    Publisher's Summary:
Twenty years ago all of them would have been given up for dead, with no realistic hope for survival. But today, thanks to incredible new medical advances, each of these individuals is alive and well . . .Cheating Death.
In this riveting book, Dr. Sanjay Gupta - neurosurgeon, chief medical correspondent for CNN, and best-selling author- chronicles the almost unbelievable science that has made these seemingly miraculous recoveries possible. A bold new breed of doctors has achieved amazing rescues by refusing to accept that any life is irretrievably lost. Extended cardiac arrest, "brain death," not breathing for over an hour-all these conditions used to be considered inevitably fatal, but they no longer are. Today, revolutionary advances are blurring the traditional line between life and death in fascinating ways.
Drawing on real-life stories and using his unprecedented access to the latest medical research, Dr. Gupta dramatically presents exciting accounts of how pioneering physicians and researchers are altering our understanding of how the human body functions when it comes to survival-and why more and more patients who once would have died are now alive. From experiments with therapeutic hypothermia to save comatose stroke or heart attack victims to lifesaving operations in utero to the study of animal hibernation to help wounded soldiers on far-off battlefields, these remarkable case histories transform and enrich all our assumptions about the true nature of death and life.

    Very interesting and insightful
As a non-physician medical professional, this was a great book. I don't know the long term outcome of his ideas and/or observations, but if ANY of them become part of the accepted medical culture, it'll be worth it. I recoommend to all medical, pharmacy and nursing students, residents, and practicing clinicians.
    Great Book!
One reviewer said the author was monotone and should not have narrated his own book. I totally disagree. Sanjay did a great job because like he said, he is passionate about what he does. There was nothing monotone about it. Great book with great insight with relevant patient stories to accompany.
    A must read

    Title: REM Sleep
    Subtitle: Medicine & Inventions

    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-18-09
    Publisher: iMinds
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Medicine
    Publisher's Summary:
Learn about REM sleep with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. REM is an important component of sleep. But sleep itself is a difficult phenomenon to study because it is such an insular process. Dreams in particular are highly elusive for the researcher of sleep. As dreaming is a "state of mind", theories concerning it are frustratingly convoluted and highly theory-based, with any advancement unlikely to be supported by hard evidence. However, what scientists can do is measure the physical reactions that take place in our bodies and by our bodies when we are sleeping. This helps us understand what happens to us when we sleep and what REM is all about.
From close monitoring of sleeping subjects, scientists have been able to discover an arc that we all go through in our unconscious state. Basically, sleep is divided into two cycles: REM and NREM. The former stands for "rapid eye movement" and the latter stands for "non-rapid eye movement".
Perfect to listen to while commuting, exercising, shopping or cleaning the house.. iMinds brings knowledge to your MP3 with 8 minute information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

    Editorial Reviews:
Sleep is a difficult subject for scientists to study, but a major discovery was made by Nathaniel Kleitman and Eugene Aserinksy when they identified rapid eye movement, so named for the quick motions made by the eye during sleep. It is during REM sleep where dreams occur and the brain is most active. This iMinds production is a brief but illuminating overview of REM sleep, performed with a satisfying calm by Elouise Rothwell. Her soothing style seems fitting with the subject matter, and she relaxes the reader even as she informs.

    Publisher's Summary:
Learn about the discovery of Penicillin with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. When Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928, it was a lucky accident. He didnt realize at the time that penicillin would dramatically change the face of medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.
Fleming was a researcher studying the natural antibacterial substances produced by the body. He had been working with the bacteria that caused boils. To study the bacteria he grew colonies of it on plates. He later took a holiday leaving plates of bacteria to grow while he was away. On returning from his holiday, he noticed a mold growing on one of the plates. Colonies of the bacteria, which should have been growing around the mold, had died off. Fleming knew this to be strange and went about trying to identify the mold. He discovered the mold produced an antibacterial substance which he later named penicillin. However, the penicillin produced by the mold was elusive and seemingly impossible to separate from the concoction in which he had cultivated it. As Fleming was unable to isolate the penicillin and did not yet realize its importance, he abandoned his work.

    Editorial Reviews:
Alexander Fleming's discovery of the antibiotic penicillin, in 1928, was an important development in medicine, as it enabled the treatment of previously grave diseases. But it was a sheer act of accidental luck that Fleming, a scientist studying bacteria, made the crucial breakthrough. Luca James Lee performs a clear and concise style that turns the medicine's fascinating, convoluted science and background into a compelling yet easy-to-follow history. The authority of Lee's voice helps listeners to grasp the significance of penicillin as a medical tool in this effective iMinds title.

    Interesting
pieces on kissing (though the front-page pic is obviously meant to entice us more than the article itself) and the genetics of personality, though by far the most important writing in this issue is on the grotesquely irresponsible overprescription of antidepressants and the commercialization of drugs.

This issue of Scientific American Mind features cover story "Bored?, an engrossing article which explores lifestyle research into the ultimate cures for boredom. Another four articles explore similar neuropsychological themes, reviewing three decades of research into raising successful and intellectual children, exploring new medical uses for hallucinogenic drugs, investigating the evolution and existence of empathy throughout the animal kingdom, and outlining the gender-specific skills which lead women and men to pursue different types of jobs.
Mark Moran has a clear, conversational performance style which genuinely invites listeners into these exciting dialogues about scientific advancement and discovery.
    Members Reviews:
    Bored?...
...then skip the first article, taking its own simple advice: "find something interesting to do." (How much funding did it take to come to THAT conclusion?!) A bit more interesting is the study on animals and empathy, though it's pretty old territory, dating back to a 1960's study with rats. (No real new ground here if you have read anything on the subject before.) The best article is probably on children who succeed: it exposes the flaws of the Mr. Rogers mentality ("you are special!") which has led an entire generation to have more of a tendency to give up when things get tough, since they are more likely to believe that skills are innate rather than acquired--and thus they miss the obvious fact that developing skills always requires motivated and repeated trying.

    Not what i thougt
I thought i was going to hear about some secret nerve the whole audio, but it was only for about 30 minutes, when he talked about it in whales and some other animals. Interesting that there can be some nerve, but i did not hear anything about it that i can use.
Also he talked about online dating, people who collect stuff, and some other stuff too.
I give it 2 stars. For telling me about this nerve.
    Interesting Issue...
With everything from the primitive nerve that may have a lot to do with mating to tips to successful online dating (or successful avoidance of same).
