    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 14 mins

    Publisher's Summary:
Andrew K. Smith's hooligan pranks and social impulsiveness paints a picture of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) before medication, and it would seem that the little orange pills could cure his mischief. But listeners will furrow their brows as they enter The Adderall Empire, traveling with Andrew K. Smith through the chemically conflicting mind states. Is working-memory training a feasible alternative? Listeners will beg for the answer, hoping Andrew stops getting into trouble before his parents disown him or he winds up in jail. Again.

    Someone wrote my biography
I enjoyed this book a lot. It was an auditory page-turner. Well-written, very poetically described. Not in a bad, over-pretentious way. Rather, it adds to the involvement/engagement, when relating to f.e. his feelings of guilt, shame and remorse, due to his "bad" (yet unintended) behavior.
I can SO relate to this book. In so many ways. And so would my parents and school teachers, should they ever hear this book. Whew.
It's rare that I rate a book five stars on all parameters - this one deserves it. There have been written great books about the mind of autists, from the autistic person's perspective. But none (?) about ADHD. This book needed to be written and Andrew has done a great job doing so!
What the book is not, is a sociological treatment of the Adderall drug-culture. It's a biography. An account of one guy's life with a diagnosis few people really understand the full implications of.
It's not child-safe, if you're easily offended by f.e. a foursome, despite one of the girls having her period. Sounds more gross than it is in the book. Just thought I'd mention it.
    Not the Whole Story
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend this book as a launching point for discussion about parental involvement in a child's education, teacher responsibilities in a child's education and the use of medicine as a tool for non-life-threatening, non-physical health issues diagnoses.
Has The Adderall Empire turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No
What does Robert Neil DeVoe bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
If I was reading rather than listening I would probably skim over certain passages rather than read every word because there are chapters/sections that simply to not seem to add to the story which would lead me to want to brush over. The narrator "forces" me to pay attention to every paragraph.
Could you see The Adderall Empire being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    NO!
    Any additional comments?
First the disclaimers... I received an audio version of this book for no charge in exchange for an honest review. Also, I have no experience whatsoever with people, younger or older, diagnosed with ADHD or ADD. Finally, I am a stay-at-home mother of three, the oldest going into high school and the youngest entering middle school, and I have volunteered 400 or so hours to their elementary school for each of the last 8 years.

Title: Overwhelmed? Effective Ways To Overcome Adrenal Fatigue
    Subtitle: The Adrendal Syndrome Explained
    Author: Nathaniel Cross
    Narrator: Krystal Wascher
    Format: Unabridged

    Publisher: Speedy Publishing LLC

    Genres: Science & Technology, Medicine
    Publisher's Summary:
Most of us know that the body is connected. What happens in what part of the body can affect another part; however, most of us don't always understand how this happens and what the true impact is. Take the connection between the thyroid and the adrenal glands. The hypothalamus sends a message to the pituitary gland, which then sends messages to the adrenal glands and thyroid - this negative feedback loop is called the HPTA (hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid-adrenal) axis. The thyroid hormone is responsible for telling your cells how quickly to produce protein and burn energy. The primary job of the adrenal gland is responsible for producing the correct amount of stress hormones.
This is what the book. Overwhelmed? Effective Ways To Overcome Adrenal Fatigue by Nathaniel Cross is all about, you can learn the best ways to overcome adrenal fatigue. Did you know that adrenal fatigue is deadly and can be fatal if not treated? For your thyroid to function optimally, you need the correct amount of cortisol. If there is an imbalance anywhere along the HPTA, it can lead to an underactive or overactive thyroid or adrenal gland. This is also why there can be thyroid dysfunction even when your thyroid lab is in the normal range. Graves' disease, which causes hyperthyroidism, often results after a sudden stressful change in a person's life. Too much stress also leads to the thyroid slowing or hypothyroidism.
    Members Reviews:
    Repetative Information
The information contained within this book was, for the most part, very repetitive. The first three chapters continually list the same symptoms, connection with the thyroid, and how the adrenal glands affect the rest of the body. There was some information that I found interesting that may have taken a lot of reading to come across. This is the first publication that I downloaded regarding adrenal fatigue, so I have nothing to compare it to.

  • Understanding Autism Audiobook by Chloe Silverman

    Title: Understanding Autism
Subtitle: Parents, Doctors, and the History of a Disorder
    Author: Chloe Silverman
    Narrator: Margie Lenhart
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-17-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Medicine
    Publisher's Summary:
Autism has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years, thanks to dramatically increasing rates of diagnosis, extensive organizational mobilization, journalistic coverage, biomedical research, and clinical innovation. Understanding Autism, a social history of the expanding diagnostic category of this contested illness, takes a close look at the role of emotion - specifically, of parental love - in the intense and passionate work of biomedical communities investigating autism.
Chloe Silverman tracks developments in autism theory and practice over the past half-century and shows how an understanding of autism has been constituted and stabilized through vital efforts of schools, gene banks, professional associations, government committees, parent networks, and treatment conferences. She examines the love and labor of parents, who play a role in developing - in conjunction with medical experts - new forms of treatment and therapy for their children. While biomedical knowledge is dispersed through an emotionally neutral, technical language that separates experts from laypeople, parental advocacy and activism call these distinctions into question. Silverman reveals how parental care has been a constant driver in the volatile field of autism research and treatment, and has served as an inspiration for scientific change.
Recognizing the importance of parental knowledge and observations in treating autism, this book reveals that effective responses to the disorder demonstrate the mutual interdependence of love and science.
    Members Reviews:
    Misunderstanding?
If you seek to understand autism, do not spend time listening to this. I misunderstood the title to mean that the book would attempt (at least) to explain autism. I guess it was about the history of how people (mostly doctors and parents) have sought to 'understand autism'.
    The history chapters are okay.
The modern controversy chapters are quite bizarrely approached. She subscribes to the common media tactic of giving equal time to 'both sides' of the issue(s) discussed. As is they carry equal weight and support. It is slightly refreshing to find a moderate voice, but the bizarreness is in the use of the "parents' love" lens to see the arguments. She disregards the reality of real world conflict and politics and seems to think that everything can just be neat and tidy if we wrap it up in a lovely bow. A bow of a parent's love for their child. So odd.

    Publisher's Summary:
With time, leaves change color. If a snowstorm of an early winter suddenly comes along, what will happen to these variegated beautiful leaves? Will they still hang on, or will they fall off? What kinds of leaves will hang on, and why will they be able to? What kinds of leaves will fall off, and why will they do so? Generally, they should all fall off, but in reality, a few of them unwaveringly remain unshed by the tree branches.
If we are those leaves, and the snowstorm is cancer, how will we react, and what are we thinking when we are diagnosed with deadly cancer? Who among us will overcome cancer, and why will we be able to? Who among us will be defeated by cancer, and why will we be? Typically, advanced medicines and modern equipments could treat most deadly sicknesses nowadays, but the veracity is almost the complete opposite for lethal cancer.
Commonly yet characteristically, how are cancerous tumors created to begin with? How can we prevent ourselves from high risks of having cancer? How can we help ourselves fight against fatal cancer? Is cancer actually the untreatable illness? Can cancerous cells be reversibly transformed?
This book will provide insight into the most promising way that its listeners can protect themselves not only from cancer but also from most other threatening illnesses once and for all.

    The Undeniable Truth
If you could sum up The Resolve to Transform Cancer in three words, what would they be?
    Everyone should read (listen)
What about Josh Goodmans performance did you like?
    Excellent!
    Any additional comments?
    1. I like the logical tone of the book and its content so much that I couldn't help, but listen to it over and over again. 2. It seems to me that the narrator (Josh Goodman) is also interested in the book's contents. This important factor explains why he can easily attract the attention of his listeners. His voice is clear, and his expressive tone sounds as if he is in a conversation with not only the authors but also the audiences. 3. I would recommend The Resolve to Transform Cancer to all my friends who are struggling with sickness or miserable.
    A truly unexpected surprise!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Unreservedly recommend it to everyone. All messages communicated through short stories in this book are practically useful and realistically helpful. They all caught me by complete surprise.
What did you like best about this story?
    Simple but well thought-out.
Have you listened to any of Josh Goodmans other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not really. Josh's narration was clear and expressive. Extra pauses and slow pace make it easy for Josh to grab and hold his audience's attention.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book truly jolts me back to reality. It neither makes me laugh nor cry, but it makes me feel as if I just wake up from a long, delusional dream. I honestly do not realize that I have inadvertently subjected my body to physical anguish and my mind to emotional distress all along.
    Any additional comments?
This book is useful for both, the healthy and unhealthy people.

In America, it's estimated that 30 million people suffer from abnormal thyroid function. Half are unaware of it and women are eight times more likely to develop thyroid problems than men. Depression, irritability, fatigue, high cholesterol, rapid weight gain or loss, muscle weakness, hair loss, heart arrhythmias, stiff or swollen joints; these are just a sampling of the debilitating medical maladies that can result from a malfunctioning thyroid. Thyroid disease is a patient and silent thief. It can take years or even decades to develop while steadily robbing its victims of the joy of everyday living. An dangerous disease, too many people accept its ravages upon mind and body as an inevitable part of the aging process. What is this disease and what can you do to combat it? The answer to the latter part of this question is simple: See a doctor for evaluation. The answer to the former part, as you will soon see, generally depends on which form of the disease you have: hypothyroidism, or hyperthyroidism. Can the Thyroid Diet Really Help? by Melinda Bell is the go-to source for many women that suffer from this terrible ailment. Who among us hasn't had a doctor reach out and touch our necks along both sides of the windpipe? He or she was conducting a digital exam to determine if the thyroid gland, located just above the collarbone, was swollen or the presence of growths called nodules could be detected. Growing professional awareness of thyroid disorder has doctors erring on the side of caution these days, and a simple blood test will likely be ordered as the next step toward diagnosis. Disappointing & Contradictive
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The information contradicted itself. Soy is good for you in one part, bad in another. Eggs provided a good source of nutrition in one part of the book, avoid eating eggs in another part of the book. I think the inconsistency with the nutritional guidance makes this book disappointing.
What was most disappointing about Melinda Bells story?
The contradiction for the nutritional advise and guidance.
What three words best describe Moe Rocks voice?
    Inconsistent, contradiction, confusing.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It confirmed my hunch that fluoride is bad for the body and is a diluted toxin we have in many of our foods and products.

    Title: Ticked
Subtitle: The Battle Over Lyme Disease in the South

    Language: English

    Genres: Science & Technology, Medicine
    Publisher's Summary:
Ticked: The Battle Over Lyme Disease in the South is the second installment of Discover In-Depth, Discover magazine's new longform series. In this deep investigation of the science surrounding Lyme disease, writer Wendy Orent dissects how tick-borne illness is diagnosed in the Southern United States, where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) do not recognize Lyme - even though thousands of people in the South have reported Lyme-like symptoms and debilitating illness after exposure to ticks. If left untreated, Lyme disease can result in devastating neurological and cardiac complications and difficult-to-treat pain and fatigue. Earlier this year, the CDC announced that Lyme disease was 10 times more prevalent than previously reported, with as many as 300,000 sufferers across the U.S. But while the CDC recognizes the disease in the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic States, in the Midwest, and even in California and Oregon, the Southern U.S. has been left out of the equation - despite emerging evidence that Lyme or a Lyme-like infection may be present there as well. While patients elsewhere are far more likely to get diagnosed and treated in the early stages of the disease, sufferers of possible tick-borne illnesses in the South are left guessing at what is wrong and how to treat it. The issue is critical not only because of all of the unexplained illnesses in the South, but also because new tick-bore bacteria could be agents of disease nation- and worldwide. Ticked examines the complex ecology of the Southern states, including a host of ticks and spirochetes that some researchers contend may be spreading a Lyme-like disease, if not Lyme itself. The story also dives into the fierce debate now brewing between scientists over how tick-borne illness is transmitted, detected and defined.
    Members Reviews:
    Ticked--the battle over Lyme Disease
This is an excellent book which summarizes well the failure of the Center for Disease Contol to acknowledge the presence of Lyme disease or similar tick borne diseases (erchlicosis or babeosis) in the south. As a result of their refusal to admit that lone star ticks carry these diseases, numerous people have not been given the correct medication for these tick carried diseases, and may suffer long term, chronic problems as a result. It is a well written book, possibly a little too detailed, but it does an excellent job of explaining what caused this failure to realize that tick borne diseases exist in the south.
    Informative
It was refreshing to read a detailed and apparently well researched almost dissertation on the subject. When a government organization such as the CDC suddenly revises there appraisal of the number of cases of Lyme disease from 30,000 to 300,000 per year, then the likes of this type of investigative reporting is essential to our health. Trust... but VERIFY to keep the powers that be honest.
    praying for a cure
facts and wonderful info, something needs to happen in the medical community to help those that suffer with a illness they say doesn't exist
    Interesting reading
I like the detail that orent provided, but in some ways the book was not that different than the Discover article.
    Good information.
