    Language: English
    Release date: 09-15-16
    Publisher: Oasis Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Forty-year-old Sandy Richards is a successful music teacher, wife, and mother living a comfortable middle-class life in a small Midwestern town. But behind her warm smile and easy laugh is a heavy burden she cannot release.
During her childhood, Sandy (or "Shadow" as just about everyone knew her) was inseparable from her larger-than-life father, a World War II hero she adored. Sandy followed him everywhere, hung on his every word, and loved him with all her heart as only a young child can. It was more difficult to love him at some times than at others, especially when he was there and then he was gone - right in front of her eyes without ever leaving the house.
For reasons she would not fully understand until many years later, something went horribly wrong and their relationship fractured, seemingly forever, when her father died of lung cancer on one long, hot summer evening. His passing left Shadow alone to "sort through his warehouse of junk," an old storage facility jammed with emotions so overwhelming they balanced her on the edge of suicide. Then, when and where she needed him most, a stranger entered her life. And everything changed once more.
The Final Service offers a riveting story about human nature, emotional abandonment, and how unfulfilled dreams left a middle-aged woman on the brink of personal destruction until one event forever altered the core of her belief system and her life. It is a story of faith, family, and forgiveness, and the realization that forces larger and more powerful than ourselves are at work in our lives in ways we are unable to fully understand.

Where does The Final Service rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
At the absolute top of my book ranking...
What other book might you compare The Final Service to and why?
"Playing with the Enemy" also reached my heart and stirred so many emotions...
Which character as performed by Pamela Klein was your favorite?
    Sandy Richards the main character...
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Almost all of my emotions were in play...the book left me deeply in thought about my own relatives who I now recognise impacted me more than I can even know. The people of the depression-WW2 era survived and I am not often reminded of the attributes they shared of which I am so thankful.
    Any additional comments?
Mr Moore is a very perceptive author who uses his gift to help all of understand the people in our lives who we may have misunderstood. He brings us to recognise that our parents/grandparents were so much like us but why we may not have understood why we are so much indebted to them...Thank you again Mr. Moore for opening my eyes even more... about those members of my own family who were of the greatest generation!

    Publisher's Summary:
For Americans in the early 19th century, the uncharted western frontier signified both great opportunity and grave danger. Bold pioneers left the civilized Eastern Seaboard in droves, seeking riches and reinvention. Trekking across the continent's vast plains and rivers, they faced the threat of disease, wild animals, and violence from Native Americans who resented this invasion into their land. In this stunningly dynamic novel, author Cameron Judd portrays one such perilous journey down the Ohio River through the eyes of 16-year-old Celinda Ames. This enthralling narrative leads up to the earthquake of 1811 that jolted the Midwest, upended the region's budding civilizations, and changed the course of migration to the West. With an unflinching eye, Judd evokes the dangers of the frontier with vivid clarity.

An emotionally well penned reminiscence story
Ashley Fontainne does not disappoint in this short but well written story of a man who reminiscences through his life and is surprised at what he finds during his journey. I was not sure how I would enjoy this somewhat oddly named book at first glance, however taking the journey alone with the main character was one I enjoyed. As the story moves, you begin to understand what made him who he was along with the many points of pain and suffering he faced growing up.
Spending many summer months on a farm in the southern United States at my Memaws house, I could relate to the story in more ways than one. Ashley tells an excellent story in a rather brief number of pages, but I do not regret taking the journey with Marvin and learning about his life. If you are looking for a light-hearted story that takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride, I would recommend reading or listening to this book.
With regard to the audiobook narration, I have to say it is also up there with many of my other favorites. This is the first I have listened to any material by Homer V Jones, but I think he hit a homerun reading this book. At first I was unsure if I was going to enjoy his voice or not, but by the end of the book I have to say that I would see and hear Marvin in no other way. Jones is able to capture the character's inflections, expected voice, and even the accent I would expect from this man.
Thank you Ashley for creating it and Homer for bring it to life in audio form.
This book was provided to the reviewer by the Author, Narrator, or publisher in exchange for a non-bias review.
Fantastic story and very good narration
At 30 pages this is a really fast, easy read. What made it a little difficult for me is the fact that my grandmother is going through the same issues that the main character is; losing their mind and trying like hell to keep it.
Ashley Fontainne writes this in such a way that the reader takes the journey with Marvin as he remembers his life and is journeying one last time to his childhood home. It is a bit of an emotional roller coaster but somehow still manages to find the happiness out of every moment in Marvin's life.
The characterization of Marvin and his lifelong friends and family really take center stage but you can also tell that Ashley either lives in the south or has a great deal of knowledge about it. She brought the south to life and Homer V Jones is able to put a voice to it.
Fantastic story and very good narration. I love Homer's voice.

    Title: Signs for Lost Children
    Author: Sarah Moss
    Narrator: Merield Scholfield
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-18-16
    Publisher: Oakhill Publishing
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Only weeks into their marriage, a young couple embark on a six-month period of separation. Tom Cavendish goes to Japan to build lighthouses, and his wife, Ally, a doctor, begins her work at the Truro asylum. As the couple navigate their separate professional trials, the foundations of their marriage begin to slip.
An exquisite novel of the 1880s told in alternating parts: two maps of absence - two distinct but conjoined portraits of loneliness and determination.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sarah Moss is one of our country's most underrated writers.... Ally is one of the most memorable heroines of recent fiction. These books scream TV drama. You'll have forgotten Poldark and Outlander in no time. If there is one author you take a chance on this year, let it be her - it's time, and money, well spent." (The Times)
"Ally's torment is sympathetically rendered and is skilfully counterbalanced by Moss's sensual and beguiling descriptions of Japan." (Daily Mail)
"A quietly devastating portrait.... Moss is an effortlessly elegant writer and [Signs for Lost Children] is a compelling, often harrowing, occasionally heartbreaking read. It seems to me, with this book, that it's no longer sufficient to call what Moss is doing 'novel-writing'. Taken together, these three books constitute an ongoing interrogation of the role of women within the family, and in the wider world, and it's a broader, knottier enterprise than the word novel allows. A project, perhaps you could call it, of the lifelong variety. An undertaking." (Guardian)
"As with Bodies of Light, the richness of Moss's work is astonishing. Few writers demonstrate such quietly magisterial command of the rocky territories of both the heart and mind." (Independent)
"Moss captures Japan in the 1880s with chromatic elegance [and] lyrical descriptions. Signs for Lost Children [is] a rich and intricate novel." (Sunday Times)
"Heartfelt.... This wonderful, subtle novel picks up the strands of the story Sarah Moss began in Bodies of Light. This [is a] fine novel." (Sunday Express)
    Members Reviews:
Exploration of doors and chambers of heart & mind
Signs of Lost Children follows on from Moss's Bodies of Light, but is also stand-alone. It's an immensely sophisticated, interesting and different novel. It's such an intelligent and earnest work that it seems mean not to give it straight 5s, but it does have some imperfections.
Set in the 1880s, Ally and Tom are separated by their work just weeks after their marriage. Tom travels to Japan to build lighthouses and Ally, a qualified doctor, begins work at Truro asylum. Immediately we know this is no ordinary nineteenth century couple, and this is no ordinary novel! The main body of the story is taken up alternating between Tom in Japan and Ally in England, but I found the best part was very much towards the end when they come together again after 6 months and their apartness is almost impossible to bridge. The very end is the only glimmer of what you might expect from a nineteenth century novel...
Moss is a beautiful writer, as sensitive and delicate when describing the filigree of leaves in a Japanese garden, the fineness of Japanese embroideries; the indignities of female inmates of the madhouse, the wildness of the Cornish coast, and most of all, the intricacies of the heart and mind.

    Publisher's Summary:
Two half-sisters, one black and one white, embark on a risky road trip through the Jim Crow South of the 1950s in this spellbinding story of identity and race.
Self-educated and brown skinned, Cassie works full time in her grandmother's laundry in rural Mississippi. Illiterate and white, Judith falls for "colored music" and dreams of life as a big-city radio star. These teenage girls are half-sisters. And when they catch wind of their wayward father's inheritance coming down in Virginia, they hitch their hopes on a road trip together to claim what's rightly theirs.
In an old junk car, with a frying pan, a ham, and a few dollars hidden in a shoe, they set off through the Deep South of the 1950s, a bewitchingly beautiful landscape as well as one bedeviled by racial strife and violence. Suzanne Feldman's Absalom's Daughters combines the buddy movie, the coming-of-age tale, and a dash of magical realism to enthrall and move us with an unforgettable, illuminating novel.
    Members Reviews:
... Feldman's writing for some time now after falling in love with her science-fiction work under the pen name Severna ...
I've followed Suzanne Feldman's writing for some time now after falling in love with her science-fiction work under the pen name Severna Park. I think she is a tremendously gifted author, and I'm pleased to say that I believe Absalom's Daughters is her best work to date.
The book is perhaps best described as a travel adventure set in the segregated south. It focuses predominantly on the protagonist Cassie and her half-sister Judith. While they share a father, Cassie was raised in an all-black household with her mother and grandmother, while Judith is a white girl from a white family. They eventually become companions on an epic road trip from Heron Neck, Mississipi to Virginia and beyond, searching for fame and fortune. While they encounter difficulties on their travels, the book retains a hopeful tone, as both girls seek something more than the small town they were raised in.
Feldman's writing style is superb, with gentle rhythm that is comfortable to read without feeling plain. Most notably she captures the speaking styles of her characters so perfectly in written word that you can tell if a character is young, old, white, black, educated, etc purely by their mode of speech. Ranging from folksie drawl to Judith's frequent colorful curses the words are often written phonetically to match the speech pattern of the character and I found myself reading many lines out loud simply for the joy of speaking in their voice. This is a rare gift to be able to capture so perfectly and worth 5 stars alone in my humble opinion.
Also of note is given the racially divided era the book takes place in, it's handled both with great care and yet unapologetically faithful. The most important element of the book to me however was the characters themselves. They all seem so full formed and three-dimensional. Although Cassie is the protagonist, I found myself drawn even more to Judith.

War Stories with a Bit of Embellishment
    **
I was gripped by this book from the opening story! It begins with a father teaching his son how to fly a plane. Before they know it they are unknowingly in on the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It was exhilarating!
While I didn't find the rest of the stories as gripping, they were interesting and seemed embellished facts.
John Pirhalla is a very strong narrator and he performed all very well.
If you are the least bit interested in tidbits about 20th-century war wars and conflicts I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy this book

Well written fiction based on real stories. The author gives you the shirt but if fiction and then the story. Whims what was written. Well written and narrated. I found the shorts entertaining. Title: Nor Will He Sleep
Subtitle: An Inspector McLevy Mystery 4

    Narrator: David Ashton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-30-16
    Publisher: Two Roads
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
London had Sherlock Holmes. The dark alleys of Edinburgh had Inspector McLevy.
Known as the father of forensics and a likely influence on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, real-life police inspector James McLevy is here reinvented by David Ashton in a thrilling mystery - the fourth in a series - set in dark, violent Victorian Edinburgh.
It's 1887. The streets of Edinburgh seethe with anarchy as two gangs of students rival each other in wild exploits. After a pitched battle between them, an old woman is found savagely battered to death in Leith Harbour. Enter the Thieftaker - Inspector James McLevy. With Constable Mulholland at his side, he scours the low dives of the waterfront and then sees the tendrils of the case spread to more respectable nooks and crannies.
When the inspector encounters Robert Louis Stevenson, author of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, in the city to bury his deceased father, the two recognise each other as fellow travellers, observers of the dark side of human nature, and hopeless insomniacs.
Glimpses of the murderer indicate a slender, androgynous figure with a silver cane, which is used to lethal effect. A dancing killer not unlike Mr Edward Hyde.
    Critic Reviews:
"David Ashton impeccably evokes Edinburgh." (Financial Times)
    "Elegant and convincing." (The Times)
"Ashton is the direct heir to Robert Louis Stevenson." (Brian Cox)
    "Excellent." (The Sherlock Holmes Society)
    "A real page-turner." (Sunday Post)
"Dripping with melodrama and derring-do." (Herald)
    Members Reviews:
An excellent addition to the series
McLevy reveals a bit more of himself in each episode. The use of well known personalities to set off the plot is nicely done and has led more than once to further research. I know some listeners have problems with the narration, they take me back to radio dramas of my childhood and I love it.
such slow narration .totally ruined it
I love the David Ashton radio 4 plays with Brian Cox but he has ruined this book for me by reading it himself. He ought to stick to writing. The narration is so important and his snail's pace delivery was irritating and tedious. It might well be a good story if read by an actor but I wouldn't recommend it. Listen to the sample first at any rate....well at a slow rate!!!
    Nor Will He Sleep
Where does Nor Will He Sleep rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
A very good story full of atmosphere.
But the narration is ponderous and becomes a little irritating over time.
However it is a rattling good yarn
    Not for me
I tried but after the first 5 chapters I reluctantly gave up., partly because the story if there was one bored me silly along with the droning interpretation of the narrator and author Mr Ashton.
I'm sorry this is such a downbeat review and it is the first one that I have not liked although I am also having trouble with another series which if that doesn.t improve will also be getting an adverse review from me
Another great tale from David Ashton
Loved this story, lots of twists and turns. performance by Ashton is superb, although maybe an acquired taste for some people as it is much more of a one man show than a reading of the book.

A Horse Fiction Book for Adults
Racism can linger in the strangest of places. Sometimes, even within yourself.
For Clara Lacroix, the past was the place she chose to dwell. That's where her memories of Boone, and the life they shared, resided.
But for Joe Black Hawk, the past was a painful mix of a fading heritage he didn't want to lose, and a string of mistakes he'd just as soon forget.
Spanning thousands of acres across the Sandhills of Nebraska, Crossroads Ranch operates as a mustang training facility and equine-assisted psychotherapy practice.
Here, in the beautifully rugged grasslands over which the Lakota Sioux once roamed freely, the lives of fifth-generation rancher, Clara LaCroix, and fifth-generation reservation Indian, Joe Black Hawk, collide in a tragic event that fuels an eruption of racial bitterness.
As each struggle to cope with their own personal loss, both must learn to navigate the present with tolerance and, ultimately, forgiveness in order to reconcile with the past and one another.
As the first novel to portray the process and effects of equine-assisted psychotherapy, No Dogs or Indians is the story about the importance of history, the relevance of ancestry, and the critical balance between remembering the roots that set us apart while celebrating the humanity that binds us together.
    Members Reviews:
    Ambitious mixture of themes
The characters in this book are dealing with a lot of different issues: dealing with grief, anger and hatred, racial stereotypes, using horses in therapy, the juvenile justice system, the plight of the wild mustangs, the treatment the Indian nations have received over the years, reservations, native religious beliefs, recovery from drug and alcohol abuse... What's interesting is the way the issues are interrelated. This could have been a really bleak story, but there are glimmers of hope. Change is possible, it just isn't necessarily easy.
The narrator did a wonderful job of differentiating the various characters. I was never confused about who was speaking.
    No Dogs or Indians
    No Dogs or Indians
    : Lisa Hare
A book that peels back the layers of human emotions all the way, to show the listener how ugly attitudes can be even if you think you are a good person. Stereotyping another ethnic group because of actions of some is shown and how unfair it can be. When a person tries to break the cyclical effects of addiction and abuse is scoffed at, it is sad.
Wild Mustangs that are rounded up and taken to a preserve "for their own good," show the plight of certain ethnic groups.
The setting is beautifully portrayed. When the Badlands are described, I felt transported back home, having spent the first eleven years of my life just over the state line in Wyoming.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. I loved Portia's voice, she sounded just like I think her character would sound.
    I highly recommend this audiobook!!!!!!

    Worth a Listen!
Would you consider the audio edition of No Dogs or Indians to be better than the print version?
I did not read the print version. I only listened to the audio book.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the fact that the author looked at the cold harsh fact of racism, sexism, and ageism.
