I want to be Stitchs!

Oh this book! J. Daniels is already established as one of my Must Read Authors, but I was a bit late to the party - I only discovered her last year, some time before What I Need released and by that point I had consumed her entire catalogue to date. She has a way of writing characters in settings and situations that are realistic, relatable, and so entertaining. More than that, she writes about characters that stay with you long after you've finished the book (I'm looking at you Reese & Dylan, Reed & Beth, Riley & CJ, Wild & Trouble, and Loser & Legs). Not withstanding my deep and abiding love for the characters mentioned and the books they're from, Bad For You may just be my favorite of the bunch, though if not my favorite book, it definitely features my favorite characters. I aspire to be the type of friend that Shayla was - fiercely loyal, sensitive, empathetic, honest, self-sacrificing, and generous. And it would be an honor to recognize and love a man like Sean/Stitch. The prologue had me reaching for a Kleenex and wrapping him in my heart immediately. I'm not usually one for tearjerkers, but I happily made an exception for this and I wholeheartedly recommend this to EVERYONE. We (well I do at least) often focus on the Book boyfriends and how awesome they are, but in Bad For You, Im all Lets hear it for the GIRLS! Shayla might be the first heroine Ive read where I didnt think Id want to be her bestie IRL, but instead I want to BE her. This Book stole my breath then gave me life, broke my heart then pieced it back together stronger than before. Its a beautiful masterpiece...This will definitely be one of those books that I have to have in all of its forms - I preordered the paperback ages ago (like, as soon as that option was available) and the Audible version as well, and I will definitely be re-reading it into perpetuity.

No, I would not listen to another book narrated by Cassandra Campbell...it was a bit of a trial getting past the voice of this author and the various accents created for each character, to be able to enjoy the story...not sure to what extent the voice/accent (negatively) coloured my enjoyment ...

Was Paris Still Life worth the listening time?

Yes, I guess so in the end...it certainly made me aware of how the voice of the audible narrator can impact upon enjoyment of a story...

Is there anything you would change about this book?

If you listened to or read Book 1, The Tour, it was wonderfully delightful. Characters, history, narrator were vivid and interesting. This one was nothing like that so my advice is to stop at book 1

EXCELLENT BOOK!! ANOTHER AWESOME STORY FERN!

AWESOME STORY!! SAD BOOK! I HAD A LOT IN COMMON WITH THE CHARACTERS SHE CHOSE. I KNOW ITS FICTIONAL BUT TO ME IN MY 47 YEAR OLD HEART THE WHOLE BOOK WAS LIKE MY LIFES STORY!

Inaccurate "theme description"

This book was completely different than the summary. It is not really about an heiress deceived by her manipulative husband and her quest to understand while getting involved with another man. Though those things may occur, they are in a TOTALLY different context, the summary is a random cherry picking of events in the book. After 3 hours in I was very bored and uninterested and kept checking that I didn't misunderstand or misread the summary. These are the aspects of the book I wished I knew beforehand or that should be included or at LEAST hinted at in the summary:

1) In present day, Kristine and Logan are around their 40's with 3 children in their teens (maybe 16-17 yrs old)

2) The book flashes back from the mid-1960's then jumps to the present of the mid-1980's

3) Present day starts with Logan retiring from the US Military and the family living in Germany where Logan is stationed.

4) The family is moving back to the US since Logan is retiring and so Kristine and the kids go first while her husband is supposed to follow shortly after.

5) He never comes and THAT'S how Kristine was deceived (it occurs right away and didn't unravel in a suspenseful way so it doesn't matter)

So, she and the 3 kids learn right away that Logan took off with the trust fund money and the kids get involved in figuring everything out. The kids confront Kristine early on and tell her that she was an absent mom in the sense that she was very passive and their dad was a disciplinarian and had wandering eyes for other women (and of course Kristine is just stunned with this news). And THAT'S how Kristine learns how "manipulative" her husband was/is - there were no enthralling circumstances or incidents. There was no mention of a family with almost adult children in the mix. Had I known these were the actual events to unfold I would not have been interested in the book.

Not realistic...

I liked the book somewhat. It was a bit far fetched and in the end when the main character aged the author depicted her 70 year old age as far older than what a 70 year old is today. Also, the character Paul the main character's husband was far older than his age too. It made the book seem very unlikely. The character's depicted seemed with their ailments to be at least 85. Sorry it ruined the story. The author needs to do a little more research with aging.

Lovely story

I really did enjoy this book- but only 3 stars because, though the story is wonderful & quite captivating- the writing is not as mature 7 well develpoed as it could be. that said-- it's very enjoyable- a fast read-- so get it

When it was new and when it was second hand...

One black Dior coat, but 2 different owners-separated by generations.

Well written and easy to keep track as the story switches story lines. I did not want to put it down once I started it.

The coat

The life of two women that owned the same black velvet coat. One bought it new and other purchased it in a thrift store. The storyline goes back and forth between the 1960's and present day.

A Hidden Story of discovery.

Lots of twists and turns. Actually 2 stories in one. Took a bit to get the drift of authors style but the story was amazing. You need time to spend with this book. It is worth the investment.

I think I am out growing Marian Keyes. This was very dull and I knew what was going to happen right at the beginning.

Marian Keyes books used to be my reading-candy: funny, original, easy to digest - but somehow true, always with a really serious human theme underneath the lighthearted story. But this one leaves me speechless. Was there no editor to sharpen the story? Its full of repetitions, lots of loose ends that appear and disappear pointlessly. Yes, there are sparkles of the Keyes wittiness we love, but its so diluted, I can't recognize it.

Found this really really boring . Kept fast forwarding 5 chapters but nothing had changed . Had nothing of interest to say - just so so dull.

Could not get enough

Great book and this is my second Rachel Hauck and I enjoyed them both. I felt like I was part of the story. I highly recommend this 5 stars

Hovering Between Time Travel and Historical/Contemporary

Love the characters, plot and writing. Rachel Hauck is one of my very favorite authors. The bridge between the historical and present day created by Rachel Hauck is superior to any other book that hovers between time travel and historical. Her realistic time-tie-ins are inspired. Add to that her humor and true-to-life Christian characters makes her books wonderful. This makes up for the narrator who only has one voice . It is a nice voice but makes listening more difficult . Being an author who has had ideas stolen, I bonded with Birdie right away. Loved Coco Beach, the character.

Rachel Hauck when is your next masterpiece? This is a good for the soul book. Excellent from beginning to end.

Really creative story

Love this story so much. It took 2-3 chapters to be okay with the reader/narrator though. Too much of a southern and relaxed accent. Really hard to get past but once I did I enjoyed the story so much. I loved the weaving in with the past and present and the culmination of the story portraying such grace. A clear picture in the end of our human failings and how God weaves it all together. I loved this book and it touched me on so many levels.

The narrator's voice drove me nuts!

I may try to read it in my own but if you are planning on getting this book, get a sample first!

Enjoyable read.

I read some reviews thinking that this book glorified, or encouraged cheating, and affairs; but those reviewers clearly did not finish the book. In no way, does it encourage or glamorize affairs. If anything, its the opposite. Its initial dip of the toe, does make it sound like its something that is exciting, new, and can even save a marriage (as one character claimed); but the book goes on to highlight the painful, far casting ripple effect, that having an affair can cause.

As the rape goes; I think that also, was misunderstood, by some reviewers. There are many, many women and girls who experience that same kind of reaction to an incident, like the one told in the book. Not calling it rape outright, does not lessen the tremendous guilt and burden. And in situations similar to those set up in the book, they do cast confusion, doubt, and bewilderment, over exactly what did happened.

Overall, I enjoyed the characters in the book. It was a pleasant read, with no major climactic, cliff hangers. Just a book, about people, intertwined by life.

I'm a book worm. 3-5 books a week is my habit. I was drawn in and Captivated by this story, and more importantly, the characters. I cried. Hard. That's not easy to invoke, create, or induce. Wow. Thank you so much for the ride.. Wow...

I loved the narration on this book, she was aweso.e. The story was innovative and true. I enjoyed the philosophy behind the story. Another success for Carol Mason.
