    Publisher's Summary:
Cadence didn't sit down one night and decide that downing two bottles of wine was a brilliant idea.
Her drinking snuck up on her - as a way to sleep, to help her relax after a long day, to relieve some of the stress of the painful divorce that's left her struggling to make ends meet with her five-year-old son Charlie.
It wasn't always like this. Just a few years ago, Cadence seemed to have it all - a successful husband, an adorable son, and a promising career as a freelance journalist. But with the demise of her marriage, her carefully constructed life begins to spiral out of control. Suddenly she is all alone trying to juggle the demands of work and motherhood.
Logically, Cadence knows that she is drinking too much, and every day begins with renewed promises to herself that she will stop. But within a few hours, driven by something she doesn't understand, she is reaching for the bottle - even when it means not playing with her son because she is too tired, or dropping him off at preschool late, again. And even when one calamitous night it means leaving him alone to pick up more wine at the grocery store. It's only when her ex-husband shows up at her door to take Charlie away that Cadence realizes her best kept secret has been discovered.
Heartbreaking, haunting, and ultimately life-affirming, Best Kept Secret is more than just the story of Cadence - it's a story of how the secrets we hold closest are the ones that can most tear us apart.

    amazing book!
I loved it! Every minute is on point with the emotions a person experiences with this type of problem. worth your while.
Talking Out Loud to the Characters....
There are not many books that have affected me to the point of actually talking out loud to them - encouraging them, warning them, cheering them..... but this one did and all of the above.... You already get that it's about her loss of control regarding her alcohol intake - what you don't get is how she gets to that point and how easily it can be any one of us or anyone of the people we know/love. I've already recommended this book to some of my friends that are sponsors in AA - I feel it really can send a positive message for some folks that may not be able to catch on to the AA philosophy right away. This is NOT a preachy book, this is not a hidden agenda book... it's a well researched book about a tough subject. I highly recommend and will most likely read it again.
    Genuine portrayal of addicted mothers
I read this book when I was 6 months sober and liked it but didn't love it. Now I'm 4 years sober and I can appreciate this book much better! I highly recommend! This is a good accurate portrayal of what addicted mothers go through in their addiction and in sobriety.
Sorry to Say it Was BORING
I was not able to finish this book. I quit at chapter 7. I couldn't stand one more conversation between the main character and her son, or the main character and anyone else. There was noting of interest going on, just conversations.
Love it.... More truth like this should be written
This story is well written, attention grabbing, and shows hard truths.
Do listen to this one for a good read!

    Publisher's Summary:
Douglas Petersen may be mild-mannered, but behind his reserve lies a sense of humor that seduces beautiful Connie into a second date...and eventually into marriage. Now, almost three decades later, they live more or less happily in the London suburbs with their moody seventeen year-old son, Albie. Then Connie tells him she thinks she wants a divorce.
The timing couldnt be worse. Connie has planned a month-long tour of European capitals, a chance to experience the worlds greatest works of art as a family, and she cant bring herself to cancel. And maybe going ahead is for the best anyway? Douglas is privately convinced that this landmark trip will rekindle the romance in the marriage, and might even help him to bond with Albie.
Narrated from Douglass endearingly honest, slyly witty, and at times achingly optimistic point of view, Us is the story of a man trying to rescue his relationship with the woman he loves, and learning how to get closer to a son whos always felt like a stranger.

"Haig's portrayal of a straitlaced middle-aged scientist who is trying to fit in with his artistic, laid-back family is flawless, and listeners will be impressed with his ability to seamlessly transition among the characters, capturing each one's personality. This bittersweet comedy of errors and self-discovery is destined to be one of the most talked about audiobooks of the year." (AudioFile)

Great novel - my favorite in years
This novel was a great one. The story is simple - a married English couple in their 50's is dealing with a marriage in distress. The story is from the man's point of view. Their 17 year-old son, ready to head off to college, is the other main character. The husband is a scientist; the wife an artist. The conservative man has a rocky relationship with his son. It sounds almost stereotypical. It is anything but that. The novel alternates between the present and the past in their relationships. The characters are all so believable and interesting. It is an incredibly engaging and emotional story. In addition, the narrator is great, with perfect voices for all three main characters. If you like real life relationship novels, they don't come better than this. I hated to have this end. It has been years since I have enjoyed such a great novel, and I read and listen to a lot. I wish I could give this 6 stars.
This Guy Tries So Hard, I Felt Sad For Him...
David Nicholls novel, "Us", was an inside look at a marriage written from the male perspective. Douglas, the husband and protagonist, is a man working hard to save his long-term marriage. The author was able to bring me so close to the husband that I longed to talk with him and tell him to stop trying so hard and stop letting Connie make all the decisions. I felt sad for him as he tried too hard to please his beloved wife and sad for the wife that she could not see her husband for the gem that he was. This was a book of angst and frustration; often moving too slowly for my taste. My favorite part of the book was watching Douglas work towards rekindling his relationship with his son and watching him make some hard-won changes in himself towards the end of the novel. As a marital portrayal, the novel is a fairly accurate picture of what could and/or does go on in some marriages. The listening experience was improved through the clarity of voice provided by David Haig.

But her professional success belies private sorrow and domestic strife. There is the lingering regret of her childlessness, and now her marriage of 30 years is in crisis. At the same time, she is called on to try an urgent case: for religious reasons, a beautiful 17-year-old boy, Adam, is refusing the medical treatment that could save his life, and his devout parents share his wishes. Time is running out. Should the secular court overrule sincerely held faith? In the course of reaching a decision Fiona visits Adam in hospital - an encounter which stirs long-buried feelings in her and powerful new emotions in the boy. Her judgment has momentous consequences for them both.

Packs a memorable and rewarding punch
McEwen confronts the reader with a thought provoking issue presented with compassion and skill.
When should the state intervene in a family decision which has been based on strongly held religious beliefs: in this case, Jehovahs Witnesses.
Adam, almost a legal adult, passionately, idealistically, agrees with his parents that, although dying from leukaemia, he must not accept a blood transfusion. Fiona, a judge, herself caught up in a personal crisis relating to the meaning of her marriage, fidelity and betrayal, must make a ruling on this matter.
This is a dynamic listen, beautifully read by Lindsay Duncan. It is concise, raw, disciplined. The language rich and melodious. The characters live, each travelling paths that the listener identifies with, participates in. What would I do? How do I feel about what happened?
A fascinating read, a bit disappointing in the end
Great reader. Wonderful incipit. Just a bit disappointing in its ending, but surely worth listening to.
Another Superb Audiobook from Ian McEwan
Always a brilliant commentator through his fiction of contemporary society Ian McEwan has produced a poignant insight into the judicial process when it comes to dealing with families and children in difficulty. The parallel story of the dilemmas facing the judge add another dimension to this tale. There really couldn't be a better narrator than Lindsay Duncan who with all her acting experience fills the story with passion and brings the individuals alive. Certainly one of my favourite audiobooks.
    compelling
I really enjoyed listening to this book and thought that Lindsay Duncan was an excellent choice for narration. The story is compelling.
    Welcome Back!
I have struggled with the last few McEwan titles although I have been a long-time fan (ever since I first read Amsterdam). This is a welcome return to Amsterdam form. I do not know if my familiarity with the legal themes helped with this perception, but it certainly did not hurt. In fact, there were times when I thought a person who was not intimately familiar with the English common law system and the precedent system particular to the United Kingdom (which is different in nuance from the US, for example), might have missed some of the subtleties of the narrative. It made me wonder if I have missed like subtleties in recent books (say about the publishing houses referred to in Sweet Tooth) and thereby misjudged them. In the end, I ignored the nagging doubt and settled back to enjoy the book.

The world Cal and Frida have always known is gone, and they've left the crumbling city of Los Angeles far behind them. They now live in a shack in the wilderness, working side-by-side to make their days tolerable despite the isolation and hardships they face. Consumed by fear of the future and mourning for a past they can't reclaim, they seek comfort and solace in each other. But the tentative existence they've built for themselves is thrown into doubt when Frida finds out she's pregnant.
Terrified of the unknown but unsure of their ability to raise a child alone, Cal and Frida set out for the nearest settlement, a guarded and paranoid community with dark secrets. These people can offer them security, but Cal and Frida soon realize this community poses its own dangers. In this unfamiliar world, where everything and everyone can be perceived as a threat, the couple must quickly decide whom to trust.
A gripping and provocative debut novel by a stunning new talent, California imagines a frighteningly realistic near future, in which clashes between mankind's dark nature and irrepressible resilience force us to question how far we will go to protect the ones we love.

    Not Worth the Colbert Bump
I think like most people, I was directed to this work because of Stephen Colbert. But also because this is a genre that I read a lot of.
First of all, the narrator sounds like Lisa Simpson. She did a tolerable job, but I don't think she should make a career of narration.
Second of all, this doesn't really deserve to be categorized as dystopian. Although that is ostensibly the story background, it's really a juvenile romance. Although the characters are supposed to be in their 30s, they act like they are still in high school...except maybe for the psychopathic serial killer.
    Not recommended.
Not Deserving of The Colbert Bump
I'm not sure California by Edan Lepucki deserved the Colbert bump. The book was featured a month before its release on The Colbert Report, when Stephen Colbert was reporting on the Hachette v Amazon dispute. The concept sounded fascinating. A husband and wife in California after the world has been desecrated. You never do learn what happened but it sounds like a combination of war, global warming, and society just breaking down.
So what's wrong with California the novel? Pretty much everything. The book doesn't really have the necessary elements of a good story. Like a beginning middle or end. The book is just there. You meet the focus of the book Cal (short for Calvin and also his nickname California) and Frida who are living in the wilderness after escaping Los Angeles. Without going into too much of the plot (or the minor resemblance's of a plot) its about their survival and the survival of those around them.
I was listening to the audiobook and kept looking at the time left in the book and was wondering when something was going to happen. Yet nothing ever really happens. Frida complains and Cal consoles, and their characters switch roles a few times, but in all honesty nothing happens in this book. Both characters come off flat, and just have little to no redeeming quality.
I guess that's my biggest issue with California.

    Publisher's Summary:
Perhaps the most surprising and intriguing novel on the Man Booker Prize longlist, The Marrying of Chani Kaufman is a debut originally published by a small independent Scottish press that is already garnering significant attention worldwide.
London, 2008. Chani Kaufman is a 19-year-old woman, betrothed to Baruch Levy, a young man whom she has seen only four times before their wedding day. The novel begins with Chani standing like a "pillar of salt", wearing a wedding dress that has been passed between members of her family and has the yellowed underarms and rows of alteration stitches to prove it. All of the cups of cold coffee and small talk with men referred to Chanis parents have led up to this moment. But the happiness Chani and Baruch feel is more than counterbalanced by their anxiety: about the realities of married life; about whether they will be able to have fewer children than Chanis mother, who has eight daughters; and, most frighteningly, about the unknown, unspeakable secrets of the wedding night.
As the book moves back to tell the story of Chani and Baruchs unusual courtship, it throws into focus a very different couple: Rabbi Chaim Zilberman and his wife, Rebbetzin Rivka Zilberman. As Chani and Baruch prepare for a shared lifetime, Chaim and Rivka struggle to keep their marriage alive. And all four, together with the rest of the community, face difficult decisions about the place of faith and family life in the contemporary world.

Thanks to the author, narrator and audible for this good book and performance.
    Thought Provoking
I think this book deserves a Part Two. It would be so interesting to know what happens to these characters in their futures.
    I enjoyed it immensely
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters. I liked hearing the Hebrew and how they dealt with the strict laws. What I don't like is I couldn't find anything else by the author. I want more.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the critically acclaimed author of Sons and Other Flammable Objects comes a bold fabulist novel about a feral boy coming of age in New York, based on a legend from the medieval Persian epic The Shahnameh, the Book of Kings.
In a rural Iranian village, Zals demented mother, horrified by the pallor of his skin and hair, becomes convinced she has given birth to a White Demon. She hides him in a birdcage and there he lives for the next decade. Unfamiliar with human society, Zal eats birdseed and insects, squats atop the newspaper he sleeps upon, and communicates only in the squawks and shrieks of the other pet birds around him.
Freed from his cage and adopted by a behavioral analyst, Zal awakens in New York to the possibility of a future. An emotionally stunted and physically unfit adolescent, he strives to become human as he stumbles toward adulthood, but his persistent dreams in bird and his secret penchant for candied insects make real conformity impossible. As New York survives one potential disaster, Y2K, and begins hurtling toward another, 9/11, Zal finds himself in a cast of fellow outsiders. A friendship with a famous illusionist who claims - to the Bird Boy's delight - that he can fly and a romantic relationship with a disturbed artist who believes she is clairvoyant send Zals life spiraling into chaos. Like the rest of New York, he is on a collision course with devastation.
In tones haunting yet humorous and unflinching yet reverential, The Last Illusion explores the powers of storytelling while investigating contemporary and classical magical thinking. Its potent lyricism, stylistic inventiveness, and examination of otherness can appeal to readers of Salman Rushdie and Helen Oyeyemi. A celebrated essayist and chronicler of the 9/11-era, Khakpour reimagines New Yorks most harrowing catastrophe with a dazzling homage to her beloved city.
    Members Reviews:
    Powerful, gorgeous & discomfiting
Loved this novel. I've read at least 1 literary novel per week for more than 20 years and this is one of the standouts. It has all the beautiful lucidity of the best contemporary American literary fiction, as well as the willingness to take the reader into dark unsettling places that the most seductive and memorable world literature (by Kafka, Bernhard etc.) has.
The Last Illusion is a contemporary re-imagining of the Persian medieval epic The Shahnameh. The main character Zal is born fair-skinned and blond in Iran. His deranged mother calls him White Demon and confines him to a bird cage along with her other pet birds, feeding him insects and letting him sleep on straw. He communicates with the birds by squawking. He is taken out of his life as a bird by an older sibling. A white American psychologist who studies feral children and whose great love is a dead Persian poet adopts him and takes him to New York City.
Zal comes of age in pre-9/11 New York City, still longing for his life as a bird. He sneaks candied insects and still longs to fly. When he meets illusionist Bran Silber, he think he's found a kindred spirit who is equally interested in flying. He also develops a relationship with an anorexic eccentric photographer and falls in love with her gigantic sister Willa. Meanwhile, the illusionist is planning to make the World Trade Center disappear.
    Great read!
Started a bit bizarre, but then developed into a great story.

Mitchell S. Jackson grew up black in a neglected neighborhood in Americas whitest city, Portland, Oregon. In the 90s, those streets and beyond had fallen under the shadow of crack cocaine and its familiar mayhem. Welcome to Little Wing.
Its a place like hundreds of others, nothing special, really. But for four friendsall born and raised in this small Wisconsin townit is home. And now they are men, coming into their own, or struggling to do so.
One of them never left, still working the family farm that has been tilled for generations. But others felt the need to move on, with varying degrees of success. One trades commodities, another took to the rodeo circuit, and one of them even hit it big as a rock star. And then theres Beth, a woman who has meant something special in each of their lives.
Now all four are brought together for a wedding. Little Wing seems even smaller than before. While lifelong bonds are still strong, there are stressesbetween the friends, between husbands and wives. There will be heartbreak, but there will also be hope, healing, even heroism as these memorable people learn the true meaning of adult friendship and love.
Seldom has the American heartland been so richly and accurately portrayed. Though the town may have changed, the one thing that hasnt is the beauty of the Wisconsin farmland, the lure of which, in Nickolas Butlers hands, emerges as a vibrant character in the story. Shotgun Lovesongs is that rare work of fiction that evokes a specific time and place yet movingly describes the universal human condition. It is, in short, a truly remarkable audiobooka novel that once listened to will never be forgotten.
    Editorial Reviews:
Editors Select, March 2014 - Im always drawn to stories told from multiple perspectives (see
The Help, Water for Elephants, The Invention of Wings, The History of Love, etc.) and
Shotgun Lovesongs kept its appeal throughout, thanks to an intimate look at life, love, friendship, and growing up in small-town America performed by a strong cast of rotating narrators. Not a lot happens in Little Wing, Wisconsin, but its home for Leland, Henry, Beth, Kip, and Ronny lifelong friends who each struggle with their decisions to stay in the beauty of the farmland or move on to bigger and better things. Through heartbreak, hope, regret, and the moments you can only share with the friends whove known you forever, Nickolas Butlers debut truly shines. (And for the music fans out there, Lelands character who goes on to become a famous musician is said to be loosely based on Justin Vernon, who grew up in the area and is best known as the front man for the indie folk band Bon Iver.)

There was substantial buzz about this book in our local press because author Nickolas Butler, is a hometown (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) lad. For me, there was little to no risk in using a credit on "Shotgun Lovesongs" because I knew, if nothing else, it would be fun to read about the setting while comparing the novel's plot to facts about the life and times of Justin Vernon & Co. I wish I was impressed.
