    Gripping
This book is gripping. It takes a little while to get to know all the different people within the tangled web of lives but once you do it is gripping and shocking. To the point were if this was a novel you would think the author had gone too far. The things that happened to Lady Strathmore are horrendous. I loved listening to this book. It has given me a renewed interest in this period of history. Well worse a listen.
    Highly recommended
Fascinating and tragic tale. Engagingly written and a very good reading. I'll be looking out for further work by both Wendy Moore and Rachel Atkins.
    Highly recommended!
    Any additional comments?
I listened to this book virtually beginning to end almost from the time I downloaded it. I found the story utterly compelling, superbly written and well narrated. I would certainly be interested in reading/listening to more works from Wendy Moore, or indeed hearing further narration from Rachel Atkins. On the whole a very well deserved 5-stars!!
    Wow! Brilliant
Stranger than fiction - an incredible story, very well written with many interesting historical facts loosely relating to the main plot, which enhanced the story. Flawless narration kept me riveted (with the exception of her pronunciation of "Scotland"!)

    From the horses mouth
If you could sum up The Dream Shall Never Die in three words, what would they be?
    Insightful reassuring hope
What did you like best about this story?
The only other autopsy that has proven more interesting than Frankie Boyle's BBC 33 program. Less harsh realities than from Frankie, but a keen insight into the polished politics of project fear and a reassuring nod to the future in which Scotland will eventually break itself away from the war monger img confused mess that is Westminster.
    Good book, pick it up
Have you listened to any of Alex Salmonds other performances before? How does this one compare?
He has a very good voice
    Not to missed
Really enjoyed listening to Alex must listen to it yourselves as it a must you will not regret it.
    A tremendous recording of history.
Great text! This is an assest in the recording of Scottish history. For those of us who were there and for the generations to come.
    The hour of awakening neareth.
Wonderful. Beautifully writen and read. sets you up nicely for the final push to independence. Bring on indy new!
Great insight into the Scot. Independence vote
Great to hear from the main man directly if only some of this had been in the public domain at the time the outcome may well have been different. Alex has a relaxed manor when narrating the book and if you have ever met him it is like speaking to the man himself. I simply couldn't put it down,I might have a few questions for him the next time we meet. Very highly recommened.

  • After the Flood: What the Dambusters Did Next Audiobook by John Nichol

Title: After the Flood: What the Dambusters Did Next
    Author: John Nichol

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-02-15
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
Former RAF Tornado Navigator and Gulf War veteran John Nichol sets out on a personal journey to discover what happened to 617 Squadron after the flood.
The role RAF 617 Squadron in the destruction of the dams at the heart of the industrial Ruhr has been celebrated in book, magazine and film for more than seventy years.
On 17 May 1943, 133 airmen set out in 19 Lancasters to destroy the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams. Fifty-six of them did not return. Despite these catastrophic losses, the raid became an enormous propaganda triumph. The survivors were feted as heroes and became celebrities of their time.
They had been brought together for one specific task - so what happened next? Of the 77 men who made it home from that raid, 32 would lose their lives later in the war, and only 45 survived to see the victory for which they fought.
Few are aware of the extent of the Dambuster squadrons operations after the Dams Raid. They became the go to squadron for specialist precision attacks, dropping the largest bombs ever built on battleships, railway bridges, secret weapon establishments, rockets sites and U-boat construction pens. They were involved in attempts on the lives of enemy leaders, both Hitler and Mussolini, created a false fleet on D-day which fooled the Germans, and knocked out a German super gun which would have rained 600 shells an hour on London.
In After The Flood, John Nichol retraces the path of 617 Squadrons most dangerous sorties as their reputation called them into action again and again.
    Critic Reviews:
"Full of poignant episodes.... A fitting tribute to the raw courage of these young men." (Daily Express)
"A truly epic tale of courage and sacrifice - an intensely moving epitaph to the men of Bomber Command." (Andy McNab)
    Members Reviews:
    so nearly gave up
I so nearly gave up on many occasions trying to listen, it was spoilt by Mr Nichol trying to do impressions and accents, I found it difficult to concentrate when he went off with imitations, in my opinion it would have been so much better had he just narrated in his own voice
    Disappointed
Having struggled to listed through this book I feel compelled to share my disappointment.
Having only just finished listening to The Last British Dambuster I feel this work 'borrows' far too heavily from Johnsons account of the Dambuster raid.
I'm sorry to say the accents used to provide a distinction between the narration and quoted accounts are terrible. Johnson was born in Lincolnshire but the voice actors accent swayed from Yorkshire to something resembling Australian.
The book summary and title offered so much promise but the execution, in my opinion, could alomst verge on plagiarism.

    Language: English
    Release date: 04-17-15
    Publisher: sheena vernon
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: History, European
    Publisher's Summary:
Harry Walsh is a young man on the make. He intends to become a famous singer, little knowing what dramas this will lead him through. He attaches himself to celebrity composer George Frederick Handel, maestro of the Italian opera and a favourite of royalty. But the aristocratic fashion for Handel is cooling. Opposing opera factions, one led by scheming castrato Senesino, knock the great man from his pinnacle. Meanwhile rival impresarios are capturing new audiences with vulgar burlesques and extravagant pleasure gardens. As Harry negotiates his way through these shifts in popular entertainment, his love life proves equally complicated. He develops a passion for Handel's shy, young assistant, Peter, and finds himself tied into a triangle of love that slowly and painfully falls apart. Documenting the launch of the great oratorio, the Messiah, in Dublin, and capturing the self-absorbed world of the singer, this is a light-hearted account of the rise and fall of the Italian opera in Hanoverian London. It is also a well-observed story of confused sexuality and an adolescent yearning for self-esteem and love.
    Members Reviews:
If you love Merchant Ivory films, this is for you.
Sheena Vernons Messiah: Love, Music and Malice at the Time of Handel invites the reader to join a young singer named Harry Walsh on a journey into the milieu of composer George-Frederic Handel, during the time period of 1732 through 1746. This tale of historical fiction is a well-researched page-turner packed with historical detail and diverse characters of such delightful specificity as one might find in the works of Forster, Dickens or Shakespeare. The story follows Harry Walsh and several other engaging fictional characters through their intricate relationships with persons at every level of society. Appearances are made by notable historic figures including Handel, Senesino, Farinelli, Paolo Rolli, John Beard, Sussana Arne Cibber and her brother Thomas Arne. Through Harrys eyes, we are introduced to the musical world of this time period in London, and we are additionally afforded a generous view of both the dominant and subcultures political, economic, artistic, social and sexual theories and practices.
Vernon depicts early 18th century London as a landscape of paradox, at once both familiar and unique. Though of German birth, Handel has become a British citizen, and he writes operas in Italian. The public fetishizes Italian opera but disdains the Italians who sing it and the Protestant German composer who writes it. Previously all the rage, Italian opera is now losing popularity. The style of foppish male clothing is admired among aristocrats but cause for suspicion when exhibited by a commoner. Extremes of wealth and poverty, art and burlesque, pleasure and piety, exist in close proximity. The citys population is international, but xenophobic and incestuous, philanthropic and merciless. It is a fertile breeding ground for art, commerce, opportunity and disease. The soaring spirit of the Messiah is underscored by harsh social constructs and inequities. The author doesnt mention it, but homosexuals are frequently sentenced to death by hanging.

    Riepilogo Editore:
