    Dear Inga,
Im thinking it is not good for my baby and me to stay much longer in Whistle Creek, Idaho. The sheriff is showing altogether too much interest. I suppose I should feel flattered, for Carson Barclay is not only strikingly handsome, but a man of character and faith who has shown Keary and me considerable kindness. But Im afraid his affections are ones I cannot return. The secret I bear makes a future with him impossible.
Yet Inga, when Sheriff Barclay is near, its everything in my Irish heart that wishes otherwise.
    Your friend, Mary Emeline Malone
Idaho: mountainous, rugged. Men go there to find their fortunes in the silver mines - and lose their pasts. But as Mary Malone discovers, sometimes the past is not so easily shaken. It will take a good mans strong, persistent love to penetrate the young immigrants defenses and disarm the secret that makes a hostage of her heart.
In His Arms is Book Three in the Coming to America series about women who come to America to start new lives. Set in the late 1800s and early 1900s, these novels by best-selling author Robin Lee Hatcher craft intense chemistry and conflict between the characters, lit by a glowing faith and humanity that will win your heart. Look for other books in the series at your favorite Christian bookstore.

"In His Ams", a sweet love story.
What made the experience of listening to In His Arms the most enjoyable?
First of all being able to listen to it on my Kindle rather than reading the text.
It always amazes me when I hear the narrators that were chosen and how perfect they were for the part. It makes listening such a pleasurable experience.
What other book might you compare In His Arms to and why?
I am new to the audible books, so as I have listened to a variety of subjects, I cannot say that I have listened to one that I can compare this to. Maybe down the road as I become more experienced, this will be an easier question for me to answer
    Which scene was your favorite?
When Mary Malone had taken over the Painted Lady and she was confronted by Mr. Kendrick.
    Any additional comments?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I realize it was one of a series that the author has re-written for Zondervan to be considered a Christian book. It is refreshing to read this kind of book and not have foul language or scenes that are corrupt.
Another good example of audible trumping text!
    Enjoyable Reading
If you could sum up In His Arms in three words, what would they be?
This is the first of Robin Lee Hatcher's books that I've read, and I must say I enjoyed it very much.

I love the Jean Plaidy's novels
I love the Jean Plaidy's novels. Epitaph for Three Women is the twelfth novel in a collection of thirteen that follows the lives of the Plantagenet rulers of England. The book is wonderful. I am about half way through this novel and it is a fantastic story of intrigue and underhandedness. I can barely put the book down. It was also fabulous reading more about Saint Joan of Arc.
    Five Stars
    Good book!
    Jean Plaidy hhistorical fiction
Love this book which is part of the Plantagenet series by Jean Plaidy. I was so thrilled to be able to find and obtain this book to complete my collection through the used section of Amazon.
    Three women...ambitious, virtous and serene.
Jean Plaidy never disappoints when she weaves her magic into the stories of long ago. Epitaph For Three Women is another of her fine works of art.
Katherine of Valois, married to Henry V, is a new widow with a the young Henry VI to bring to the throne. While she lives contented she soon finds love with a Welsh squire by the name of Owen Tudor. She and Owen have such a pure love and they wed in secret, just before a law passes stating that no woman of nobility can marry below her rank. And Katherine is with child. Her dreams of happiness have finally come true, until her secret is finally out...
Joan of Arc...Wow! What a human being! She had such devotion to God that He gives her a task: to save France from the English. And Joan (or Jeanette in her native French) does so with great strife and struggle. She was visited by St. Catherine, St. Margaret and the Archangel Michael who gave her strength in her times of utter despair. And even when the French King turned his back on her (after she led the French army in a battle to have him crowned in Rheims) she was still devoted to him in every way. She was soon captured by the English and burned at the stake as a witch. But they clearly burned a saint. All this before she even reached 20!
Eleanor of Gloucester was just a peasant girl who had high ambitions. The Duke of Gloucester fell under her 'love spell.' Eleanor was a great believer in witchcraft and with the help of a certain 'witch' she was soon married to the most powerful man in England, aside from the King. Unfortunately, her ambitions would in the end bring on her demise as well as others around her. She never would bear the child she so longed for and her hopes of doing away with the young King would amount to nothing.
Epitaph For Three Women is an exceptional piece of work.

An Land allerdings ist er ungeschickt und bereitet sich dadurch selbst viele Probleme. Oft, aber nicht immer, kann Maturin helfend eingreifen.

An insightful journey through the volatile frontiers of American slavery, this unforgettable story is the riveting primary source for Alex Haleys Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Roots. Hwesuhunus life is portrayed in heartbreaking detail. Starting with his capture by French slave traders and the horrors of the Middle Passage, The African recounts his heroic fight for survival while shipwrecked on the island of Saint Lucia, his enslavement on a Georgia plantation, and his fate-driven quest for freedom as a runaway. Throughout these ordeals, Courlander passionately and eloquently conveys the full panorama of Hwesuhunus emotions, from the desperate confusion over his plight to his consuming search for his lifes meaning. Peter Francis James deeply resonant voice brings Courlanders masterful prose to life with power and purpose.

Wish I had found this gem years ago. Though not the epic that was "Roots" but its powerful non the less. The actor who did the reading did a remarkable job with the many accents of the various characters.

A classic novel that cements my appreciation of the ancestors who've suffered, yet found a way to triumph....

"Maitland has conjured up a medieval world startling in its brutality and unrivaled in it's fury." (Booklist)

    utterly enthralling, loved every minute
I'd read Company of Liars, and didn't think another book could come close to that, but The Owl Killers exceeded all my expectations. It was utterly enthralling from start to finish and I loved every minute.
It did take me half an hour or so to get into it, but after that I became increasingly immersed in the character development and the story line, and David Thorpe's narration was fantastic.
As with Company of Liars, the descriptions are so good that you can almost feel & smell what it was like to live in those times! The plot is intriguing, the descriptions vivid and I found the book totally addictive - I couldn't stop listening and was disapointed when I got to the end.
    Entralling mystical medieval
It took me about an hour of listening to really get into this imaginative and enthralling story and become familiar with the five characters through whom the story would be told. It's an extraordinary novel that brings medieval existence to life in all its day-to-day privations, subservience to the local lord, superstitions and fears of eternal damnation drummed into the populace by an unforgiving Church. It's a very powerful story of the struggle between good and evil centred around a village somewhere near Norwich where a group of women from Low Countries have setup a religious community that is distrusted by the Church and by the local community who are still in thrall to pagan beliefs exploited by a band of Owl Masters who terrorize them.
Much of the pleasure and power of this book is due to the exceptionally good narrator, David Thorpe, who brings a wealth of characters to life by giving them individual voices by which they are easily identified in this roller-coaster of a story.
Don't be put off by mixed reviews
I considered all the readers reviews but as they seemed to indicate listeners either thought it great or awful it was always a gamble. however as I had enjoyed company of liars I thought give it a go. Yes it does take a while to get into and yes some of the characters are initially confusing as they all have the same names Martha this and Martha that. But as it unfolded so did the characters, the story and the intrigue.

  • The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog and of His Friend Marilyn Monroe Audiobook by Andrew O'Hagan

Title: The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog and of His Friend Marilyn Monroe
    Author: Andrew O'Hagan
    Narrator: John Keating
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-27-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 16 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In November 1960, Frank Sinatra gave Marilyn Monroe a dog. His name was Mafia Honey, or Maf for short. He had an instinct for celebrity. For politics. For psychoanalysis. For literature. For interior decoration. For Liver Treat with a side order of National Biscuits.
Born in the household of Vanessa Bell, brought to the United States by Natalie Wood's mother, given as a Christmas present to Marilyn after she separated from Arthur Miller, Maf offers a keen insight into the world of Hollywood's greatest star... not to mention a hilarious peek into the brain of an opinionated, well-read, politically scrappy, complex canine hero.
Maf was with Marilyn for the last two years of her life - first in New York, where she mixed with everyone who was anyone (including the art dealer Leo Castelli and Lee Strasberg and the Actors Studio crowd), and then back to Los Angeles. Marilyn took him to meet President Kennedy and to Hollywood restaurants, department stores, and interviews. They also went to Mexico for her divorce.
With style, brilliance, and panache, Andrew OHagan has drawn an altogether original portrait of the woman behind the icon - and the dog behind the woman.
    Editorial Reviews:
Most people can easily think of historical situations where they'd like to have been a fly on the wall, quietly observing the real story of exactly what took place in those famous moments. Andrew O'Hagan's clever novel shows us we would do better to be the dog in the room, if the room belongs to Marilyn Monroe. During the last two years of her life, the American icon really did have a Scottish Maltese poodle, Mafia Honey, who was given to her by Frank Sinatra. The author transforms this companion animal into a delightfully educated and compassionate commentator on a very well-known life, and Maf becomes a deeply elegant and engaging conversationalist thanks to the talents of narrator John Keating.
Irishman Keating effuses warmth and empathy, and a good bit of humor, into Scotsman O'Hagan's respectfully intimate portrait of a classic American celebrity. Whether Maf is accompanying Marilyn to rehearsals or psychotherapy, to parties or just to the living room, the dog is equal parts thought-provoking and protective. Keating does not let one salacious vibration slip into his distinguished dog, even on the occasion of Marilyn's first meeting with President Kennedy. Although all the rough and tumble brogue is music to the ears, Keating also shines with several famous character voices. Listen especially for his terrifying and sad portrayal of Frank Sinatra throwing a macho tantrum.
Keating does a gem of a job in balancing witty treasures with the treachery of fame. O'Hagan's foreign perspective on Marilyn Monroe is a welcome departure from the persistent notions that she was a weak-willed and shallow woman who relied on her striking good looks to get by in life, instead using Maf to reveal her as an emotionally astute but unfortunately lonely lady who still has some things to prove to herself. No wonder this book has already garnered O'Hagan the Glenfiddich Writer of the Year Award.

    Members Reviews:
    Idea better than the book
What disappointed you about The Gendarme?
This story is difficult to get into and I disliked the premise of an old man, presumably dying, suddenly dream/remembering his past. I didn't like the characters and that made it difficult to care about the events and the outcome. I found the ending to be disappointing.
What could Mark Mustian have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    Developed a likable character.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I liked that the performance was innocuous - didn't distract from the story line.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Indifference.
    Any additional comments?
After reading the background on the book on Mustian's website, I understood his rationale a bit more, but I still don't feel that he met his own goal of remembering a dark episode of the past.
