Potential, But...

This is basically a short story made book length by somewhat creative printing type. The story has fair potential, but makes one think how the same cost would have bought a book of short stories more than 10 times this length if printed in the same type. Sorry, that doesn't get it for me. Quoth the Raven...

Impressively Ordinary

This particular account has broken new ground in my collection of Sherlock Holmes pastiches. In my better than 200 books, most tend to be pretty good although"Barefoot In Baker Street" to my mind is dreadful in a manner that only one other has approached. "Sherlock Homes And The Discarded Cigarette" is memorable for how ordinary it is. The idea of melding Holmes with some science fiction is notable but has been done far better elsewhere. In short the idea is ordinary. Events that take place are not surprising and the reader does not find himself anxiously awaiting what the next page will bring. In short the events are presented in ordinary manners and their presentations could have been done as well using a numbered list.

Characters are ordinary and except for a bitter estranged (understandably) wife and a bad guy who is introduced early in an ordinary manner there's nothing unique there. The book's climax is predicable and, you guessed it, ordinary. Let me try to convey the reality. Imagine a lake that covers a hundred square miles. It has frozen slowly and you stand looking at a wide expanse of perfectly smooth ice with absolutely no features as far as you can see.

After finishing the book I had to chuckle over one thing. I am a retired secondary teacher and during my career taught English, math and various others. English teachers are periodically 'volunteered' to judge writing, poetry, math and other competitions involving various schools. Some of these contests are quite large. Upon occasion I've served as a judge for short story competitions. If the book currently under discussion had been submitted to one of those competitions, it would have been rejected immediately. It's safe to say It would not have made first cut for a competition among AP tenth graders. Again, not because it's that bad but it's that ordinary. Possibly if one can find a competition for totally unremarkable works there it will shine. Not here.

Maybe I didn't read the same edition as the other 2 readers that wrote a critique of this book. The edition I read has so many grammatical errors (I have an English minor) that one would have thought it was written by an individual who has never taken a class on Engish grammar. There were numerous commas missing on every page, there were run-on sentneces, there were "truncated" sentences (actually phrases that were not sentences at all) and the list goes on. The story is, as one critic stated, very ordinary with the outcome rather obvious and anticlimatic. As the other critic stated, it is actually a short story that they literally "spread out" to fill a book (if you purchase it, you'll see what I mean).

Enjoyable Little Yarn

Very enjoyable little yarn spinning itself off the name of Sherlock and his spinning wheel. I forgive it as it is a little gem and at only 49 pence is well worth it.

Funny little story and good acting. More if you please.

Good Reading from Agatha Christie

I suppose it was because Colonel Race is the detective featured, but, before checking, I thought this to be quite an early Christie. Not so, of course, although the original, aÂHercule PoirotÂshort story entitled,"Yellow Iris", was published in July 1937, giving me half-credit. Never mind, whenever written, it is good, if not the best of, Agatha Christie.

The puzzle is an interesting one, the characters well-drawn, and the writing style, of course, authentic Christie. Colonel Race does not possess the color of Poirot or Marple, but he is adequate for the occasion. Christie does give us a number of surprises before the denouement so that there are no dull spots waiting for something to happen.

All-in-all a treat for every Christie fan and, I should think, also, for any fan of the classic style mystery.

Another great Agatha Christie Book

I love Agatha Christie Books, and I can't say I've ever read one I did not like. So, if you like a good, sometimes suspenseful murder mystery then you should like her books. They are generally set in Europe and are set in the 1930ish - 1960ish? time period. So the way of speaking in the book can ( on some of her books) sometimes take some getting used to. But, like I said, pretty good solid murder mystery.

Classic Agatha

Delightful classic Agatha Christie! She offers all the clues, wonderfully developed characters, and then offers you the reader, a chance to solve it. The reality of her characters never fails to astounding me!! I think I may go back and read all of her books!

Another Excellent Mystery by Agatha Christie

I have read almost all of Agatha Christie 's books but somehow missed this one. What a delight it was to read. And the plot was another diabolically clever twist that she excels at. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Wonderfully wound

Another great tale by Agatha Christie! She shows her talent in this one for developing several recognizable characters and weaving their lives, loves and motives together . The real pleasure is that UNwinding them to expose the murderous plot and unlikely culprit is as intriguing a journey as when we first met the characters and got to know them. Written in her best Christie style, this tale is at some points gripping and ultimately very satisfying. A great get away and a good place to visit again!

A good collection of detective short stories in the classic tradition

The Third (and last) in the Trent Series

A collection of really enjoyable short stories featuring the artist, connoisseur, and amateur detective, Philip Trent. After reading one story, it is difficult to stop reading - the stories are fast paced and delightful! E.C. Bentley mysteries are true gems!

THESE STORIES ARE WELL WORTH YOUR TIME

E. C. Bentley, the author of TRENT'S LAST CASE (1913), wrote 13 short mystery stories dealing with the earlier exploits of Philip Trent. Twelve of those stories are included in TRENT INTERVENES (1938). The 13th, titled "The Ministering Angel," appeared in THE STRAND magazine in Nov. 1938 and has been reprinted in at least 3 anthologies that are fairly easy to locate.

Of the 12 stories in this collection, most are fair-play puzzle stories which readers will have a good chance of solving. The others provide enjoyment of other kinds.

Overall, if I were to give this book a letter grade, it would be a B+.
