But as researchers unearth the deep neurological roots of the condition, those who have already been driven towards the edge are seeking radical treatment from a few unorthodox surgeons.

    Interesting and unbiased
I found this book to be quite informative and sensitively written. I was aware of the existence of BIID before reading this book, but hadn't found a good layman accessible book that wasn't too technical or indepth and which wasn't sensationalized and/or overly interested in portraying the people affected as freaks or deviants.
I really hope that future research allows for non-surgical treatment options that work for these people and their families... but until then, I have no doubt that this book can help people and their loved ones understand what they're dealing with a little more clearly and help them not feel so isolated and alone.
Very well done. I saw another reviewer comment that the writing wasn't up to scratch, and I must respectfully disagree. In my own assessment, I found the writing well suited to the material and very sensitively handled. The author wasn't showing the patient histories as anything freakish or sensationalized and I for one appreciated his even-handed portrayal of them and their families. I found these real people sensitively portrayed and very compelling.
Thank you for an interesting read.

Good info, great narration, bad language
Had it not been for the f-bombs and other obscenities, this would have been a great listen worthy of five stars. The narrator is wonderful and adds a lot of drama to the read, even singing some parts.
This book contains valuable info for people who have just been diagnosed as well as for people who have fought with the disease for years. However, if obscenities offend your ears, you would be better off with another book on the topic.
    could not stand the narrator

This book is a series of discussions about different aspects of diabetes. The information presented is not very detailed, but it is good, basic information about the subject.
It's very good information for someone that has just been diagnosed with the disease. There are discussions about diet, common medications, and alternative medicine. I found the discussions about how the disease works to be the most useful. This is a short book that gives good information for the patient that is new to the subject. Personally, I do not agree with all of the ideas presented (for example, hypnosis - thus, I subtracted a star from the overall score), but I believe this book to be worth the price.
The narrators are very good for this type of book. I am not a native Spanish speaker, but I understood most of the material in the discussions.

    Members Reviews:
    Great, insightful book
I have been using a Dexcom CGMS (Continuous Glucose Monitoring System) for almost 3 months now. Though I was pretty sure I knew almost all there was to know about it, I learned some new helpful things from this book, and had a few good laughs too. The book is well-written, and not so "politically correct", which I happen to love. The author states a lot of things exactly as I would, frustrations and all, because let's face it, diabetes causes a ton of frustration sometimes, and we are emotional beings. I commend the author on the layout of the book as well, which couldn't have been very easy to put in any kind of sensible order, yet somehow, it flows.
My ONLY gripe with this book (sorry) -- is that the author says that inserting a sensor can be painful, and the needle is huge, etc., although he may be going for comical in these instances, I can honestly say that if I hadn't already been using a CGMS, this would have made me flee in the opposite direction, because I get way too grossed out over things like that. I'll admit my first 3-4 weeks (one new sensor per week), I got a little light-headed and dizzy after inserting one. I didn't find that it was painful at all, it just gave me the heebie jeebies, plain and simple. Though I'm pretty sure my choice to go with the Dexcom brand was a really good choice for me, because you can't really see the needle at all inside of the insertion device. You really have to try looking for it to see it (and the needle probably isn't as big as you think it is). If I could see the needle clearly, I'm not sure I ever would have had the guts to insert the first one, and my insurance company would have wasted a ton of money because the CGMS system probably would have sat in a closet somewhere, collecting dust and being useless. It's such an amazing tool to help control your blood sugar. It's not perfect, but it's a miracle compared to finger sticks.
If you are considering getting a CGMS, just do it. You will be glad you did. And read this book too. Inserting sensors really isn't painful at all in my opinion. If you're freaked out about doing it, just be sure that you give yourself enough time with the first insertion, and be sure that someone is there with you. If you're anything like me, things like that risk causing you to pass out lol. I picked an evening where I had nowhere to be, and I had someone with me. I stayed in all night and just got used to wearing it, in the comfort of my own home.

    Publisher's Summary:
Though not all physicians are aware of the scientific advances that prove it, most diabetics can now avoid insulin injections and prevent or reverse the deadly complications of their disease. The key is treating the root problem - insulin resistance - instead of focusing on controlling blood sugar levels, an outdated practice that puts patients at greater risk for heart attack and stroke. Take Charge of Your Diabetes showcases the unique plan Dr. Zaidi has developed in treating thousands of cases of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes successfully. Dramatically different from traditional treatment protocols, the program includes an easy-to-follow diet, a moderate exercise and stress-reduction plan, vitamin and supplement recommendations, and a prescription-medication regimen that reduces the number of medications as time goes on instead of the traditional treatment model: stepping up doses as diabetes progresses.

She translates extensive research into practical information and presents listeners with concrete steps for achieving a healtheir lifestyle, as well as strategies for navigating the health-care system.

    Title: Blindsight
    Author: Chris Colin
    Narrator: Chris Colin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-28-12
    Publisher: The Atavist
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Medicine
    Publisher's Summary:
In March of 1994, Simon Lewis was a Hollywood man on the rise. He had started in the film industry as a lawyer and worked his way up to become a big-budget studio producer. He'd helped shepherd one of the most successful comedies in film history. He'd married the love of his life. And then one night, in a few seconds, everything changed.
In Blindsight, author Chris Colin unspools the remarkable true story of a horrific accident and the life that followed it. A killer at large. Unlikely twists of fate. Miraculous medical oddities. Otherworldly perceptions. Lewis's is a tale of one man's love and loss, and of the strange turns awaiting a life remade.
    Members Reviews:
A fascinating tale you'd think was fiction.
My reviews of stories published by The Atavist are going to get very redundant. They are brilliant at finding the perfect writer to tell the perfect story.
As for BlindSight: It captivated me from the beginning. Successful Hollywood producer gets in an accident, loses his wife, goes into a coma, then spends 15 years relearning the world? It's almost unbelievable in its reality.
If you're a fan of movies like Memento you'll enjoy this. If you're a fan of solid non-fiction story telling you will enjoy this. If you're a fan of human triumph that doesn't necessarily have a traditional happy Hollywood ending, you will enjoy this.
A hero's story of endurance and resilience
Blindsight is a rarity, a most often trauma-induced medical condition in which a person without sight can "see" through the blindness without consciously registering images. A person with blindsight will navigate around a garbage can without ever visualizing the obstacle. Blindsight is seeing without seeing, the brain doing a workaround.
Simon Lewis developed blindsight after being crushed body and soul in a horrible 1994 car wreck that killed his wife of five months, left Lewis in a four-month coma and became the start of a decade-long crawl back toward daylight.
Storyboard, Panel 1 of 5: Lewis is a Hollywood kid who loves the movies and starts by shooting a high schooler, backyard version of "Macbeth." Some time later a string of progressively more main-stream B-movies follow. At the top of that heap is "C.H.U.D.2." Then the young producer latches onto a hokey script and hustles to sign 70s has-been John Travolta. The movie is about a tough talking baby who telegraphs his thoughts to the audience and bam, "Look Who's Talking" is the smash hit of 1989, beating every other hit of the year including "When Harry Met Sally" and "The Little Mermaid." At about the same time, he meets Marcy and records another triumph when she, "talkative and vivacious," agrees to marry him, "pale and bookish."
Storyboard, Panel 2: March 2, 1994. If he would have paused outside the fancy Italian restaurant they both loved to tie his shoelace before getting into their brand new Infiniti he would have driven through the intersection of Beverly Boulevard and McCadden Place a couple seconds later and missed being T-boned by that white 1978 van running the stop sign full-throttle at 75 miles per hour. In a home nearby a couple eating dinner thought a bomb had gone off. They ducked under their dinner table.
Storyboard, Panel 3: The paramedics first on the scene report no survivors in the Infiniti.
