Great Mystery

I read the book as a teenager and love it. This version was just as great. I have listened to the narrator in other books and he is very good to switch voices between characters. It you like Conan Doyle then this is a great read.

An entertaining adventure

If you like David Case (a.k.a. Frederick Davidson), you'll like this one. If you don't, you won't. I find him entertaining even when he's at his most over the top, and I thoroughly enjoyed this version of the story.

Weak material; weaker narrator

I purchased this audiobook because it had a rating of four-and-a-half stars. I can't imagine why it was rated so highly. The biggest problem for me was the narrator, whose voice was simultaneously dull and irritating. (The audiobook I had listened to right before this was Agatha Christie's "A Pocket Full of Rye," whose narrator was one of the best I've heard.)

The plot of the book itself was uninspired, with a denouement and unmasking of the culprit that could almost have come from an episode of Scooby Doo. The writing was dated and stale, which cannot be due simply to its having been written in 1914 -- the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie spring to life as easily now as they did when published. The dialog is full of ominous pronouncements that are so ham-fisted that any seasoned mystery reader will immediately recognize them as red herrings. If you buy this audiobook keeping all of this in mind and having set your expectations low, you might be entertained by it, but I doubt it.

What more can I say. Listen to this and enjoy the genius of Sherlock, with the infamous battle scene at the end in Switzerland with the deceptive professor Moriarty.

Every BBC dramatisation of sherlock Holmes is music to my ears, probably my favourite purchases on audible! In that case maybe I am bias... ah who cares just but it!!!

EMOTIONAL & GREAT

As the last in this set in the first batch of Sherlock, we some of the most emotional of the Sherlock experiences.

As I have said over & over ; because I own all of these individual shows; I am basically repeating myself. So I say once again, these BBC Radio Sherlocks are the best and I will never tire of them.

If you love Sherlock Holmes you will enjoy these wonderful productions.

Fairly good

Not my favorite reader - his accents wander between American and British. But his feel for Hornung isn't bad, and I'm happy enough to get an audiobook of one of my favorite books of all time.

Not as engaging as Sherlock

While trying to decide how many stars to give this book, I reread the publishers description. I don't think the book reaches the lofty heights described. I can't say the book is bad, nor is it really good -- just OK. I do not think it can be compared to Sherlock Holmes. It is not nearly as compelling.
