    Meh
This is a very short book, and that's just not the 151 page count as the book measures 5" x 7" and can easily be finished in an hour or two. The story focuses on Elsie Feather and her family as the US Government forces the Cherokees to relocate and the long "trail of tears" to get to their new *home*. A promising premise for a novel, but there just isn't enough meat on the bones to really engage the reader, like a full length novel with better character development might have. If a copy falls in your lap (as mine did) and you have a bit of time to kill this might interest, but otherwise I'd give it a miss.
Review for A Trail of Broken Promises
`A Trail of Broken Promises' by Jess Davon Joslin is a beautifully written, heart wrenching story of a young Cherokee woman that losses everything she has, but gains an inner strength she didn't know she possessed.
I couldn't put this book down once I started it. Jess Davon Joslin does an amazing job of bringing the story alive. Elsie Feather is a young Cherokee woman married to the family shaman. She has her world ripped away from her in a moment, not knowing where her family is or if they are even still alive. She is forced from her home with nothing but the clothes she has on...The devastation takes its toll on many of the Cherokee as they are forced into holding camps until their time to march to their `new land' arrives. Finding what little hope she can during the ensuing months, Elsie must find inner strength as she loses more than most can bear.
This is a story of strength, courage, heartbreak and the power of love for family and God...

    It's All Right
This was a decent little read, more like a novella than a novel tho. It follows Elsie Feather as she is forced to leave her plantation and slaves (Yes, that surprised me too) to travel the Trail of Tears to the newly formed Indian Territory. The year is 1835 and the going is rough.
I never knew the Cherokees lived the way they did. Growing up in Oklahoma, I heard a lot about the Trail of Tears and always visualized Indians with bows, arrows, feathers, and tomahawks wearing fringe and beads and moccasins so I can honestly say I learned a thing or two from this. It does, however, need some better editing. There were some misspelled words and just some overall strange things like if Elsie is looking at her husband in the crowd ahead, how in the world does he call out her name from behind her? I was also hoping for more depth.

    Really Good Historical Fiction
While this is a romance, that is not its strength. The romantic elements are not really developed as opposed to the historical context and background that Ms. Bradshaw provides us in what becomes an excellent glimpse into a time that perhaps most know little about.
London, after the victory of Parliament over Charles I was not all celebration and happiness, but was in turmoil, the victors fighting over the spoils of war as happens frequently when the victors are not led by one mind. We see this as our heroine comes to London for the first time and has to deal with allies who were oppressors, family that loves and hates her, and a city that is tightly held in an inflationary spiral which happens when a country has been beset by a war that has ravished it.
Add the religious pressures that Parliament was suffering as well to this mix where all those who know the truth of their vision of god tried to wrest control of the nation, and London is indeed in Chains as Ms Bradshaw names the book. What we see also is the rise of printing in this era and a comment that is made, about how no General would dare go to war without their own press, (which reminds me a great deal of Douglas Macarthur) and we see that our Heroine is poised to show us a glimpse of this period that I had no idea of. Before this work, I thought Parliament won, Charles was incarcerated and eventually Parliament voted to behead him, and then Cromwell was made supreme. Yet much was to be done before that happened as I now know. (I am a product of the US education system)
Though there is a romance for our Heroine, and some little time is devoted to it, it does not seem fully fledged as the hero of this action is taken away off stage. That there is some interaction and words between hero and heroine to put the building blocks for a relationship and that they view each other philosophically similarly might breed true, but still, if romance be ones first inclination, more should take place. If History is what you would like to delve into in a period piece, than look no further for the period of 1647 and 1648 one can do little better. At every turn of the page Ms Bradshaw is able to add depth to her world, painting with words details that little occurred to me, but that I think all would find enriching. I recommend this to those who find history of an interest in their reading.
New historical time period, same excellent writing
I'm a huge fan of Gillian Bradshaw's writing, and this lives up to her best, along side Island of Ghosts, Beacon of Alexandria, and Wolf Hunt. When I first read this book five years ago, I felt as though it was burning a hole in my backpack while I was in class. The characters are engaging, the plot is suspenseful, and the historical detail makes the period come to life.

    Publisher's Summary:
In this sequel to The Raj Quartet, Colonel Tusker and Lucy Smalley stay on in the hills of Pankot after Indian independence deprives them of their colonial status. Finally fed up with accommodating her husband, Lucy claims a degree of independence herself. Eloquent and hilarious, she and Tusker act out class tensions among the British of the Raj and give voice to the loneliness, rage, and stubborn affection in their marriage.
Staying On won the Booker Prize and was made into a motion picture starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson in 1979.
    Critic Reviews:
"Scott's vision is both precise and painterly. Like an engraver cross-hatching in the illusion of fullness, he selects nuances that will make his characters take on depth and poignancy." (The New York Times Book Review)
    Members Reviews:
An oustanding book about the last remnants of the English Raj living on in India: hilarious without ever condescending
A Quartet and a sequel (this volume), and I wish it went on for another five volumes. The writing is outstanding, and this time around they are mostly hilarious. I mean "laugh out loud funny." The Raj Quartet itself is generally much more sober, though it does have playful elements that never strike a wrong note. As for Staying On:
British rule in India is long over, but Lucy and "Tusker" Smalley remember when things were different. Not better, because of course India had to be handed over to the Indians, it's just that one was born at the wrong time, too young to retire, too old to go "home" to England and start something new, especially since the trip home would cost most of one's savings and the old pension wouldn't be enough to live on. So, one stayed on and made do, and remembered the proper way to do things while enjoying, or pretending to enjoy, the new ways things were done. In fact, one remembered that the "proper ways" usually left one out in the cold, snubbed, at the bottom of the social hierarchy that was so strict in British India. Now, one was thrust in among the new Indian middle classes while keeping, on form alone, some connection to the Indian higher classes that came from new money, black market money.
Without really thinking about it, one's true friends had become a most peculiar assortment of people from varying classes, divided by community stature, wealth, poverty, religion, employment, history, and interests, and often united only by a common friendship with one's self. Extraordinary, really. Better not to think about it, just to press on and have another drink and walk the blasted dog and rage about whatever seems to be most annoying this particular day. At least, Tusker would rage, but never Lucy, though she was built of stern stuff, just on a tiny frame and hidden by a graciousness that was not apparent 30 years ago, in the company of women who constantly snubbed her because she had once had to work for a living. No, in those days she seemed timid, compliant and always to be saying the wrong thing.
This book plays no favorites. People are shown to be who they are, and they are individuals who may be Christian, Muslim, Hindu or Sikh. They are imperfect, some more so than others.

    Publisher's Summary:
A collection of never-before-translated stories by the best-selling author of Suite Française, this is a gorgeous, gemlike volume with the same attention to detail that won Irène Némirovsky so many fans. Written between 1934 and 1942, these 10 stories mine the same terrain as her best-selling novels: a keen eye for the details of social class; the tensions between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives; the manners and mannerisms of the French bourgeoisie; and questions of religion and personal identity. Moving from the drawing rooms of prewar Paris to the lives of men and women in wartime France, here is the beautiful work of a writer at the height of her tragically short career.
    Critic Reviews:
Ten luminous and newly translated stories by Némirovsky, who died at Auschwitz, expose the miseries that undermine happy families.these accomplished tales create worlds full of secrets and treacheries. In this superlative translation, Némirovsky's characters emerge full-fleshed, and her voice remains timeless and relevant. (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
[A] gorgeous collection.Elegant, magnetic, and devastating stories of marriage, mothers and daughters, youth and age, rich and poor. Each faceted, cutting tale exposes the barely concealed resentments and envy underlying marriages desiccated by routinely unfaithful husbands, martyred wives, and shiny, selfish children, especially beautiful daughters who hold their muted mothers in contempt.Némirovsky was an empathic, prescient, and boldly clinical dramatist in the mode of Chekhov, Maupassant, and Colette. Just couldn't get into it
I just couldn't finish this book right now. I don't think that is because it was bad or uninteresting, but rather because I just wasn't in the right frame of mind. In fact, I'm pretty sure this would be a great book if I wanted to take the time to really get into it. It is a collection of short stories about interpersonal relationships with an ironic twist at the end, things that I usually really love to read, but I just need to read something different than this right now. It will go on my "Finish some other time, or in another life" shelf. I don't want that shelf to get too heavy with books. I like to finish what I start, but I just had to put a halt to this one for the time being.
Part of my not liking this book a whole lot is because of the narrator. She wasn't bad, but she wasn't really good either. I think it is just a matter of taste, and she just didn't fit with mine.

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In this astonishing novel, a brilliant melange of fact and fiction, Juliet Gael skillfully and stylishly captures the passions, hopes, dreams, and sorrows of literature's most famous sistersand imagines how love dramatically and most unexpectedly found Charlotte Bronte.
During the two years that she studied in Brussels, Charlotte had a taste of lifes splendors: travel, literature, and art. Now, back home in the Yorkshire moors, duty-bound to a blind father and an alcoholic brother, an ambitious Charlotte refuses to sink into hopelessness. With her sisters, Emily and Anne, Charlotte conceives a plan to earn money and pursue a dream: The Brontes will publish. In childhood the Bronte children created fantastical imaginary worlds; now the sisters craft novels quite unlike anything written before. Transforming her loneliness and personal sorrow into a triumph of literary art, Charlotte pens her 1847 masterpiece, Jane Eyre.
Charlotte's novel becomes an overwhelming literary success, catapulting the shy and awkward young woman into the spotlight of Londons fashionable literary scene and into the arms of her new publisher, George Smith, an irresistibly handsome young man whose interest in his fiercely intelligent and spirited new author seems to go beyond professional duty. But just as life begins to hold new promise, unspeakable tragedy descends on the Bronte household, throwing London and George into the background and leaving Charlotte to fear that the only romance she will ever find is at the tip of her pen.
But another man waits in the Bronts Haworth parsonage: the quiet but determined curate Arthur Nicholls. After secretly pining for Charlotte since he first came to work for her father, Arthur suddenly reveals his heart to her.
Romancing Miss Bronte is a fascinating portrayal of an extraordinary woman whose life and work articulated our deepest human longing: to love and be loved in return.

    Love this book
As spare and powerful as its subjects' writings, this book gives a peek inside the genius of the Brontes, borne of their ordinary surroundings and extraordinary imaginations. Part fact and part fiction, the author makes you feel as if you know these characters and understand the hardships and joys that contributed to their works. A pleasure to read, both for Bronte-ites and novices.
    Wonderful, restful and interesting
This is an interesting book that, except for the dialogues and private scenes between people, could have been a solid work of non fiction. The tone of the book is gentle, of the period, but the message is contemporary. In spite of being very intelligent and resourceful, life was tough for these three women, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte. It's well read, difficult to put down and restful.
    Love Rosalyn Landor
The story was interesting, but I could listen to anything narrated by Rosalyn Landor. I didn't know much about the Brontes' lives, so I enjoyed learning this sad story.
    As Erica said....
I don't think I can do better that what Erica said. Her review is spot on. A very enjoyable read!
    clever idea; clumsy execution
This just didn't come together as a good listen for me.
Landor can be a good narrator, but here she seems to be trying too hard to be dra-ma-tic.

    Publisher's Summary:
Arriving in the ancient Byzantine city in the year 1273, Anna Zarides has only one mission: to prove the innocence of her twin brother, Justinian, who has been exiled to the desert for conspiring to kill Bessarion, a nobleman. Disguising herself as a eunuch named Anastasius, Anna moves freely about in society, using her skills as a physician to maneuver close to the key players involved in her brothers fate.
With her medical practice thriving, Anna crosses paths with Zoe Chrysaphes, a devious noblewoman with her own hidden agenda, and Giuliano Dandolo, a ships captain conflicted not only by his mixed Venetian-Byzantine heritage but by his growing feelings for Anastasius.
Trying to clear her brothers name, Anna learns more about Justinians life and reputation, including his peculiar ties to Bessarions beautiful widow and his possible role in a plot to overthrow the emperor. This leaves Anna with more questions than answers, and time is running out. For an even greater threat lies on the horizon: Another Crusade to capture the Holy Land is brewing, and leaders in Rome and Venice have set their sights on Constantinople for what is sure to be a brutal invasion.
Annas discoveries draw her inextricably closer to the dangers of the emperors treacherous court - where it seems that no one is exactly who he or she appears to be.
Richly detailed and finely wrought, The Sheen on the Silk is a bold and brilliant work that affirms Anne Perrys talent as a master storyteller.

    not my cup of tea
Perhaps if you like Perry AND "Pillars of the Earth" and/or "Sacred Hearts" type listens, you'll enjoy this.
As in her Victorian series, Perry is good on verisimilitude- detail of clothes and food and buildings- but I'm not sure she gets the history of the mentalities any better (but either does Follet). I think Perry's prose is better than usual and she attempts to be more literary in "Sheen" - but still I found it very tedious - too many improbable conversations and even more improbable overheard conversations. At least Perry doesn't assault the ears with graphic violence and sex like a "Pillars."
The narrator was competent but wouldn't be my choice for this novel-too young and breathy.
One of us - either Perry or me -- should stick with the 19th century.
    Enlightening
Anne Perry never ceases to amaze me!! Well researched and thought provoking as well as a great story. Reader was also excellent.
    Oh my!
I couldn't get into the William Monk series by Anne Perry. Just not my cup of tea. This book came out of left field to whack me in the head! Wow. I wasn't just listening to a story, I was immersed in the world of 13th century Byzantine culture. I know a little about Byzantine culture and this book inspired me to learn much more. It is long and has the occasional dragging any long book does but I was very sorry when it was over. In the character of Zoe Chrysaphes, Perry has created an icon. Is she a villain or just willing to do whatever it takes to save her culture and country? The behavior of the main character, Anna Zarides, may seem unbelievable at first. It is, a little. We have to remember the restrictions put on the behavior of women in 1271 anywhere, and still in some places today. I really enjoyed this book, even the slow parts.

The book is slow to start, and does not pick up the pace quickly.
That said, the writing is excellent and it was a surprise how I kept my interest.
Some of the Author notes in the back are very unexpected.
The stories are true, as true as a historical novel can make them.
And Norma Bonesteel is based on a real person. That is like saying that Granny Weatherwax (prachett) was real. Spooky.
I gave this to a coworker who likes historical fiction and he is in awe about it.
Absolutely loved this book as I have loved all of McCrumb's ...
Absolutely loved this book as I have loved all of McCrumb's Ballad series. Historical fiction at its finest...told through several perspectives over several generations. I am continuing to read through the Ballad books, now on my 7th in the series. Frankie Silver's story, to date, is my favorite. I highly recommend McCrumb's books to those who, like me, are lovers of history, great story telling, and all things Appalachian.
"You'll count your fingers after shaking hands with the preacher"
Thought provoking book. This book was very telling in the way in which the court system worked in the 1800s and how similar things are (in some ways) today. We have come a long way, but we still have a tendency to convict the innocent based on preconceived notions & opinions relating to their background and family history rather than by reasonable doubt. Regular folks are not educated on the law as much as they should be and rely heavily (and pay) attorneys to protect their rights and inform them as to legal procedure, but that doesn't always happen. We should all make an extra effort to learn about our individual liberties.
Fascinating storyline & characters! The Play is gonna be great!
Excellent book! I'm in an original Play adapted from this book....tonight is its debut! The author Sharyn McCrumb will be there! Based on true life event of Frankie Silver who lived up here in the Appalachian mountains...with a twist! Great story that will keep you in suspense to the very end! Great characters that you feel you know throughout book! A must read!

    Members Reviews:
    Incredibly dull
Several things to note about this book:
This is not a series with rotating leads, but rather a series where plot points apparently aren't resolved until the final book. At the end of this book, nothing is established. I felt like I'd just finished 300 pages of background.
The book is deadly dull. Long, boring descriptions and tedious "lighthearted" conversations between the cousins take up a great deal of the book. The authors don't seem to care too much about their plot. Fanny likes Michael, but isn't sure if he likes her back. A few hundred pages in (after pages and pages of brooding and detailed conversations with her cousins), she asks him if he does, and he tells her so. You're not exactly in the hands of master storytellers here.
The Christianity seems really tacked on. The way to tell a Christian from a non-Christian is that Christians will say things like "Well, we should trust God" or look around when they're outside and think "This is a wonderful world that God has made." In terms of seeing it impact their lives and decision making . . . It doesn't. In fact, one of the key messages of the book is that it is good to care about the poor -- just don't care too much, because that's bad (caring "too much" would seem to be anything that impacts your life, the life of your family, or your precious standard of living).
The characters are laughable stereotypes. Jonas is such an one-dimensionally evil character -- I kept expecting him to announce his plan to tie Fanny to the railroad tracks to get her fortune. His interior monologue is ridiculously unrealistic.
But really, all you need to know is that this book is incredibly, amazingly, almost unfathomably dull. The least I expected was to have plot points resolved, but even that simple pleasure is denied you by these authors. I wouldn't recommend this book to anybody.
A Daughter's Inheritance (the Broadmoor Legacy Book #1)
A note to start, this is a cliff hanger. The story is of a young 17 year old girl Fanny Broadmoor, who is an heiress of a large estate. The family and especially her oldest uncle are in an uproar because she will inherit a third of her grandfather's money. Fanny's uncle plots in every conceivable way to bilk her out the inheritance her grandfather has set aside for her. Michael is a childhood friend and son of one of the workers on the estate. The two have always had a close relationship that has blossomed into love.

    Ladylike historical romance...
...with a little bit of thriller.
I always liked this story. I have it in ppb. It is the first in a splendid series of Regency romantic adventures featuring Miss Mary Finch and Captain Holland, but this audio book is absolutely wonderful. Jane Collingwood does a fantastic job and brings Mary, in particular, to life. I really recommend this to all lovers of Regency period romance with an added dash of wickedness from those dastardly French Revolutionaries. Take a chance, it's well worth it.
I hope Audibles release the next two soon?
