    Title: How Dogs Think
Subtitle: What the World Looks Like to Them and Why They Act the Way They Do
    Author: Stanley Coren
    Narrator: Bob Dio
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-30-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 12 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Best-selling author, psychologist, and world-renowned expert on dog behavior and training Dr. Stanley Coren presents the most informative, in-depth, fascinating book yet on dogs.
Acclaimed for its solid scientific research and entertaining, eminently accessible style, How Dogs Think gives you the insight that you need to understand the silly, quirky, and apparently irrational behaviors that dogs demonstrate, as well as those stunning flashes of brilliance and creativity that they also can display. It lets you see through a dog's eyes, hear through his ears, and even sense the world through his nose, as Coren presents a fascinating discussion of the way dogs interpret their world and their human companions, and of how they solve problems, learn, and take in new information.
How Dogs Think also answers questions about our canine companions that have puzzled many. Can dogs count? Do they have an appreciation of art or music? Can a dog learn how to do something just by watching another dog or even a person do it? Do dogs dream? What is the nature of dog personality? Which behaviors are prewired into your dog, and which can you actually change? And, can dogs actually sense future earthquakes or detect cancer?

Title: Overcoming the Destructive Inner Voice
Subtitle: True Stories of Therapy and Transformation
    Author: Robert W. Firestone
    Narrator: Will Damron
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-25-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Many people grapple with destructive thought processes or a "critical inner voice" that directs their behavior and, to varying degrees, limits their lives. Using deeply personal and very human stories based on his own clinical practice, noted psychologist Robert W. Firestone illustrates the struggles of his clients to give words to this "enemy within", and in the process overcome its damaging influence. These revealing and captivating stories offer glimpses into the uniquely human relationship that develops in the therapeutic encounter and demonstrate the powerful impact that the experience has on both client and therapist.
Dr. Firestone is the originator of a therapeutic method called "Voice Therapy", by which clients learn to identify the language of the defense system and eventually separate their own point of view from its harmful effects. Each story provides an intimate look into one person's life, illuminates aspects of his or her "dark side", and highlights an important insight into the therapeutic process.
This sensitively written book will evoke emotional responses in listeners, and inspire them to take action to challenge the dictates of their own inner critic.
    Critic Reviews:
"Rounding off these 11 personal accounts is an appendix that plainly illustrates the how-tos of voice therapy, making it clear that anyone can practice it with or without a therapist...professionals in the field of psychology will find the book repays the reading time with plenty of insight." (Publishers Weekly)

    Interesting
Entertaining book for therapists and those with an interest in psychology. Primarily psychoanalytic style of therapy. He seems to have been a very effective and creative therapist but writes in a sexist manner at times, objectifying women and describing womens accounts of their sexuality in a less believable, male focussed manner.
    personally Not for me
I don't want to go into the mind of people who had the extreme cases. Sure I feel for them but I don't want to bring that into my mind

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The Enneagram system is one of the most influential tools of self-discovery and personal development. When you discover your personality type using the enneagram, you may be amazed. The enneagram has proven to be extremely accurate. It reveals your strengths, weaknesses, core motivations, moods, and mannerisms. The Enneagram system of categorizing personality types has been around since ancient times. Although it has only relatively recently entered popular culture, the Enneagram system has gained increasing prominence in the arena of personal developmental and success research. The term Enneagram comes from the Greek word for the number nine. The reason being that there are nine unique character types. Each of the points in the enneagram represents a distinctive and diverse personality type. A person who has the traits of a type one (typically known as the reformer or perfectionist) may differ significantly from a man or woman who is a type four personality (classically recognized as the artist or the individualist). In depth analysis of the Enneagram uncovers profound self-discovery and is exceedingly useful when it comes to handling career, conflict, success, abundance and many aspects of a relationship.

    Easy to consume. Good storytelling
What did you love best about Easy Enneagram?
This is a great introduction to the enneagram. It is narrated good. Nice voice, good stories to support the theory.
What touched me the most is some of the anecdotal stuff and the quotes from big writers and thinkers in between chapters - they link matters well and are a good foundation for some reflections.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Whereas this book doesn't go as deep as other books o the topics, it is well balanced and inspiring. I made a few changes to my life after listening to it.
    Absolutely wonderful
Thank you so much for your authentic genuine and so wonderful writing. I felt you in each word and story and example. It welt as you were talking right here in my living room to me! That is a gift you have and thank you for sharing that gift with me. I will share this with all I know:)
    Ultimately an Advertisement
Truly, a helpful explanation of the Enneagram. Even better, we're the thoughts on personality development that may determine personality types. I appreciated the perspective that was not Judeo-Christian centric and yet not universalistic either. Disappointed with the ending that, although sincere I'm sure, was an advertisement for more and deeper answers to one's search for meaning via the author's website.
    Somewhat incoherent and overrated
Would you try another book from Craig Beck and/or Craig Beck?
    No
What about Craig Becks performance did you like?
Clear and fairly easy to listen to.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No
    Any additional comments?
The author comes across as someone who's well versed in self-development concepts, especially the law of attraction. He seems to gravitate towards a 'law of attraction' (which I don't completely buy into) perspective to the point of awkwardness at times though.
The type descriptions are fairly brief and not especially insightful compared to other available audiobooks about the Enneagram.
Also, the flow is a bit disjointed.

Subtitle: The Awakening of a Scientific Mind
Author: Marjorie Hines Woollacott, Pim van Lommel - foreword
Narrator: Paul Hawkwood - foreword, Marjorie Hines Woollacott
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 29 mins

    Release date: 03-28-17
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
As a neuroscientist, Marjorie Woollacott had no doubts that the brain was a purely physical entity controlled by chemicals and electrical pulses. When she experimented with meditation for the first time, however, her entire world changed. Woollacott's journey through years of meditation has made her question the reality she built her career upon and has forced her to ask what human consciousness really is. Infinite Awareness pairs Woollacott's research as a neuroscientist with her self-revelations about the mind's spiritual power. Between the scientific and spiritual worlds, she breaks open the definition of human consciousness to investigate the existence of a nonphysical and infinitely powerful mind.

    NDE's, Meditation and Alternative Healing
This was an interesting and enjoyable listen.
I was a skeptic and an atheist not long ago , so I was curious to hear someone else's experiences.
Despite reading quite a few books in this general area of research over the past few years, I still heard some interesting things I had not seen elsewhere. While much of the book is focused on meditation and NDEs (near-death experiences) as a grounds for there being "something more", there were also studies I hadn't seen regarding reincarnation, hypnotism and alternative healing modalities. I was excited that Reiki was one of these modalities she spent more time talking about, since I became initiated a few months ago. There were also some scientific theories I hadn't heard mention of in the past, like the "filter theory" for the brain.
Mrs. Woollacott's narration was pleasing. Although on occasion she'd pronounce a word in a way that was somewhat foreign to me, her voice is soothing and she enunciates quite well.
This is a good listen for those who are curious about what more may be out there, but also for those looking for reinforcement in their meditation practices and the "higher path" in general.
For those interested in further research I'd personally suggest any of Dr. Joe Dispenza's books and Michael Newton's "Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives".
    Peace and Love to all,
    Thanks for reading.
    Rare book for a scientist
    Interesting, but far from science.
I accept their are things beyond the material, and I commend the author for writing about it.
However what cannot be measured cannot be scientific. This does not mean its not true, but only that its beyond our subjective reach.
Not really a book if you're looking for scientific breakthroughs in this area of dualism.

    Exceptional
Fantastic, empathetic, well-researched and important work. Daniel Mate is one of my most favourite narrators.
A must read. Gives context to adhd chaos
Loved it. Listened to it straight through.
Puts adhd in a monumental different perspective and addresses the real issues. Opens up for understanding, compassion and curiosity as means of healing instead of a quick fix. Relevant for anyone interested in family dynamics and personal growth.
Must read for parents even from non add kids
Neither myself nor my kids are diagnosed with add. But the description of how anxiety arises in kids and how the attachment relationship can be disturbed are just so valuable. And even I think add is not an either you got it or not. It is actually a scale and certain traits at certain time will surface in almost everyone. So I found it very helpful just to get a better understanding of humans in general.
I loved the way it was red with beautiful intonation to make it interesting and easy to listen. Thanks to all involved!
    An Educator's Must Read
As someone with ADD, and working in education, this book has been VERY useful. I have many insights into how I act, and what my needs are from this insightful reference. I intend to refer back to many chapters as I attend to myself. I hope to inspire others with ADD to do the same and assist others to understand the person (child or adult) with ADD. I have recommended this book since I started reading it (the audio version was great to have!! I learn better with audio and visual!).
IF YOU HAVE ADHD/ADD YOU MUST READ THIS
Would you listen to Scattered Minds again? Why?
This book is becoming my bible ! anyone who has ADHD MUST READ THIS. TRUELY LIFE CHANGING

    Title: Solve For Happy

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-23-17
    Publisher: Macmillan Digital Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 23 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Solve for Happy is a startlingly original book about creating and maintaining happiness, written by a top Google executive with an engineer's training and fondness for thoroughly analyzing a problem.
In 2004 Mo Gawdat, a remarkable thinker whose gifts had landed him top positions in half a dozen companies and who - in his spare time - had created significant wealth, realized that he was desperately unhappy. A lifelong learner, he attacked the problem as an engineer would, examining all the provable facts and scrupulously following logic. When he was finished, he had discovered the equation for enduring happiness.
Ten years later that research saved him from despair when his college-age son, Ali - also intellectually gifted - died during routine surgery. In dealing with the loss, Mo found his mission: he would pull off the type of moonshot that he and his Google [X] colleagues were always aiming for - he would help 10 million people become happier by pouring his happiness principles into a book and spreading its message around the world.
One of Solve for Happy's key premises is that happiness is a default state. If we shape expectations to acknowledge the full range of possible events, unhappiness is on its way to being defeated. To steer clear of unhappiness traps, we must dispel the six illusions that cloud our thinking (e.g., the illusion of time, of control, and of fear); overcome the brain's seven deadly defects (e.g., the tendency to exaggerate, label, and filter); and embrace five ultimate truths (e.g., change is real, now is real, unconditional love is real).
By means of several highly original thought experiments, Mo helps listeners find enduring contentment by questioning some of the most fundamental aspects of their existence.

Mo inspired me with his sincere and honest stories. I owe him everything. Thank you.
fantastic narrative of a complex subject made easy
Loved it!! I foresee this becoming as renowned as "the power of now" but much easier to listen to and understand. fantastic metaphysical book told through a very personal story and logic.
    Extremely disappointed by ending.
This book was fantastic until religion was unnecessarily brought into it. I felt like i truly found a helpful no nonsense self help book but by the end i felt like the author was trying to convert me rather than help me.

For example, a person who spends a lot of time thinking about plane crashes, runway accidents and other air disasters may find themselves avoiding air travel. The goal of cognitive behavior therapy is to teach patients that while they cannot control every aspect of the world around them, they can take control of how they interpret and deal with things in their environment.

    Publisher's Summary:
This is a book summary of Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman.
    Original book description:
In the international best seller Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman, the renowned psychologist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, takes us on a groundbreaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System One is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System Two is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. The impact of overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the profound effects of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning our next vacation - each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems shape our judgments and decisions.
Engaging the listener in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives - and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble. Winner of the National Academy of Sciences Best Book Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and selected by The New York Times Book Review as one of the 10 best books of 2011, Thinking, Fast and Slow is destined to be a classic.

    some good information, but...
Would you try another book from Julia Samuel and/or Julia Samuel?
The author clearly has a great deal of empathy and sympathy for the bereaved. The book presents a broad range of clinical studies based on her actual clients who have lost family members, and in some cases, people in the painful process of facing death themselves.
I lost my dear wife almost 2 years ago, but I am still seeking help to deal with that. While I found some useful, relatable information here, be warned that many of the case studies are so heartbreaking this book is just as likely to trigger bad associations as it is to help you to heal. At times, the book wanders from the first-person memoir to self-help, to an approach so clinical it seems to be intended for other therapists. Her delivery does not help - though a jaunty speaking style would not be appropriate given the subject matter, Ms (Dr?) Sameul's soft, emotionless voice is so cold, it makes me think that she herself has been (understandably so) traumatized by her years of working with the bereaved. All this considered, I would still recommend the book, but suggest the written form would be a better choice, as you can skim through some of the truly heartbreaking stories and seek out the ones you find best relate to your own loss. And I would recommend it for clinicians as well.
My dear wife was a wonderful psychotherapist - it's not without irony that I would have suggested she read it herself. If you are curious about this book because you have lost a loved one, my heart goes out to you.
