    Great stories, poor format
I have long been a reader of Golden Age detective stories (Christie, Sayers, Marsh, Heyer, Allingham, and Crispin, to name a few) and bought this audio book to help me branch out beyond my well-known authors. Short stories from multiple authors seemed a logical choice.
I was not disappointed with the stories at all, but the audio book itself is an issue. The first story is prefaced with the title and author, but the other stories are not separated at all, which was rather disconcerting. The narration is quite excellent; it is only the lack of titles for the latter three stories that is a problem. And it certainly is not an insurmountable problem--the stories are complete and most enjoyable.
Other than the formatting issue, this is a great set of stories for branching out into more "classic" detective fiction. And, really, what could be more British than railway murders?
    Great, old classy stuff
If you love the smell of snuff in your nostils and the clang of the railways iron against iron, you'll love this book, its rustic verbage fits wonderfully, right along with the deerstalker hat of Sherlock, and the rose pin of Periot. I could smell the tea, tabbacco and smug all the way from London 1902 to Chicago, 2004. Great reads.

    Publisher's Summary:
Two American travelers have been killedone with poison, the other with a knife through the heartand the only clues at the scene are a womans wedding ring and the German word for vengeance written in blood. The military surgeon Dr. John Watson is brought in to investigate, along with his clever, arrogant new roommate, Sherlock Holmes. Thus begins one of the most famous crime-solving partnerships of all time in this debut of one of literatures most remarkable detectives. Doyle borrowed his major elementsthe detective of superhuman intellect; cases as fantastical as they are criminal; the final, dramatic resolutionfrom the works of Edgar Allan Poe, adding his own distinctive touches: a strong feeling for the atmosphere of late-Victorian London, an interest in the methods of science, and a chivalric concern for justice and the oppressed.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (18591930) was born of Irish parentage in Scotland. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, but initial poverty as a young practitioner led him into authorship. His first book introduced that prototype of the modern detective in fiction, Sherlock Holmes. He also wrote historical romances and two essays in pseudoscientific fantasy, The Lost World (1912) and The Poison Belt (1913).
    Critic Reviews:
"Valuable to Sherlockians as the beginning of an ageless saga, this novel is also an interesting mystery.Sure to be a hit with mystery readers.Library Journal|[Holmes] is probably the only literary creation since the creations of Dickens which has really passed into the life and language of the people." (G. K. Chesterton)

    Good story, ill chosen narrator
The story is well known, for it is an excellent one. However this recording, whilst listen-able, is not perfect.
The Narrator's unnatural Lucy Ferrier impersonation distracted me from the story.
Also, in the background there are mumbles of another voice, as though another recording was occuring next door.
    Superb!
Great book! Suspenseful. Reading was helpful--different voices for different characters. Conan Doyle really keeps the reader engaged--especially with the change in scene in Part II.
    Distructive Premise
Anti-Mormon Hype written by a person who knew nothing of the Mormon Church or any of it's members.... very misleading and slanderous. Could not get into the mystery of the story because the premise is so phony.

This extraordinary story unfolds in the dim streets of Victorian London's notorious East End. Poverty, squalor and crime fester and proliferate, blighting the lives of all who are unfortunate enough to dwell there. Yet, from within the gloom, shines a beacon of light: the light of human dignity. And, sometimes, righteousness, decency and justice win out.
In this dramatic play - out of the everlasting human conflict of good versus evil, various giants of their time, immortal beings, come into conflict. They form unlikely alliances, each presenting a differing prism of perception, different viewpoints of what is right and what is wrong; ultimately, what is Good and what is Evil.

As I approach the last ten percent of this book I want it to be clear that the only disappointment I have in it is that there are only five more books in the series.

What we call in Opera "A park and Bark". Lets go over here and talk about the story. Let go over here and talk about the story. Bubles of hard core action and then rehashing the story in a coffee shop.
    Not to be missed!
This novel ably demonstrates the considerable literary talents possessed by C. J. Henderson. It's as if H. P. Lovecraft pulled up a chair next to Mr. Henderson's writing desk and collaborated in the creation of this hardboiled supernatural mystery. The story: Teddy London runs New York City's number one private detective agency--well, he did until his office was destroyed by a storm conjured by demons. But Teddy's still in top-notch form, and his new client is a beautiful woman who is being pursued by winged monsters who plan to use her to allow them entry to a portal that will swallow the world in a maelstrom of madness. Teddy is prepared to do battle with the forces of evil, and mankind is dependant upon his victory. This is an ingeniously plotted whirlwind of a novel written with brio and peopled by unforgettable characters. Plus, this is the novel that introduces one of Mr. Henderson's most beloved characters, Lai Wan. Lai Wan is a psychometrist, which means she can read the souls of humans and the history of objects through tactile contact. When Teddy London realizes he needs help to battle the monsters threatening our planet, the beautiful Asian psychometrist, Lai Wan, is sent to join him in battle against the winged hordes. This is a thrilling supernatural escapade that leaves the reader breathless and eager for more Teddy London!

The power of the human voice!
This book provides a perfect example of what I can only describe as the power of the human voice. What exactly do I mean by this? Well, to be completely honest, I feel that in its written form, the story is pretty much a mediocre read. Its the kind of book that reads fairly quickly; keeps the reader somewhat engaged, but doesnt really have much substance or oomph to it at all.
However, when I listened to the audio version narrated by Frederick Davidson, I was blown away! There is no other way for me to describe it, but that he somehow managed to take what I consider to be so-so material, and turned it into a first-class story. His reading performance; his inflection and nuance in shaping the main characters in this book completely changed my perception of the story. I was intrigued; I was moved; I was captivated by the storyline. What a gift this man had! Highly recommend the audio version!
