with a clear-eyed and compassionate acknowledgment of things as they are, and a quality that can only be termed wisdom." (New York Times)
"Narrator Kevin Pariseau is the perfect choice to deliver this book. His dry reading style is in perfect harmony with the author's droll humor. Pariseau uses variations in tone and pitch to differentiate the characters, which helps the listener follow the extensive cast introduced throughout. While the pace of the prose is fast, the audio journey is carefully managed, so the narration is never rushed." (AudioFile)

    One Heck of Funny Book!!!!!
Oh my gosh.... this is such a FUNNY book... I have listened to it quite a few times and I always get a kick out of this re-imagining of Genesis.
Basically the lead character Cain goes around on his donkey creating havoc wherever he goes. He is NOT a nice person and he is endlessly quibbling with God and blaming all of his wrongdoings on God, who is also not a very "nice", um, God?
Saramago can write VERY subversive books (The Gospel According to Jesus Christ.... which sadly is available as an audiobook, but not though Audible as far as I know) got the nobel-prize winning author kicked out of his home country. Sometimes Christians just cannot take a joke.
So if you are one of those, don't get this book... you will hate it. But for you who aren't offended of someone making fun of the bible, go for it! It is so well narrated, too. Just the perfect amount of irony, scorn and smarmy-ness that tip the book from very funny to rolling on the ground laughing funny.
    One of my favorites!
    god awful narrator
What didnt you like about Kevin Pariseaus performance?
this is probably a wonderful story but the narrator's smirky, snide tone just ruins Saramago's subtle poetic observations. Wish I had listened to the preview before I bought it, it's like listening to nails on a chalk board, not sure I can get through the whole thing.
    Funny
The book reminds me a little of Good Omens by Terry Pratchett
& Neil Gaiman. Both use humor to point out the injustice in divine plans.
I would say my favorite bit is a joke about when Cain is looking at the line between two lands that are so different that they must be in two different times.

"Transparent Things revolves around the four visits of the hero - sullen, gawky Hugh Person - to Switzerland.... As a young publisher, Hugh is sent to interview R., falls in love with Armande on the way, wrests her, after multiple humiliations, from a grinning Scandinavian and returns to NY with his bride.... Eight years later - following a murder, a period of madness and a brief imprisonment - Hugh makes a lone sentimental journey to wheedle out his past.... The several strands of dream, memory, and time [are] set off against the literary theorizing of R. and, more centrally, against the world of observable objects."
    Martin Amis
One of the 20th centurys master prose stylists, Vladimir Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg in 1899. He studied French and Russian literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, then lived in Berlin and Paris, where he launched a brilliant literary career. In 1940 he moved to the United States, and achieved renown as a novelist, poet, critic, and translator. He taught literature at Wellesley, Stanford, Cornell, and Harvard. In 1961 he moved to Montreux, Switzerland, where he died in 1977.
    Critic Reviews:
Nabokov writes prose the only way it should be written, that is, ecstatically. (John Updike)

Moments of absolute and immortal genius
"When we concentrate on a material object, whatever its situation, the very act of attention may lead to our involuntary sinking into the history of that object. Novices must learn to skim over matter if they want matter to stay at the exact level of the moment. Transparent things, through which the past shines!" - VN, TT
Like almost every one of Nabokov's novels/novellas I've read so far, 'Transparent Things' has moments of absolute and immortal genius. I feel too there exists layers and ghosts in those pages that can only be exposed if I were to read TT three of four more times (I love Nabokov, but I'm not ready to prostrate myself that far). Anyway, Nabokov is savage in his sophisticated subtlety. Through Hugh's repeated trips to Switzerland, Nabokov guides the reader deeper and deeper (but never straight) into the distorted mind, madness and memory of Hugh Person. It is a novel that deals with the phantoms and as Nabokov himself called it, the "ooze of the past" and the "tangle of random destinies".
I loved TT, but still didn't always like it. Nabokov's own opus keeps me from giving this more than four stars. But trust me each of those four stars are transparent and brilliant.
    Excellent
If you've never read anything by Nabokov then this probably isn't the first book you should get, but it's a very nice, very short novel. You get the feeling that it could just as easily have been a short story. As always with Nabokov, the writing is exquisite. I also found the plot and the main character quite touching.
There is one point I hope might help some readers: For some reason, the general view among reviewers of this novel seems to be that the riddle in it (Nabokov has to have a riddle...) is very hard to figure out and that the book leaves the reader utterly bewildered.
