Title: Red Rose, White Rose

Author: Joanna Hickson

Narrator: Chloe Massey

Format: Unabridged

Length: 13 hrs and 41 mins

Language: English

Release date: 12-04-14

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes

Genres: History, European

Publisher's Summary:

The powerful story of Cecily Neville, torn between both sides in the War of the Roses, from the critically acclaimed author of The Agincourt Bride.

In fifteenth century England the Neville family rules the north with an iron fist. Ralph Neville, Earl of Westmorland, a giant of a man and a staunch Lancastrian, cunningly consolidates power by negotiating brilliant marriages for his children. The last betrothal he arranges before he dies is between his youngest daughter, nine-year-old Cicely, and his ward Richard, the thirteen-year-old Duke of York, England's richest heir.

Told through the eyes of Cicely and her half-brother Cuthbert, Red Rose, White Rose is the story of one of the most powerful women in England during one of its most turbulent periods. Born of Lancaster and married to York, the willowy and wayward Cicely treads a hazardous path through love, loss and imprisonment and between the violent factions of Lancaster and York, as the Wars of the Roses tear England's ruling families apart.

"Captivating." (Woman's Own)

A fascinating woman often left on the fringes

What does Chloe Massey bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

AN interesting accent, which seemed wrong at first for a Duchess, but I became used to it and it didn't cause problems. Some narrators read the story, some perform it. This narrator read the story - really well, and that's usually fine. However the story is presented from two perspectives - one female and one male. It was confusing at times working out who's story was being told, because it was delivered in the same voice. Other than that, brilliant narration.

Any additional comments?

Great to have a book about a woman often left on the fringes but who always appears to be a strong matriarch. Great writing which brought the 15th century to life.

Enjoyable

Enjoyed the story but felt it ran out of steam at the end! Good read.

Brilliant story

I loved this book. It tells the story of Cicily Neville and her illegitimate brother Cuthbert who have to fight for supremacy and survival during the Cousins Wars (the proper name for the Wars of the Roses).

Fabulous story, read by an aptly accented narrator. I will definitely buy more of Joanna Hickson's stories on here.

Interesting and covers facts you didn't know

What made the experience of listening to Red Rose, White Rose the most enjoyable?

Chloe Massey's voice is soft and gentle and she really reads well. I had no problem in distinguishing which parts were Cecily speaking and which parts Cuthbert.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Red Rose, White Rose?

The strange love affair between John Neville and Cecily which is an underlying story throughout the book although I have no idea whether this is true.

Publisher's Summary:

Margaretha Geertruida Zelle (1876 1917), better known by the stage name Mata Hari, was a Dutch exotic dancer who was convicted of being a spy and executed by firing squad in France during the first World War.

Sir Basil Home Thomson, KCB (1861 1939) was a British intelligence officer, police officer, prison governor, colonial administrator, and writer. Thomson interviewed Mata Hari in London in 1915 as part of a British investigation into her espionage activities.

This is his first hand account of that meeting. He also recounts the interrogation of other female foreign spies during his period in office.

Members Reviews:

not much info here

basically the reading of a Wikipedia page. certainly not a book on tape. author discusses Mata hari briefly and one other spy...

few facts

Slim content delivered with an annoying accent, all in all, a waste of time. Even 20 minutes was too long for this.

Title: Metfield Parish and Poor in the Late Eighteenth Century

Author: Victor Peskett

Narrator: Kate Shrewsday

Format: Unabridged

Length: 44 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-05-14

Publisher: William Peskett

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes

Genres: History, European

Publisher's Summary:

What was life like for the rural poor in 18th century England? Just as new agricultural technology was replacing farm workers with machines, medical advances were improving life expectancy. The result in the rural East Anglian county of Suffolk was a scarcity of employment that left many without the means to support themselves or their families. In this fascinating glimpse into community action at a local level, Victor Peskett reveals in this book the workings of the Guardians of the Poor in Metfield, Suffolk, a village committee with powers to levy a charge on the community and, after close examination, disperse funds to support the poor, according to their needs and their means. Peskett's painstaking research into the minutes of the Guardians' meetings has uncovered not the dry transactions of a local administrative committee, but an illumination of the past two short centuries ago. From the old vellum-bound, hand-written record emerge characters we come to know - their clothes, their few possessions, their daily transactions and their squabbles but, most of all, their urgent and basic needs at a time when progress seemed to be leaving them behind.

Members Reviews:

Fascinating short read

I must say that this was a pretty interesting short read. Although it went into various areas of how the poor were treated in this village, I found the secontion on the workhouses to be most fascinating. The author did an excellent job at being concise in his descriptions and really kept the book short.

Title: Henry VIII

Subtitle: About the Throne the Thunder Rolls, Just the Facts

Author: Alison Hardwick

Narrator: Simon Brooks

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 19 mins

Language: English

Release date: 10-08-14

Publisher: Burton Crown Limited

Genres: History, European

Publisher's Summary:

Henry VIII was not born to be king. His birth was treated as an insignificant event and his early years were not filled with the kingly tutorship that his elder brother, Arthur, experienced. Popular myth states that as the second son he was destined to be the Archbishop of Canterbury! At his birth his father was not fully secure on the throne of England. This was a throne that had a habit of changing hands on an alarmingly regular basis, normally with foul means involved. If his father had been toppled and his brother had lived, Henry would have ended up as a nobody - a footnote to history. But that was not the case.

Henry VIII remains the titanic figure in English history. His story is the one that every child remembers from their school days.

The famous Holbein portraits dont show an insignificant second son; they show a colossus of a man who appeared to be born to lead a nation. Everyone remembers his wives and mistresses, as well as the bloody and ruthless executions. Yet people forget the gentler side to Henrys nature, his love of poetry, music, and theatre. He had a generous nature, as well as a strong interest in science and apothecary services. And of course he had a love of physical activity.

Members Reviews:

Does what is says on the tin!

It states at the start that is presents the facts so expect a brief account of Henry's life. The reading is easy to listen and add to the quite informative but undemanding experience.
