Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Decent story. Narrator not so. She read her narratives as if there. were. periods. after. every. word. Some. times. hard. to. follow. her. speaking. parts

Awful narrator!

I have had the hardest time trying to listen to this book! The narrators consistent halting speech pattern & inability to successfully alter her speech as a voice actor should be able to do has made this book completely un-enjoyable! I will remember her name and not purchase another she does. I LOVE these stories and am sad to give my only poor review.

Brings an already captivating story to life

What did you love best about Nobody's Slave?

I love that this novel turns the concept of slavery on its head. It forces readers to question how slavery comes about and to what degree it defines those who are enslaved. For students, I appreciate the complexity of two stories becoming one. It is a technique that not many novels for your people use.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Madu was definitely the most intriguing character. His dignity, fear, naivety, and strength were inspiring.

Which character as performed by Tim Vicary was your favorite?

I most appreciated the narration of the settings. It brings Madu and Tom's world to life, especially for young listeners.

Any additional comments?

I offered this novel as a choice for my 9th grade students in our historical fiction unit, and I am so glad I did. Students were engaged and intrigued and learned tremendous amounts about the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade as well as universal themes. I can't wait to teach it again next year!

Excellent narration

Though hard to listen to as far as all the cruelty, especially to the captured slaves, it is historically accurate. The author has an easy voice to listen to and tells the story well. The creative license he took with some parts only made it that much more interesting.

Not a bad story.

It took a while for me it get into this story and begin to care at all about the characters. The second half is a bit better. If you are interested in (and/or knowledgeable about) the history of that time frame, it would probably be quite interesting as most of the major facts are historically accurate. The narration was very good.

Hades in Gaul

Although our recent wars produced more casualties than theses campaigns inn the first be, the percentage of the peoples decimated (which means one in ten) or extinguished leaves a heavy heart. To bear it is the way of life of this world. Where I sit, four hundred years ago in "king Philip''s War, 90 percent of every man woman and child died of disease, violence or starvation. Ancient Gaul and Belgium were not unlike the area and the manner in which the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay colonies fought it out with the Abebenaki, Nipmuck , Narragansett and allied tribes.

Yet we think the Romans cruel and think of our earliest founding fathers as somewhat weirdly dressed but enlightened people. Rome., at least, had been attacked and sacked buy Gallic peoples moving west. The Legion was a Gaul killing machine invented by Camilus, improved buy Markus and wielded expertly by Caesar.

This book puts people we don't understand as well as we should.

Interesting Story!

How refreshing to read/listen to such an riveting & interesting story. I've been so bored with the Dan Brown wannabe books that when I came across this story, I was poised to purchase. It was not a let down; in fact, I look forward to listen to the next Lucius Domitius adventure. Thank you, R. Cameron Cooke. I would have read the book if audio was unavailable, but Tim Campbell's narration kept the story interesting as well. Great team!

Poor Daisy...

Daisy was probably the most lovable of all the characters in this series. I wish I could give this a higher rating; had I read it on my own I probably would have given it a higher rating but again, Stevie Zimmerman provided this character, the damsel in distress, a grating voice. Stevie did the same for Lady Aimée de Bourbon. She stars in the second volume of this series. In that series, I thought that Stevie didn't really care for that character hence her decision to provide her with an overly obnoxious tone of voice, but that was the same tone of voice she provided Daisy. I dearly wish she'd decided differently.

Set aside the narration, the plot line was much improved from the second volume. It had such heart. I definitely recommend this book to any fan of Jane Austen.

A Heartfelt Tale

In "Lum" Libby Ware has woven a heartfelt tale to remind us that we are all different, but some are more different than others. Columbia (Lum), growing up during the depression in The Blue Ridge Mountains, is told at an early age she will never marry because she is born of both sexes. Holding the positive qualities of both she is shuttled back and forth between her family members and is a fascinating, courageous and lovable character that I will always remember. The beautiful Appalachian descriptions made me want to stomp on the fall leaves beside her.

Lum, a wonderful book.

Lum is a melancholy book that reminded me of A Giantâs House by Elizabeth McCracken. As an intersex female born in the south at the turn of the century, Lum must keep a low profile in her small community to avoid being scrutinized and bullied more than sheâs already been. Though she works hard caring for babies and cooking for her familyâs children, her value to others is minimized nil given that she wonât be marrying and making babies. Lum is a beautifully written and captivating story of the important need in all of us to be loved and to belong.

A beautiful novel that could only haver been written today.....

I finished reading Lum the first time. I need to read it again, as I very much enjoyed this story of a sensitive person trying to find a place in the world, and though your language is simple, I feel there are complexities I may have missed. I love the depiction of the beginnings of the Blue RIdge Parkway, a fascinating area of the country, with its baby mountains.

Enjoyable book. It wasn't a hard read, but the depth of main character fascinated me. I loved the feeling of the sense of that time in history and of the beautiful place where the story was set.

Great new take on the spy genre

I have to echo a reviewer in the U.K. and say I'm getting hooked on this series. This is the second of three I've read and I'm looking forward to the third. The author is the wife of the WW2 spy novelist, Philip Kerr, who I've read and enjoyed, but I'm enjoying these more. There needs to be name for this genre and I think it would be a Cozy Spy book: it has the features we all understand from cozy murders, yet with the political/historical elements one finds in spy novels. I can't go all out with 5 stars because of this and that, but it's definitely very enjoyable listening.

As good as the previous ones

I'm hooked on this author and these books. Can't stop listening. The mix of historical fact and fiction tells the tale of pre war Berlin beautifully. Can't recommend highly enough.

This series is a delight.

The Clara Vine series of audiobooks are the best audibooks I have ever listened to.

What did you like best about this story?

I particularly liked this kind of historical fiction. Thynne builds this series of novels around historical facts and appears to do so with integrity. The Clara Vine novels bring the harsh realities of living in pre-war Berlin in a way that no other author does.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Clara Vine is a particularly interesting and intriguing character.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I had to stop myself from fininishing it in one sitting, to draw out the pleasure.

Great series

Gaining some understanding of Germany and war. Second of the series for me, I'm compelled to read them all. History and real people bound intricately together.

Great condition

I loved this. I wish there were more Quilts of ...

I loved this. I wish there were more Quilts of Love series to read. All so different, but so interesting.

Must read

Another great book in the Quilts of Love series, have already passed it on to peopel in my quilt glass.

Felt Choppy and Abrupt

Although I've loved some of the Quilts of Love Books that I've had the opportunity to read, A Stitch and a Prayer was not one of my favorite.

The setting was an an interesting one- Oregon in the days of the pioneers. The story line had the potential to be pretty interesting also- a new bride whose husband mysteriously leaves with the promise he will return but no details about where he has gone. The author lives in Oregon, and the story is roughly an account her ancestors experience as pioneers in the West.

However the story was very difficult to figure out. I kept thinking I must have missed some other book or something at the beginning, but as far as I know this isn't a sequel. It's a stand alone book. The action was very confusing.

The conversations were very stilted and didn't seem to flow well. There wasn't too much of the characters' thoughts and feelings either. So I think this contributed to the choppy flow of conversations. When the characters acted and conversed, we didn't really know what to expect because we hadn't been privy to what they were thinking. So conversations seemed abrupt.

Although the setting and story had potential, I just couldn't like this one. I give it three stars and a G rating for content.

Meh, just not for me. Florence is far too needy

You know, I just couldn't get into this book. I tried, I really did. The main character, Florenceâoi, that woman came off so needy and whiny.

I literally read all of her dialogue in a pouty, baby voice. I understand that she was pregnant, alone, and dealing with a medical condition but she came off more like a young child.

The constant stuttering to denote moments of weakness happened far too often for my liking as well.

I honestly thought this book would have a bit of pioneer spirit. I just didnât find it in this book.

Great, if you like this kind of topic

I have to give this book four stars because it was well written and a good story, but unfortunately I didn't really enjoy it. That isn't the author's fault, however. It's because this book reads like an historical fiction romance, not a supernatural ghost story like I wanted.

A caution to those expecting this to be a creepy ghost story; nothing is creepy about this book and the ghostly elements in it are scarce. The book has a great twist but one I saw coming a mile away and didn't make up for the boredom I experienced waiting for the ghostly portion of this book to emerge.

It is a great story for those interested in a historical fiction romance vibe, set against a war backdrop and peppered with political statements (all of which bore me to tears in fiction) but will probably disappoint those looking for a supernatural thriller (like I was) such as those by Wendy Webb, John Harwood, and F.G. Cottam.

The narrator annoyed me to no end, but unfortunately I also have no objective reason to give for it. I simply didn't enjoy her voice or style but see no reason why others might not.

I highly recommend this book, I went into this book blind, Not even reading a review. It opend my eyes and my heart it made me think about how I see and treat people.

Good story, narration not great

Where does Rondo Allegro rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I liked the story. It's above average, good story line. It was interesting enough for me to keep going to find out the HEA.

Any additional comments?

The narration esp the part of Anna's maid was overly done, too 'foreign' to understand what the narrator was saying. I had to go over same lines again and again. So frustrating. Just keep it in simple in easy-to-understand English with slight accent would do!

A good story ruined - beware

What disappointed you about Rondo Allegro?

Fenella Fudge uses an overwrought Italian accent for the heroine that makes listening to this unbearable for me. I tried speeding the narration up to see if it would be listenable and it helped but not enough. I really dislike narrators/producers who think they are putting on a play or making a film instead of providing an enjoyable but unobtrusive reading of a book. It is too bad because this is book worth being well read. Get the print version!
