    Title: The Merchant's Mark

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
The third Gil Cunningham murder mystery set in Medieval Glasgow. The barrel should have contained books - instead it held treasure and a severed head...Gil Cunningham and his old acquaintance, Glasgow merchant Augie Morison, expecting a delivery of books from the Low Countries, report the gruesome substitute to the Provost, and at the inquest the next morning Morison is accused of the murder and imprisoned.
He appeals to Gil, who sets out with his friend and future father in law Maistre Pierre, the French master-mason, to find the treasure's owner, trace the barrel and identify the dead man. The trail they follow leads them from the court of James IV at Stirling via a cooper's yard in Linlithgow, to another death on the bare slopes of the Pentland Hills.

    another good book
in this the third book of the series Gil Cunningham is not trying to find a murderer but find who the head in a barrel of brine was. the victim has distinctive eyes.
whilst he is searching for a minstrel Alys and his sister Kate are asking questions of the merchants household after he has been arrested for the murder.
Another very good story by Pat McIntosh and well performed by Andrew Watson whose soft Scottish accent adds so much to the book.
recommended if you like historical crime fiction. t These books do need to be read in order. Book one The Harpers Quine, Book two The Nicholas feast
    Well written tale. Well read.
I have several of the books in this series as audio books and I find the narrator Andrew Watson beautifully captures the Scots accent while at the same time making the words perfectly clear and understandable. He reads with feeling giving each character a persona.
The story itself is complicated which I personally find interesting. There is action. The description of the chase on the scaffolding I found particularly atmospheric. There is also humour and good descriptions of life as it was lived on a daily basis in Scotland at the time in which the story is set. The author has clearly done his research. The main characters are well formed and the lead Gil Cunningham a very likeable hero. Of course I am not going to give away the plot but the ending is satisfying.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a detective tale set in a past time.

A very interesting historical novel about an immigrant doctor to the US during the era of the Civil War
Noah Gordon has written at least two books about the Doctors Cole. "Der Medicus" was the first one. He seems to base their knowledge of medicine to fit the era in which they were living. I love how he weaves the story line into the historical events of the time. I have this book twice, "Der Medicus" three times. There is always something new to learn, enjoy, think about, which is my way of rating a book that I like.
    Spitzenbuch

A bit slow at the start. picked up well
a very involov ed d story. The begining was very slow. From WW1 onwards quite good.
    Excellent
Congratulations Judy Nunn on writing an excellent historical novel on this wonderful country...this novel should be used as a high school examination novel....it portrays the highs and lows of family life intertwined with many of the major events that Australia has endured over the last 220 years....i was always worried about Hannah's diary and whether it would last to tell the tale....i would be interested to know if the diary and story was based on a real diary....well done...it was riveting and totally enjoyable....recommend to anyone looking for a good read or history lesson on Australia....thank you
    Good story, shame about cursing.
The story is very interesting and clever. At times not put 'downable', but it lacks the class of a prize-winner.
It weaves Australian (particularly Sydney) history into a family saga.
Blasphemy may well reflect parts of society, yet authors need not succumb to it. They demonstrate disdain for some readers, by ignoring their concern over cursing and swearing. That part gives a 'good' novel a bogan feel.
The narration was really good apart from the American whine and Otto's Dutch.
If narrators cannot imitate expertly, it is best left in their own tongue.
    First rate
a great story with a somewhat frustrating ending. but still 10/10!
more work needs to be done on accents though by the narrator.
A wonderful journey through Sydney's history
What made the experience of listening to Beneath the Southern Cross the most enjoyable?
This was a wonderful inter generational story from convict arrival to present time which took me, a lover of genealogy, along the journey to follow the Kendall's family tree. I loved how the beginning also becomes the end.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Beneath the Southern Cross?
    Where do I start.
    * Listening to Sydney develop.... From the beginning to now.... Judy & Richard took me there.
    * I loved Arty's ability to 'guide' Kitty to who she became
Have you listened to any of Richard Aspels other performances? How does this one compare?
This is the first and I will certainly find more
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Many were displeased with the peace King Richard of England brokered in the Holy Land, and his return from the Crusades wasnt greeted with cheers, but rather shackles. Now a guest of the Holy Roman Emperor, the Lion-Hearted is being held for an exorbitant ransomso much money that it seems unlikely that the silver will make its way from Britain to Germany.
For converging on the caravan are a number of groups with very different motives: French troops who want the silver to continue their war with the English, mercenaries intent on causing chaos, English longbow men looking to protect their countrys future, and Shield-Brethren hoping to ensure King Richards freedom.
With a surprising cast of characters, The Lion in Chains is a Foreworld SideQuest that illuminates a decisive moment in European history in an unexpected way, revealing another secret in the long-reaching narrative of the Shield-Brethren.

A slightly different picture of Richard and Robin
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Usual portrait of that time period shows Robin Hood vs Prince John, nothing much is said about Richard except he's a bigger than life figure, gone crusading or missing while on crusade, only vague rumors are coming back. Now it's nice to flesh out a picture of Richard with his greatness AND flaws, and discover where Robin was and why he came back to England. And it surely explains his later anger at how the poor soldiers were treated by the nobility and his actions when he gets back and into the well-known conflict between Prince John (and the Sherriff)...but that's another story.
a must for followers of the foreworld saga!
Anchored by the real event of king Richard's (the Lionheart) imprisonment as he returned from the Crusades by the holy roman emperor, this novella provides an introduction to one of the key characters and organizations followed in the three books of the Mongoliad. While this novella can stand on it's own narrative merits it serves best as a prequel to the Mongoliad.
    Superior Fiction
Thoroughly enjoyable read. Quality prose, compelling weaving of history and imagination, with seamless incorporation of unique characters and literary license to bring all the elements together. Looking forward to further installments impatiently. Get to work Teppo!
    Waiting on the next book!
Good read. Alloftheshort stories in the series delve deeper into individual characters, and this makes the main story even more enjoyable!
A required read for The Foreworld Saga readers.
This short novel will answer some questions that arise to the reader of The Foreworld Saga series and adds a nice story within itself.

    Language: English

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In the aftermath of a critical World War II battle, Father Gaetano is assigned as the sole priest at the Church of San Domenico in the small seaside Sicilian village of Tringale. The previous pastor has died and there is a shortage of clergy at the moment, so until another can be spared, the young priest must say all of the masses himself.
Mass is not Father Gaetanos only responsibility, however. The war has created many orphans, and thus the San Domenico rectory has been converted into an orphanage that is also his domain. The children are a joy to him, but they have lost so much, many have begun to question their faith and their God, and his attempts to teach them catechism are in vain...until he finds an old puppet theater and an ornate box of puppets in the basement.
Handcrafted by the buildings former caretaker, now absent, the puppets seem the perfect tool to get the children to pay attention to their lessons. But after dark the puppets emerge from that ornate box, without their strings. Whereas the children have been questioning their faith, the puppets believe Father Gaetanos Bible stories completely. Yet there is such a thing as too much faith. And the childrens lives will never be the same again.

    Not recommended
This was a short book; the title itself names it as a novella. For me, short books need to have a tight story line. I believe that a book loses its cohesiveness when multiple arcs are brought into play. I think that this was a flaw in FGPC. On the one hand this is a book about puppets that come to life after dark and on the other it is quite, I believe, tangentially about Father Gaetanos temptation with a nun in the story. Was there a connection? I never found one.
I thought there were parts of the book that were marvelously written but the majority was rather dry. Was the book just too short to support these multiple arcs? Frankly, I think that it was just too long and unimaginative to hold my interest.
    Playing God
I am a long time fan of Hellboy, but I was hesitant to follow Mike Mignola away from comics. However, Im pleased to report that one of my favorite artists remains great regardless of the medium. Taking the plunge into this was a very rewarding experience and I will certainly be continuing on the Mignola and Goldens next collaboration, Joe Golem and the Drowned City, as my next read.
In this story, Mignola and Golden have crafted a deeply moving, and surprisingly scary, tale about a kind hearted priest struggling to preach the Catholic faith to war orphans in the midst of WW2 Sicily. Because this is a very short read I cant delve into further details, but the payoff at the end packs one hell of a punch (pun totally intended). The narration is nothing special, but it gets the message across and certainly comes to life near the end (another pun youll understand later on). Very highly recommended!

Steampunk meets B grade action feature
Narration: Doctor Watson's narrator fits the role but Holme's narrator I felt did not. Overall the narration was good
It is the Arthur Conan Doyle 1912 story "The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans" with some of the names/genders changed and the Bruce-Partington submarine, changed to the Nautilus. In places especially in the first half it's almost word for word from the original 1912 story.
The first half reads like a Holmes story the second half reads like some B grade action movie with the bionic man thrown in for good measure. Holmes conclusions are lifted straight from the original story by Arthur Conan Doyle.
I my opinion this Book will not appeal to people looking for an Arthur Conan Doyle Holmes alternative story, nor is this book really steam punk.
    nice idea, poor execution
Sherlock is in vogue big time, and has always had authors writing pastiches etc., but few seem to get it right, and for me this one didn't. The steam-punk angle was of interest, but ultimately disappointing. And it's apparent that this is intended to be the beginning of a series, which I will not go on with. the voice of Sherlock was rather uninspired also. Dibdin's Last Sherlock Holmes Story is still one of the best; A Slight Trick of the Mind was excellent as well; and I hold high hopes for Gardner's Return of Moriarty. But this one I can not recommend. Portions of it are simply a rehash of the Bruce Partington Plans I believe.
    Excellent work
I enjoyed this entirely the differences in the characters were believable and well integrated. Overall the story was excellent and very well written. The narration was very well done as well.
Excellent reimagining of an old favourite
Interesting choice to make Mycroft female. Thoroughly enjoyable short story which gives easy access into the world of steampunk for anyone wanting a peek.

Great Insight Into The Amish Life
This book is about a person that I knew. It gives an accurate picture of the Amish culture as it exists in the heartland. Especially interesting are the fairly detailed descriptions of some of the customs and rituals of the Amish faith, as well as a vivid picture of daily life. It is well worth reading, if only for the clearer understanding it provides of Amish society as it existed and evolved during the twentieth century. Tobe was an interesting and talented person whose life touched many people, both positively and negatively. Though the writing style, occasionally slipping into "first person" to relate events that occured long ago, may leave something to be desired, it is an interesting and information-filled book.
    Four Stars
Good book, Tobias was ambitious but did not succeed as he had too many irons in the fire.

This book is written by my uncles nephew and has some information about my family. It is a true story
    Tobais of the Amish
My parents were both raised Amish, I was not. In recent years I've become interested in the Amish. Why do they do things... I've read several other books about how the Amish Church came into being and its evolution. This book does not address those types of things.
In reading about Tobias' life there are allot of little things that I've never thought about that were filled in for me. For example, in one part of the book the author talks about how the Amish do not sing their hymns in parts because that is thought to be prideful. I have been to Amish gatherings before (mostly funerals for relatives) and I have noticed that they do not sing in parts but I never would have thought that they thought singing in parts was prideful.
The book seems to be an honest straight forward tale of Tobais' life. The book is written by his sone who was three when he lost his father.
If you're interested, as I am, in learning the reasons why the Amish do the things that they do you will find this book helpful.
    Five Stars

Rapid Degeneration into Imperial Soap Drama
This novel had all the makings of a great wilderness (man and woman against nature) all-night listen. Two British "transported convicts" escape tyrannical imprisonment in the 18th Century prison colony of Australia's New South Wales, but they hightail into aboriginal wilderness.
    So far so goodright?
Then, fortunes change for the two star-crossed escaped-cons and they re-emerge into Sydney Society as a couple of out-ot-place, very well-to-do frauds. The novel degenerates from there into tension between the haves and have-nots. The author unsuccessfully attempts to keep the tension going by reintroducing a nemesis, however it's trite and campy, like a bad script for a "B" grade Aussie made-for-TV movie.
There is some great historical fiction in this listen, however, if you have read other Australian Historical Fiction (or seen the fine films from that continent), this novel may leave you wanting to put up a long Rabbit Proof Fence between you and this novel. It's a good journey, but not Dreamtime drama.
I give this novel one boomerang up and one musket down.
    Rugged and wonderful
What was one of the most memorable moments of Clancy's Crossing?
The birth of Caroline... the differing reactions of Eliza and the Aborigines
Have you listened to any of Richard Aspels other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. I listening to him in "Batavia" and "Can't buy me Love." This book is by far and away better than both! It was a masterful performance, with accents, great inflections, and NONE of the pauses that made those other two books so frustrating.
    Any additional comments?
I normally don't like this type of genre, and I was a bit wary of listening to Aspel after my disappointment with his reading of "Can't Buy me Love"... I am glad I read this. it is a rugged bush story, with all of the elements of an American wild-west story: gold prospecting, conflicts with Natives, old sensibilities confronting new exploration. I normally don't like books where I don't, on some level, like the protagonist's, but I can understand Clancy's motivations, Eliza's frustration as a wife, and the natives' hospitality and confusion regarding the white people in their midst.
This is a fantastic book, performed admirably.

The year is 1967. Gin Mitchell knows a better life awaits her when she marries Mason McPhee. But nothing can prepare her for the world she and Mason step into when he takes a job with the Arabian American Oil company in Saudi Arabia.

Even among the veiled women and strict laws, Gin's life has become the stuff of fairy tales. But when a young Bedouin woman is found dead, washed up on the shores of the Persian Gulf, Gin's world closes in around her, and the one person she trusts is nowhere to be found.

    Members Reviews:
    Interesting but disappointing end
(Warning: spoilers) The writing was excellent and the characters were fairly well developed but the book disappointed me. I realize that life doesn't always finish every human situation with tidy little endings but it seemed like every single aspect of this story was left unresolved. We'll never know what really happened to Mason or to the Indian houseboy, Yosh, who you come to adore. You never even know what happens to Gin in the long run. The reader leaves her mouldering away, depressed, in an apartment in Rome (or was it Venice?.) Too bad because the story was gripping and at some points I couldn't put the book down. I realize now that I could have put it down at any point and gone away with as much a feeling of completion as I had at the end. Yes, some, or maybe even most, people's stories have incomplete endings, but are they worth writing a book about? All I can think is that this story was supposed to leave the reader with a hint at the shadiness of the oil industry. If so, it succeeds, but I think most of us were already aware of this. All I can say is I hope she writes a sequel.
good foundation for a compelling novel
I found the topic and characters interesting, fairly developed but lacked depth. The audio version was easy to listen to while walking.
