    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-10-17
    Publisher: MX Publishing
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
In this series of five short stories, Holmes and Watson continue their late investigations into dark crimes in 1920s London, joined by their excitable housekeeper at 221B Baker Street, the brilliant, buxom Miss Lily Hudson, and by Jasper Lestrade of Scotland Yard, the ambitious, respectful son of the late George Lestrade.
Thanks to Royal Jelly, Holmes is a fit 71-year-old, who has lost his interest in bees and returned to detecting, joining forces again with his colleague and friend, Dr. John Hamish Watson, a 73-year-old unfit twice-widower, who hankers after the good old days of derring-do.
Together they explore the case of the Hampstead Ponies, where a murdered baby is found upon the Heath; the Chelsea Necrophile and the mysterious organ that plays itself; the Holland Park Cannibal with a taste for home-made sausages; the truly nightmarish Richmond Werewolf; and the dangers of contagion in the search for the Hammersmith Hound.

    Top Of The Line
This is a marvelous read. The reader is kept spellbound by the nonstop action, involved plots and descriptive elements that transports one back to those days of horrifying violence, criminality and squalor of unbelievable magnitudes. At least one of the stories pointed out something that is often overlooked in mystery writing. Many mysteries involve acts of mayhem, extortion and other horrific events needing to be solved by the hero. Often overlooked are the parts played in criminality by so-called 'Upstanding' citizens. It's the old supply and demand thing. Have an example. Any who watch the news is familiar with the appalling violence that takes place in border towns along the Mexico/US border. Places like Juarez, Tijuana and others are war zones. This violence originates in contests to control the lucrative drug trade. If the demand suddenly evaporated, drug kingpins couldn't give that stuff away.
So the violence in these towns results because of the highly-paid professionals who think it cool to do a few lines after a hard day at the office. Many blame the drug demand upon inner cities. Not so; inner cities don't have the economic bases to support cocaine use measured in tons. How this digression applies to the Holmes/Watson accounts under review is they point out that horrific crimes are committed because of demands that come from many individuals who are considered respectable in every way. After you read the book you'll know exactly what I'm tailing about.
Save this book for a Friday evening with nothing scheduled the next day. You are in for a roller-coaster ride provided by a Holmes/Watson writer at the very top of his game. It doesn't get better than this.
    The good and the bad
This book was several adventures, some of them quite good but some of them disappointing (example/spoiler: It's just a dream). An okay book.
More hidden gems too hot for publication when the were written!
The Final Tales of Sherlock Holmes II featuring âThe Case of the Hampstead Poniesâ by John A Little
My thanks to Steve and Timi at MX Publishing for my review copy of this book. You are the custodians of all things Sherlock Holmes!
This is the second volume in a series that began with The Musical Murders. As I said in that review, the secret of how these stories were found is a solid one. They were written by Doctor Watson, submitted to the Strand and rejected.

    Publisher's Summary:
This is New Orleans - 1950. She crossed Canal Street from the neutral ground, walked right past Private Eye Lucien Caye, and he watched her come and go, both views unforgettable. A woman can do that on occasion, sear an indelible image in a man's mind. She remained a snapshot until a week later when she stepped from the darkness beneath the balcony of Lucien's building shortly after midnight, on a sultry Thursday night.
Thus begins a most elusive case, a case of obsession and murder, a case that will baffle Lucien, intrigue him, make him fall in love - three times. The case of a desirable woman enamored of an undesirable man defies understanding, yet the human heart rarely listens to the human brain. A smart guy like Lucien should know better, but his mind has trouble controlling his libido, much less his heart.
Born in New Orleans, O'Neil De Noux is a prolific American writer of novels and short stories. Much of his fiction falls under the mystery genre described by critics as hyper-realistic, character-driven crime fiction. He has 30 books in print and over 300 short story sales in multiple genres.
Mr. De Noux's writing has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Shamus Award for Best Short Story (Shamus Awards are given annually to recognize outstanding achievement in private eye fiction) and the Derringer Award for Best Novelette (Derringer Awards are given annually by the Short Mystery Fiction Society to recognize excellence in the short mystery fiction form). De Noux's novel John Raven Beau was named 2011 Police Book of the Year. Two of his stories have appeared in the Best American Mystery Stories anthology (2013 and 2007).
O'Neil De Noux was the 2012-2013 Vice-President of the Private Eye Writers of America.

You can't go wrong with a Lucien Caye novel
If you could sum up Enamored in three words, what would they be?
Steamy, fun, lagniappe (if you don't know or aren't from New Orleans... look it up).
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
As a matter of fact it did, just one thing after another, the way a good book should be.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I like it all but did think any scene in which Lucien's neighbor John showed up in was fun.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A New Orleans in the 1950's like you never imagined
    Any additional comments?
Give this one a try, I certainly like it.
    Not your classic PI
Would you listen to Enamored again? Why?
Yes, I really like Lucien Caye and I love New Orleans. This book take you back to the way it was in the 1950's.
What did you like best about this story?
There were so many parts I liked it is hard to choose one.
What about Scott Galloway Smiths performance did you like?
Mr. Galloway helps bring the story alive. Although I thoroughly enjoy De Noux's writing, it is alway fun to have hear the character's and not just imagine it in my head.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
This New Orleans PI makes you wish you could walk in his shoes.

It is the eighth of the 12 stories collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It is one of four Sherlock Holmes stories that can be classified as a locked room mystery. The story was first published in Strand Magazine in February 1892, with illustrations by Sidney Paget. It was published under the different title "The Spotted Band" in New York World in August 1905. Doyle later revealed that he thought this was his best Holmes story.

    Language: English
    Release date: 02-17-17
    Publisher: SAGA Egmont
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Allan Pinkerton, a Scotsman by birth and a barrel maker by trade, settled in Chicago in its infancy and founded the Pinkertons, the world's first detective agency. Though events associated with the agency after his death have tarnished the name, Pinkerton himself was one of the original human rights advocates. He was a dear friend to John Brown, an advisor to Abraham Lincoln, and 80 years ahead of his time in hiring female detectives.
"The Expressman and the Detective" (1874) is Pinkerton's first attempt at putting his real life experiences into novel form. Though many later works attributed to Pinkerton are understood to have been ghostwritten, this is the work of the man the London Times calls "a man at once deeply admirable and quite obnoxious".

    Interesting on several levels
This book is essentially a very early police procedural. We know from the beginning who did it, and the book is all about how they were brought to justice. The story concerns Nathan Maroney, a station agent for Adams Express, who is suspected of stealing $50,000 cash from his employer in two separate thefts, in 1859. Maroney is a very clever criminal, and it takes a team of detectives several months to corner him.
The cat and mouse game between Maroney and his wife, on the one hand, and Pinkerton's detectives and spies on the other, is interesting enough in itself. The book is also provides a fascinating look into daily life in the US in the mid-nineteenth century, including the cultural divisions between north and south, the way the genders interacted, social mores, what rail travel was like, etc. Although the author had no intention of creating a cultural document, he couldn't help but do so in telling a story that spans several months, so many locations, and such a large number of characters.
The book is also interesting for its description of Kate Warne, probably America's first female detective, and how she gained the confidence of Maroney's wife, who was hiding the money.
As some other reviewers have noted, the plot, by the standards of today's commercial thrillers, doesn't exactly race along. But it moves well enough, and the characters are interesting enough to make you want to linger a while without just racing blindly to the next plot point. The book is well written, in what is, by 19th century standards, fairly straighforward prose.
This is an excellent book to study how our justice system worked in the mid 19th century.
This is an obviously an embellished story of one of Pinkertonâs first cases. I found it to be interesting in how he unwittingly portrays justice at that time. The reader will find he had no qualms about setting up a person to fulfill his mission. He obviously considered this poetic justice. I think in the context of those times, I would agree with him. While this is a self serving story I did find the way he accomplished his work amazing. The vernacular he uses is also amusing and rather âcornyâ to the modern reader, although this usage was used at that time. I am glad this âdocumentaryâ was not edited for the benefit of todayâs reader.
    A period piece
Fun to read - definitely a period piece, being actually written by Allan Pinkerton. Got a little tedious with descriptions and details in the middle of the book, which I believe was common for writers of the day.

From the Collins Crime Club archive, the fourth Inspector French novel by Freeman Wills Crofts, once dubbed 'The King of Detective Story Writers'.
The Body That Came from Nowhere
Off the coast of Burry Port in South Wales, two fishermen discover a shipping crate and manage to haul it ashore. Inside is the decomposing body of a brutally murdered man. With nothing to indicate who he is or where it came from, the local police decide to call in Scotland Yard. Fortunately Inspector Joseph French does not believe in insoluble cases - there are always clues to be found if you know what to look for. Testing his theories with his accustomed thoroughness, French's ingenuity sets him off on another investigation.
    Critic Reviews:
"Inspector French is as near the real thing as any sleuth in fiction." (Sunday Times)
"A detective novel by Mr. Wills Crofts is always an event to those who know.... Mr. Crofts is among the few muscular writers of detective fiction. He has never let me down." (Harold Nicolson, Daily Express)
    Members Reviews:
    Great detective puzzles
I love these stories with their meticulous focus on the details of the mystery and the actions of Inspector French to try and puzzle them out. If you're looking for in depth development of the characters and their relationships then these stories aren't for you, but I find the step by step unravelling of the mystery, in a time when landline telephones and telegrams were the most rapid forms of communication, great fun. Phil Fox is a very good narrator, pacing his delivery well and voicing the different characters sufficiently to tell them apart, but without going over the top. I'm looking forward to more in this series.
Freeman Wills Croft at his best
This the 4 book following the Starvel Hollow case, finds the author and his inspectors skill growing. The detail in caricatures, places and narrative are superbly crafted. inspector French goes about his work with such realistic detail, with clear human undertaking and limitations, making him so believable. You can see late creations of Morse etc being infected by Wills Crofts art form.
    Excellent of its type
Wills Crofts is very good at impossible situations which he resolves with breathtaking timings.
The narrator was very good. The ending was most satisfying.
    Absolutely brilliant
Third of these I have listened to. Take the series in order but they do stand alone. Well read, easy to follow and gripping stories. I am looking forward to the others.
