    Publisher's Summary:
50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology uses popular myths as a vehicle for helping students and laypersons to distinguish science from pseudoscience.
    Members Reviews:
This book is measured, insightful, thorough and enlightening.
Here are some myths I had always assumed had some truth in them: some people are left-brained, others right-brained; adolescence is always a time of psychological turmoil; when dying, or when loved ones die, people pass through five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance); intelligence tests are biased against certain groups of people; men and women communicate in very different ways (Mars vs. Venus); most people who were sexually abused as children develop personality disturbances in adulthood; adult children of alcoholics display distinctive symptoms; the incidence of autism has increased; abstinence is the only realistic option for alcoholics; shock therapy is physically dangerous and immoral. It turns out that there is no good evidence for any of these.
The method of this book is to describe a myth, to give survey evidence that most people believe it, to trace the source of the myth and to give experimental evidence showing that the myth is not true.
All of us read or hear such myths, and because we hear them so often, and because they are so often the basis of television shows and movies, we come to believe there is some truth in them. But unfortunately most of the time they are nothing more than folk tales. I was pleased to learn that there is a whole industry dedicated to finding out whether they are true or false. But I kept wondering what measures I could take to avoid assimilating false information, other than to forswear all television, movies, newspapers and the internet. I also kept wondering whether it is possible to know anything much about the psychology of human beings.
This book is measured, insightful, thorough and enlightening. One annoyance is that on virtually every page you will find words separated arbitrarily by spaces: gen erate, par ents, dis etangling, experi ment, uni versity, person ality, astonish ment, advant age, etc. I cannot imagine why this got through.
    A must read for all!
Lilienfeld, Lynn, Ruscio and Beyerstein (2010) set out to debunk what many people view as "common sense " in their book 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology. If you have ever thought that people only use 10% of their brain or most mentally ill people are violent, this book is a must read. The authors provide strong, research evidence debunking what most of society believes is common sense. As a psychology student studying Clinical Psychology, I found this book to be well written for those who have never studied psychology. The authors do a great job describing statistical terms and research in a way that anyone can understand them. I enjoyed how they describe where many of these myths may have originated and why. While reading this book, I felt the authors where able to explain why so many people believe a statement, such as, âmost people experience a midlife crisis in their 40s or early 50s", and then show the reader, with valid research, why this statement is not true. This book is not only a great read for the psychology community, also a great read for anyone.

Title: The Secret Life of the Mind
Subtitle: How Your Brain Thinks, Feels, and Decides
    Author: PhD Mariano Sigman
    Narrator: John Chancer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-07-17
    Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Where do our thoughts come from? How do we make choices and trust our judgments? What is the role of the unconscious? Can we manipulate our dreams? In this mind-bending international best seller, award-winning neuroscientist Mariano Sigman explores the complex answers to these and many other age-old questions.
Drawing on research in physics, linguistics, psychology, education, and more, Dr. Sigman explains why people who speak more than one language are less prone to dementia, how infants can recognize by sight objects they've previously only touched, how babies - even before they utter their first word - have an innate sense of right and wrong, and how we can read the thoughts of vegetative patients by decoding patterns in their brain activity.
The cutting-edge research presented in The Secret Life of the Mind revolutionizes how we understand the role that neuroscience plays in our lives, unlocking the mysterious cerebral processes that control the ways in which we learn, reason, feel, think, and dream.
    Members Reviews:
    Horrible narration
The narrator seems to have no comprehension of the material. Certainly, his narration style gets in the way of clarity and the overall enjoyment of the book.
    The Mysteries of the Mind
How mysterious is the mind? So much so that we still separate it from the brain even though most are not dualists. This book tries, and succeeds to explain how the mind controls everything we do, even when we don't know it.
It is a book grounded in Neuroscience, but touches on all aspects of science. It also bring some philosophical questions into play. Most of what we have learned very recent, but there is so much more that we don't know. The author bring to date what things we now know, we think we know, and what is just fascinatingly unknown, and possibly unknowable.
Although we use our brains constantly, even when we are asleep, nearly all of the things we do are done unconsciously, and profoundly without even us realising it. This book sheds some light into the seemingly simple things we do and take for granted and how clever the mind is from hiding the complexities of these actions.
Highly recommended to everyone, especially those who are interested in Neuroscience and where it meets psychology. A very complex subject made easy to understand without loosing depth with some incredible new discoveries and theories. Well written and made thoroughly enjoyable by good narration.

Here are some of the things you will learn inside this guide:
As an INTJ woman you are rare and wonderful just the way you are.
    About the Expert
Caitlin Humbert is a writer who is part of the small subset of female INTJs. Having been an outcast much of her life due to her rare personality type, she chose to further research this small group of women with mainly unpopular characteristics for a female, and validate their traits and feelings.
    Members Reviews:
Wets the appetite but leaves you feeling unresolved
I bought this book hoping for something with solutions for the INTJ for how to manage their personality with others. Itâs a great synopsis of what an INTJ is & how they think & how a woman is different than a man of this temperament. So if you want an overview or validation about who you are as an INTJ woman, or if you want help with verbalizing & describing yourself, thereâs lot of good stuff here. I just wish this book could go more in depth & give many more solutions. Examples given by more than just the author could also be useful. Perhaps the best use of this book would be for reading by those who are in relationships with INTJ females - if they can handle the bluntness of an INTJ describing them self.
Specious and sloppy -- don't waste your money!
Written by an INTJ female, the author is a layperson who hasn't done her research; often she just generalizes her own inclinations to other INTJs (a very un-INTJ approach!). Full of typos and not properly edited (again, hard to believe this was written by a INTJ). Self-indulgent!
    Three Stars
Reiteration of most of what online sites will tell you.
    Overpriced for cliched insight
Extremely overpriced for a 50-something page, big print book that contains the exact same information (including the same humor) as I had already easily found online with minimal effort. I gained absolutely no new insights about INTJ females.

Start Publishing Notes' Summary, Analysis, and Review of Eric Barker's Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong includes a summary of the book, review, analysis, and key takeaways, and detailed "About the Author" section.
Preview: In Barking Up the Wrong Tree, Eric Barker examines the science behind success. In the introductory chapter, Barker explains that much of what we have been told about the qualities that lead to success is incorrect. Instead, we should look at successful people, examine their stories, and learn how to be more like them. Barker also adds that many success stories also contain warnings about what traps we should avoid since the qualities that lead to success can also be detrimental to human happiness. Barking Up the Wrong Tree is a continuation of Barker's successful blog, where he examines research and interviews experts about what makes a successful life.
The book is structured into six chapters, each with its own set of lessons for those looking to understand how to cultivate their own success. In the first chapter, Barker illustrates the contradictions behind success by examining the life paths of 81 high school valedictorians. After relatively good college careers, 90 percent of high school valedictorians worked in careers that were in the top 40 percent of the job tier. However, not a single valedictorian in the study went on to change the world.
Barker says that we have been advised to play it safe and avert risk, but that this advice often leads to mediocrity. Instead, research shows that the traits that make students impressive in the classroom makes them less likely to be "home-run hitters" once they leave the classroom.

    Members Reviews:
Not too religious, which is a good thing
I decided to purchase this book after losing Olive, and with the intention of seeking comfort. I want to clarify that, despite being the book written by a clergyman, it has less religious content than other books about the same subject. I just hate reading about pets going to heaven when I don't believe in God or heaven myself. Why is that agnostics or atheists don't have a right to be comforted? I guess it's just easier to believe in something greater. This book has less of that compared to other, but the second half is more loaded with religious stuff, which I found less interesting than the first half.
There is a chapter about assisting children with the loss of a pet, and it's something I missed from other books. I found the general tone of the book quite aseptic, which is not a bad thing but I missed somehow some empathy.
The book has some great pieces of advice on how to deal with the loss of a pet, and it doesn't go much into religion, but more into philosophy. It's not a perfect book by any means, but I found it more helpful than others. It also mentions some famous books and poems about the same subject, so it opens the possibility to exploring more about the subject.
Barry Abrams delivered a good and clear narration. I think his style went well with the book, and he even gave different voices to the texts by other authors included in the book. I think I would have preferred the book to be narrated with a bit more sentiment, but this was missing from the text too, so Abrams did a good job with the material he had.

An anecdote for those going through life knowing how others are feeling and what they are thinking
Very well done. Reading this book was an anecdote for me. After I read it, I felt much better and regained some long- lost confidence. I could tell much effort went into the making with a bank of information including content which was new to me. I've read many books on the subject of extrasensory perception--the sixth sense and the paranormal (pronormal). He almost lost me when I got to chromethesia, but I decided to stick it out. Making it to the end was like finishing a cross-country run. There were a few typos, but not enough to influence my five-star review. You get the gold star in my book. :) Kudos
