    Publisher's Summary:
The story of "Highway" Sanchez - bon vivant, world traveler, auctioneer - and his teeth is like Johnny Cash meets Robert Walser in Mexico.
"I was born in Pachuca, the Beautiful Windy City, with four premature teeth and my body completely covered in a very fine coat of fuzz. But I'm grateful for that inauspicious start because ugliness, as my other uncle, Euripides Lopez Sanchez, was given to saying, is character forming." Gustavo "Highway" Sanchez is a late-in-life world traveler, yarn spinner, collector, and legendary auctioneer. His most precious possessions are the teeth of the "notorious infamous", like Plato, Petrarch, and Virginia Woolf. Written in collaboration with the workers at a Jumex juice factory, The Story of My Teeth is an elegant, witty, exhilarating romp through the industrial suburbs of Mexico City and Luiselli's own literary influences.

    Be prpared.
Takes an exceptional quantity of suspension of disbelief and is much more complicated to follow than Luiselli's "Sidewalks" or "Faces in the Crowd." Still an intriguing read.

Just finished this book and I loved it! Out of her recent works
Just finished this book and I loved it! Out of her recent works , one of her best. I loved the plot and how she weaves the two families together. Once again, Ms. Steel, by writing about a family and the passage of time, makes me think about How profound our own actions are and how they will affect future generations. Well done and a great read!
    Pegasus
This is a book that begins like all of Danielle Steele's books, never has the male been wealthier or more handsome and the female has impeccable breeding with exquisite hair, face, and body, although the educational level of the characters are never mentioned. This is formula writing at its most successful and it seldom varies as the author introduces the family, the problem, Jewish background with Hitler looming, but the ability to escape and survive with an improbable solution, but a fairy tale ending. All of D.S.'s books fit her formula but they entertain and provide escape for a few hours. I am always disappointed in myself when I give in and read them, but, it was a few hours of sheer entertainment. If you've read one, you've read them all. Okie Reading Specialist
    Not her best
I've read every single one of Danielle Steel's books and I just feel that this wasn't one of her best books. It felt rushed--like she had to hurry up and finish it and get it into the stores by a certain time or something. Towards the end she was really rushing things and it hurt the plot line--in my opinion. I think she should have given this book more of her time and not rushed through it. As much as I look forward to getting the newest Danielle Steel book, I'd rather she take her time and do it right so that I have another great book to read from her.
    Of horses, men and women.
It's a good book and while placing its events in the midst of the most horrendous event of the twentieth century (WWII and the Jewish holocaust), there is little direct descriptions of the atrocities related to that period. The emphasis is on horses and their role in the lives of almost all of the characters of this novel; that part is quite astonishing. I appreciated the inter-relationships between horses and people and the sensitivity of the author to those relationships; horses were at the center of the narrative as much as men and women were.

After playing an intimate role in the mystery of the Resurrection, what is left for Maeve, the Celtic Mary Magdalen? Never a follower, will she emerge as a leader of the early church? Will she retire quietly to mother a sacred bloodline? Will she set sail for France to proselytize and go spelunking? The answer: all and none of the above. No sooner does Maeve open her mouth to preach the gospel her way than a fierce debate begins about what to do with the child she is carrying. Required listening for fans and accessible to those new to The Maeve Chronicles, Bright Dark Madonna takes the listener on a breathtaking journey from the temple porticoes of Jerusalem, to the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, to the south of France, and, as always, to the treacherous, beautiful terrain of the human heart.
    Critic Reviews:
"The best one yet!" (Catherine MacCoun, author of On Becoming an Alchemist)
"As usual, Cunningham provides plenty of juicy controversy embodied by vivid characters and expressed in vigorous action, all in crisply drawn biblical settings." (Booklist)
"Gleefully iconoclastic. For that dwindling demographic with a sense of humor about religion, Maeve's profane skewering of the all-too-human foibles of the Church fathers is a hoot." (Kirkus Reiews)

    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of the New York Times best seller Once a Runner - "the best novel ever written about running" (Runner's World) - comes that novel's prequel, the story of a world-class athlete coming of age in the 1950s and '60s on Florida's Gold Coast.
Quenton Cassidy's first foot races are with nature itself: the summer storms that sweep through his subtropical neighborhood. Shirtless, barefoot, and brown as a berry, Cassidy is a skinny, mouthy kid with aspirations to be a great athlete. As he explores his primal surroundings along the Loxahatchee River and the nearby Atlantic Ocean, he is befriended by Trapper Nelson, "the Tarzan of the Loxahatchee", a well-known eccentric who lives off the land.
In junior high school, quite by chance, Cassidy discovers an ability to run long distances, but his real dream is to be a basketball star. Still, Cassidy absorbs Nelson's view of running as a way of relating to and interacting with the natural world. Though he is warned of Nelson's checkered past, Cassidy dismisses the stories as superstitious gossip - until his small town is stunned by the disappearance of a prominent judge and his wife. Cassidy's loyalty to his friend is severely tested just as his opportunity to make his mark as a gifted runner comes to fruition.
John Parker's prequel to the New York Times best seller Once a Runner vividly captures how a runner is formed and the physical endurance, determination, and mind-set he develops on the way to becoming a champion. Racing the Rain is an epic coming-of-age classic about the environments and friendships that shape us all.

I just finished reading it again!
I just finished listening to all 3 books in this series by John L Parker for a second time. I listen while I run, and I love all three stories. Having grown up running in the pine scrub forests of central Florida BD (Before Disney), I can see Parker's vivid characters and scenes in my mind's eye. It's a riveting story about what it means to want something very badly, and then doing what it takes to try and win it. It's not all sunshine and roses. The hardships and the challenges are what make the story compelling. Patrick Lawlor does an excellent job narrating all three books. An awesome series. Now I want to start all over again!
    Great performance by Narrator
After having read several autobiographies, this novel was a fun change of pace.
I'm a sucker for any sports story, but what made this audiobook so entertaining was the performance of Jim Meskimen.
Anyone looking for a little something fun , with a bit of competitive edge would probably enjoy this audiobook.
    Great Narrator, Good Book
I enjoyed listening to this book but be aware that it is a coming of age story of a teenager growing up in 1960's Florida and running is only a part of that story and not THE story.
    Good 1960's athlete-coming-of-age story
This is a nostalgic coming-of-age story with a lot of sports in it. The book follows Quenton Cassidy through junior high and high school in Florida in the '60's. He is a runner and a basketball player. The story captures his athletic pursuits the best. The novel does a very good job of capturing the time and place, with believable characters. It could have been great with a little more character depth.

    Publisher's Summary:
These nine globe-trotting, unforgettable stories from Mia Alvar, a remarkable new literary talent, vividly give voice to the women and men of the Filipino diaspora. Here are exiles, emigrants, and wanderers uprooting their families from the Philippines to begin new lives in the Middle East, the United States, and elsewhere - and sometimes turning back again.
A pharmacist living in New York smuggles drugs to his ailing father in Manila, only to discover alarming truths about his family and his past. A Filipina teacher drawn to a special pupil finds, to her surprise, that she is questioning her own marriage. A college student leans on her brother, a laborer in Saudi Arabia, to support her writing ambitions, without realizing that his is the life truly made for fiction. And in the title story, a journalist and a nurse face an unspeakable trauma amid the political turmoil of the Philippines in the 1970s and '80s.
In the Country speaks to the heart of everyone who has ever searched for a place to call home. From teachers to housemaids, from mothers to sons, Alvar's powerful debut collection explores the universal experiences of loss, displacement, and the longing to connect across borders both real and imagined. Deeply compassionate and richly felt, In the Country marks the emergence of a formidable new writer.

My introduction to Filipino literature and culture
Although I have a couple of Filipino friends, I know very little about the country and culture. I usually prefer novels to short stories, but decided on this title based on the glowing reviews, and because I wanted to challenge myself. I'm so glad I did so. Mia Alvar has a gift for finely drawn characters and writes stories which refer to major political events but foreground the impact on ordinary people. I'm keen to search out other Filipino authors as a result of this book.
    Just The Beginning For Alvar
    Any additional comments?
Alvar is a writer to watch and remember. She is brilliant, and the stories are riveting and original. I will be teaching this book in my college literature class next spring.
    Short stories
    Any additional comments?
Given book of short stories was special, or good, or only so-so, but typically I retain little about the individual stories themselves for longer than a few months. I doubt that will be the case with IN THE COUNTRY. It is a powerful collection of nine stories .
    Well-done set of storytelling
Where does In the Country rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Definitely on the upper side.
What was one of the most memorable moments of In the Country?
The one about an aspiring writer (forgot the title). I liked how it explained that some people's true love are not always another person.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The two narrators ere good. However, as a Filipino-Canadian, I wished they would have hired somebody with Filipino descent as the main narrator. The narrator was good, but she didn't always get the accents right & mispronounced some of the Filipino words.
Who was the most memorable character of In the Country and why?
The writer. Second was the woman married to the the Activist in the last story.
    Any additional comments?
Great storytelling overall. I hope she has other works coming.
Accents all wrong, negative view of Filipinos
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
    It's okay.

Che Milan's life is falling apart. Not only has her longtime lover abruptly dumped her, but her eccentric, demanding mother has recently died. When an urn of ashes arrives along with a note reminding Che of a half-forgotten promise to take her mother to Canterbury, Che finds herself reluctantly undertaking a pilgrimage. Within days she joins a group of women who are walking the 60 miles from London to the shrine of Becket in Canterbury Cathedral.
In the best Chaucer tradition, the women swap stories as they walk, each vying to see who can best describe true love. Che, who is a perfectionist and workaholic, loses her cell phone at the first stop and is forced to slow down and really notice the world around her, perhaps for the first time in years.

First in the new Silver Valley series from the New York Times best-selling author of the Reapers Motorcycle Club Novels
Fourteen months. For 14 months, Puck Redhouse sat in a cell and kept his mouth shut, protecting the Silver Bastards MC from their enemies. Then he was free, and it was time for his reward - full membership in the club along with a party to celebrate. That was when he saw Becca Jones for the first time and set everything in motion. Before the night ended, he'd violated his parole and stolen her away from everything she knew.
Five years. It was five years ago that Puck destroyed Becca and saved her all in one night. She's been terrified of him ever since, but she's even more terrified of the monsters from which he still protects her. But Becca refuses to let fear control her. She's living her life and moving forward - until she gets a phone call from the past she can't ignore. She has to go back, and there's only one man she can trust to go with her - the ex-con biker who rescued her once before.
Puck will help her again, but this time it'll be on his terms. No more lies, no more tears, and no more holding back what he really wants....

GREAT SPIN-OFF FROM HER REAPERS MC SERIES
If you're looking for a hard-hitting raw MC listen then this is it.... but with "you're mine" romance too that turned out to be quite sweet underneath the whole bad-ass exterior. Great start to her new series of Biker Bastards.
Becca wasn't in a good place when Puck found her and rescued her but it took 5 years before they finally talked properly to each other again and then their sexual chemistry took over but Becca was an independent woman who didn't want to be an old lady because it brought back too many dark memories of her past life. And that past life was coming back to haunt her life now with blackmail, betrayal and ultimatums and Becca could only rely on herself to get out of this mess..... which proved to be a very bad idea.
Rival biker gangs, clubhouse business, old ladies, death threats, a murder or two, twists, raw no holes barred frenzied sex scenes, biker talk, heated passionate scenes and a romance - biker style. Told from dual POV's, good narration and HEA Epilogue.
Worth a credit? I loved it, was caught up in every delicious scene and yes, IMO creditworthy (as long as you know what you're getting - slutty alpha males, angst, abuse, strong heroine, action, suspense, steamy sex and a very unconventional romance).
    Good but not the best
There is something about JW's book that is an auto download for me. I mean I will even put up with crappy narration because her books are just that great.
This is the story of Puck and his property Bex. If you have been following the Reapers Series that you have some idea of who he is. In my opinion this book was just good enough... not awful though I have one particular scene that was truly a turn off in this book but that minor disruption did not take away from the book overall.
The story begins with the celebration of Puck & Painter's release from prison. It is during this event that Puck meets and falls for Becca.

    Publisher's Summary:
For almost a decade, Rachel Caine has turned her back on home, kept distant by family disputes and her work monitoring wolves on an Idaho reservation. But now, summoned by the eccentric Earl of Annerdale and his controversial scheme to reintroduce the grey wolf to the English countryside, she is back in the peat and wet light of the Lake District.
The earl's project harks back to an ancient idyll of untamed British wilderness - though Rachel must contend with modern-day concessions to health and safety, public outrage, and political gain - and the return of the grey after hundreds of years coincides with her own regeneration: impending motherhood, and reconciliation with her estranged family.
The Wolf Border investigates the fundamental nature of wilderness and wildness, both animal and human. It seeks to understand the most obsessive aspects of humanity: sex, love, and conflict; the desire to find answers to the question of our existence; those complex systems that govern the most superior creature on Earth.
    Critic Reviews:
"What an achievement so vivid, so visceral, so vital. I can see the wolves and the characters in the landscape like a movie in my head. Every time I picked it up, I struggled to put it down again. Its a beautiful construction." (Val McDermid)

    Slow and Steady
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I bought this audiobook because I loved Louise Brealey's narration in The Girl on the Train and How to Build a Girl. I loved Louise's performance in this, too-- I think she handled all of the characters' various accents very well, and she has a lovely voice to listen to for thirteen hours of commuting.
Sarah Hall is a talented stylist, but I found this book to be very slow. I stopped around 5 hours in, and came back to it several months later, to be honest. There is an excessive amount of description. When action happens, it is well-executed and suspenseful. But Hall chooses to exercise that side of her talent pretty rarely. Often it feels like a 19th century novel, just following the cast around in their lives for stretches at a time.
Have you listened to any of Louise Brealeys other performances before? How does this one compare?
I love Louise. I'll buy anything she narrates.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Probably, yes.
    Marvelous.
Loved it. Such crisp, precise writing and nuanced characters. The description and understanding of the landscape put me in mind of Robert MacFarlane.
I look forward to reading more of Sarah Hall's books.
The narration was a perfect fit for the tone of the narrative and consideration of it's characters.
    Delightful Realism
    Any additional comments?
The author's exposition of her hero's emotional reality is delicious. Every description is poignant and precise. The painting is exact and satisfying. Rachel's relationship with the wolves, her son, her mother and her brother are beautifully told. This is the best book I've listened to this year.
I will listen to anything Louise Brealey reads!
Well written book, although it ended quickly. I bought it because I loved listening to the Girl On The Train - and Louise Brealey is just as great reading this one.
Beautifully written with rich detail, and beautifully read
Such a unique and interesting story, a gem of a discovery. Enjoyed it all, from beginning to end.

I read a lot of Blake Crouch, this is a great listen
    Any additional comments?
This is a shorter audio book. I only purchased it because I trust Blake Crouch for consistent thrills when I'm in the mood for this kind of genre. I went into the story straight away. I will just say that I am not into 'celebrity' or that kind of thing and it really didn't matter, this story was so interesting I just kept listening. I love his play on the behavior of real celebrities behind the facade and that is how our main character slips into his new identity - brilliant. I also love the ending. I got sucked in straight away, its like one of those trashy movies you can't stop watching.
BC is my favourite literary junk food and I am not ashamed, not one bit!
A different kind of creepy fun
I didn't know what to expect. The basic premise seems obvious from the beginning and yet still feels creepy as it plays out. The story is well worth a read/listen.
    Awesome
