    Publisher: Vibrance Press
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
A marvel of evolution is that humans are not solely motivated by their desire to experience positive emotions. They are also motivated, and even driven to achieve, by their attempt to avoid or seek relief from negative ones. What Motivates Getting Things Done: Procrastination, Emotions, and Success explains how anxiety is like a highly motivating friend, why you should fear failure, and the underpinnings of shame, distress, and fear in the pursuit of excellence.
Many successful people put things off until a deadline beckons them, while countless others can't resist the urge to do things right away. Dr. Lamia explores the emotional lives of people who are successful in their endeavors - both procrastinators and non-procrastinators alike - to illustrate how the human motivational system works, why people respond to it differently, and how everyone can use their natural style of getting things done to their advantage. The book illustrates how the different timing of procrastinators and non-procrastinators to complete tasks has to do with when their emotions are activated and what activates them.
Overall, What Motivates Getting Things Done illustrates how emotions play a significant role in our style of doing, along with our way of being in the world. Listeners will acquire a better understanding of the innate biological system that motivates them and how they can make the most of it in all areas of their lives.

This is a very supportive book no matter what your motivational style is.
Dr. Lamia does a wonderful job of rescuing anxiety and deadline-driven people from the trash heap of research. Whether you are a task driven non-procrastinator, or a deadline-driven seeming procrastinator, you will find ways to accept yourself and others, and make the best of whichever kind of motivational system you have. I am a task driven person married to a deadline-driven person, and this has helped us become so much more empathic about and accepting of each other's totally valid ways of doing things. Thank you, Dr. Lamia.
There is often a fine line between extended reflection and procrastination
There is often a fine line between extended reflection and procrastination. In any workforce, some people demonstrate paralysis by analysis; there are others whose haste makes waste of resources. According to Mary Lamia, those who combine breakthrough thinking and high-impact results are deadline-driven.
More specifically, successful people are motivated and even driven to achieve by both positive emotions (e.g. "imagining a future reward") and negative emotions (e.g. "distress, fear, anger, disgust, and shame") and Lamia wrote this book in order to help her reader understand how to activate positive emotions and de-activate (if not eliminate) negative emotions.
With regard to great managers, they "don't try to change their employees, but instead, they identify their employees' unique abilities, recognize their diverse learning and implementation styles, and help them use those qualities to excel in their own way...Similarly, it is important for managers to recognize that tasks motivate some people who report to them, but that others may be motivated by deadlines. Further, whether an employee completes a task early on or at the deadline is less important than evaluating outcome.

    An interesting topic...
Having to move everyday around with a sociopath really is a difficult thing that a person can face. If one cannot handle the pressure that they bring to you, you will easily break down and everything will start to fall into pieces. Thanks to this book because I have learned many strategies and techniques on how to deal with them at work and with your life. Things are going smoothly because this one taught me on how to counter manipulate sociopaths and control them instead of you being controlled. I am so grateful to have read this one and thankful enough to appreciate what others cannot.

    Title: Why?
    Subtitle: What Makes Us Curious
    Author: Mario Livio
    Narrator: Arthur Morey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-11-17
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 19 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Astrophysicist and author Mario Livio investigates perhaps the most human of all our characteristics - curiosity - as he explores our innate desire to know why.
Experiments demonstrate that people are more distracted when they overhear a phone conversation - where they can know only one side of the dialogue - than when they overhear two people talking and know both sides. Why does half a conversation make us more curious than a whole conversation?
In the ever-fascinating Why? Mario Livio interviewed scientists in several fields to explore the nature of curiosity. He examined the lives of two of history's most curious geniuses, Leonardo da Vinci and Richard Feynman. He also talked to people with boundless curiosity: a superstar rock guitarist who is also an astrophysicist; an astronaut with degrees in computer science, biology, literature, and medicine. What drives these people to be curious about so many subjects?
Curiosity is at the heart of mystery and suspense novels. It is essential to other forms of art, from painting to sculpture to music. It is the principal driver of basic scientific research. Even so, there is still no definitive scientific consensus about why we humans are so curious or about the mechanisms in our brains that are responsible for curiosity.
Mario Livio - an astrophysicist who has written about mathematics, biology, and now psychology and neuroscience - explores this irresistible subject in a lucid, entertaining way that will captivate anyone who is curious about curiosity.
    Members Reviews:
    Fantastic, Makes You Think
Going into this book, I was looking for a narrative about what curiosity is, and what it means for us as humans. This is exactly that, and it's fantastic. It's more of Livio's notes about curiousity than an actual overview, and I think that's what make me like it more.
It's engaging enough that I REALLY enjoyed it, and Morey's delivery was well crafted. It's the first narration of his that I've really enjoyed.

  • The Quantum Screen: The Enigmas of Modern Physics and a New Model of Perceptual Consciousness Audiobook by Samuel Avery

Title: The Quantum Screen: The Enigmas of Modern Physics and a New Model of Perceptual Consciousness
    Author: Samuel Avery
    Narrator: River Kanoff
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-03-17
    Publisher: Wetware Media
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 30 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
What is the connection between physics and consciousness? In this groundbreaking new audiobook, Samuel Avery presents the quantum screen, a paradigm-shifting model of perceptual consciousness and of the world. This model looks to the enigmas of modern physics to demonstrate the primacy of consciousness - the essential oneness of spirit and matter.
Our intellectual culture is divided between two poles - science and religion. It's often assumed that these two disciplines - each individually essential and intriguing - cannot speak to one another. Physics cannot answer spiritual questions. Theories of consciousness have no place in the laboratory. In fact, the opposite is true.
While mental and physical experiences appear to be separate realities, Avery believes that a new understanding of dimensions (space, time, and mass) will unite them. Dimensions as structures of perceptual consciousness will awaken a creative convergence of quantum mechanics, relativity theory, and ancient meditation traditions.
Scientifically rigorous and spiritually profound, Avery's model is far from a mere concept or belief. He offers both an explanation of the quantum screen, as well as an opportunity to experience it directly. He deftly weaves humanism into the fabric of hard science. The result is illuminating and potentially life changing, with significant implications for how we understand nature, ourselves, and each other.
"Samuel Avery gives us a refreshingly original and delightfully well-written account of Reality, ripe with clarity and larger than scientific or religious narratives have yet to grasp. I enjoyed this highly original and deeply insightful look into the essence of consciousness and its relationships with the worlds of physics and biology." - Allan Combs, PhD, President of Society for Consciousness Studies, and award-winning author of Radiance of Being and Consciousness Explained Better

    Venturing overhead
Sometimes it's a good idea to read something over your head, something you only partially understand----as long as you trust where the writer is going. Familiar with the author from The Pipeline and the Paradigm and the earlier Globalist Papers (which I both recommend), I ventured into Sam Avery's Quantum Screen, a challenging read giving rise to meditation, conversation, and a surprising optimism about where human consciousness is going. Chris Chanlett
    A Unique Perspective
Avery presents a unique and thought provoking perspective on the nature on consciousness and the physical world that addresses the enigmatic findings of quantum physics and the inevitability of consciousness. Obviously thinking in progress, and a bit heavy on activism, it is nevertheless thought provoking as it turns conventional thinking inside out.
A new way to understand every day life!
This book shows an entirely new way to understand every day life. We don't need "matter" to explain what we see and touch. What is unique here is that this view is compatible with modern physics. I give it five stars and recommend it to be read by people who meditate, and are/or are fascinated by modern physics.
    Is Avery the new Einstein?
Finally, a readable book that links consciousness to quantum physics. We have heard there is a connection. Philosopher/scientist Samuel Avery shows us what it is.

Disclaimer: This is NOT the original book.
We are living in a world that worships extroversion and believes that extroverted people are the capable leaders of today. However, is that always the case?
We undervalue the introverts in our society and fail to see their brilliant contributions even though many successful people are introverts. Quiet deepens our understanding of quiet people and we will learn that introverts shine as brightly as extroverts in their own way, or maybe even more.

"Solitude matters, and for some people, it's the air they breathe." - Susan Cain
With scientific research and various interviews with real introverts, author Susan Cain gives us deep insights into how introverts think.
It changes the way we view introverts and allows us to better appreciate them, or ourselves if we are an introvert.
P.S. Quiet is not just about introversion in adulthood. It explores introversion at stages of life, starting from infancy, and that's the reason why this book is so powerful. It changes your perception of your introverted child and allows you to see from a much clearer point of view.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
After reviewing our practical and theoretical research, and focusing on Jung's theory as to the influence of the collective unconscious on the individual human psyche, it is essential to examine this issue from the standpoint of the psychology of individual distinctions.
All suppositions presented here have brought us to a better understanding of the contents of the unconscious sphere of the human psyche. Even if we were to accept Jung's theory of "dividing the human psyche", we think it would be one's personal unconscious because the unconscious sphere of the psyche directly controls many physiological reactions. The personal unconscious should be able to tell everything of one's personality by examining it not through collective values, but in the light of its individual archetypes. It should be able to explain everything about a person with respect to his individual perception of the world and of himself, his purpose, his behavior both in social and natural environments, his strategies and tactics, his way of thinking, his unconscious motivations, his needs, emotions, inclinations, preferences, meaning of his existence, etc.
It is obvious that without finding individual archetypal patterns as the basis for human personality, solving any individual or social-collective problems would not be possible since any society consists of individuals, who constantly affect one another.
