Just okay
I didn't really like this book. It was a little bit boring for me. I had to buy another book on leadership impacts.
High Impact Leader
I would give this book a five star rating. The book is innovative, contemporary and useful for anyone who is currently a leader in their profession's looking for insights on being more effective or MBA students who wish to learn what it means to be a leader. You will learn if leaders are born or made and how to be an effective and flexible situational leader. Excellent insights and real life examples.
Eh...
This book is little more than a glorified self-help. The fact of the matter is that leadership is not something that can be learned from a book, even one like this that bothers addressing the reader's story. If you're looking for a quick fix to satisfy someone telling you to meet a requirement, this isn't terrible. If you're looking for real help, though? Well... look elsewhere.
My Second Most Favourite Leadership Book
I am in the business of teaching leadership development and am myself an author of a book on motivation and organizational change. Of the shelves of books I've read on leadership this book continues to be my #2 favourite. This book is actually about what is called "self-leadership": how to consciously work at self-development as a leader. They propose a process that is practical, effective and, if followed diligently, will accelerate one's leadership development. I practice their method daily and it continues to serve me after about 10 years of practice. If you can only read two books on leadership I recommend (#1) "Leadership Without Easy Answers" by Ron Heifetz (about what a leader does) and "The High Impact Leader" (how a leader develops).
A promising framework & more promising measurement system
Avolio & Luthans Meta analysis, creates a framework for determining impact or return on development for authentic leadership development. This work could be rated more highly if the the rest of the protocol were available even at the website. Most of us working in the domain of leadership development would like to know what the impact is over time. Many of us would submit data, if the inquiry elements and time intervals were known so that our data was comparable.
