Résumé de l'éditeur:

Vallée-du-Richelieu, hiver 1905.

Historical Predjudices

This was a great story. I loved the characters and their growth in the story. The story gave an idea of what the American-Japanese went through after Pearl Habor happened. The story was engaging and kept me interested. One thing that bothered me was the narrator sounded more like a newscaster in his presentation. I felt like some of the story was left hanging. I wanted to hear more and find out what happened to some of the characters. Hearing the different points of view during WW2 added to the story. Overall, I highly recommend this audiobook anyone wanting to learn more about the Japanese during the second World War.

Publisher's Summary:

Forty-eight years before women were granted the right to vote, one woman dared to run for president of the United States, yet her name has been virtually written out of the history books.

Rising from the shame of an abusive childhood, Victoria Woodhull, the daughter of a con-man and a religious zealot, vows to follow her destiny, one the spirits say will lead her out of poverty to "become ruler of her people".

But the road to glory is far from easy. A nightmarish marriage teaches Victoria that women are stronger and deserve far more credit than society gives. Eschewing the conventions of her day, she strikes out on her own to improve herself and the lot of American women.

Over the next several years, she sets into motion plans that shatter the old boys club of Wall Street and defile even the sanctity of the halls of Congress. But it's not just her ambition that threatens men of wealth and privilege; when she announces her candidacy for president in the 1872 election, they realize she may well usurp the power they've so long fought to protect.

Those who support her laud "Notorious Victoria" as a gifted spiritualist medium and healer, a talented financial mind, a fresh voice in the suffrage movement, and the radical idealist needed to move the nation forward. But those who dislike her see a dangerous force who is too willing to speak out when women are expected to be quiet. Ultimately, "Mrs. Satan's" radical views on women's rights, equality of the sexes, free love, and the role of politics in private affairs collide with her tumultuous personal life to endanger all she has built and change how she is viewed by future generations.

This is the story of one woman who was ahead of her time - a woman who would make waves even in the 21st century - but who dared to speak out and challenge the conventions of post-Civil War America, setting a precedent that is still followed by female politicians today.

A fascinating story of meteoric rise from rags to riches, from subservience to achievement - based on a true story

The mysterious, mystical Victoria Woodhull, a free-thinking woman well ahead of her time, is the narrator in this fictional treatment of her intriguing, at times incredible adventures.

Woodhull was the first woman to run for president of the United States, at a time when, with the full support of the law, most American men did not even regard their mothers, wives and daughters as citizens.

Born to a rag-tag band of âhealersâ whose medicines included dope and alcohol, and whose methods included blackmail and theft, Victoria was married off at the age of fifteen to a so-called doctor who beat her almost as badly as had her parents, and regularly consorted with prostitutes.

She and her sister Tennessee, or Tennie, went from their fatherâs business in spiritualist scamming (though both women would later claim genuine psychic powers), to promoting supernatural healing in the brothels of New York City, to getting into the parlors and pockets of such Wall Street magnates as Cornelius Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt at one point had Victoria telling him what stocks to buy and sell, profiting mightily from her seemingly prescient advice, and Tennie acting as his mistress. Woodhullâs second husband, Col.

enjoyable time travel story with an easter egg

This was a good relaxation read that kept me eagerly turning the pages on my Kindle at times. It had a dash of religion but was not so strong as to overwhelm the story. It was enjoyable watching the group come to grips with the fact that they had traveled back in time and watching how they adjusted. I did feel that at times things came too easily to them to be realistic (such as rich families taking them in at times and giving them a fair amount of money to help them on their way) but they also had to deal with some very rough times that helped them grow.

Eventually they do find out how far in the past they have gone (not going to indicate it here as not knowing "when" they are for awhile is part of the story's intrigue). Learning the date increased my enjoyment of the historical aspects of the story as they visited various places in their search for a place they could eventually call home.

There were a few parts of the story that I felt were rather contrived but overall, I definitely enjoyed the book.

Hint: Make sure you read the entire story as the authors have included an "easter egg" for those who do. :)

I would pay for this!

I almost never buy books. I read too much to be able to afford it. With that being said - BUY THIS BOOK!!!! Don't wait around for it to roll around on the freebie list again. It's too good for that!

Crossing the Rubicon (The Journey) is unlike anything else in the genre I have ever read. It's thought provoking. It's heartwarming. It keeps you enthralled (I read it straight through - not a lot of sleep for me that night). The author finds ways to incorporate history with modern technology in seamless ways, without raising the suspicion of the historical characters.

Could this time shift truly happen? I don't know that we will ever know, but the author certainly makes a good argument for it. And, if it ever happens, I truly hope that there is a Trinity in the mix :)

This Book Is A Must Read!!!

Review:

As heartbreaking as it is uplifting Crossing The Rubicon is a book everyone should read at least once. This book was narrated beautifully. I felt as if I was granted a rare glimpse into a diary that was never meant to be shared.
