Maniac hero chef.

I loved reading Marcos tales of the solid hard work that is normal in British kitchens. His drive to be the best and his path getting there were so interesting. Having lived and worked in London in kitchens in the 80's , he shares the truth albeit raw and nasty. This is a great read for anyone going into this profession and people who love food'

Amazing story!

I was listening outside my normal times because I don't want to stop. An amazing man with an amazing story.

Obsession with Michelin stars

Obsession with Michelin stars and with restaurant perfection invades all aspects of this creative person's life. Not a likeable character. Yet we follow his struggles.

Protagonist could have used a ton of therapy.

Very funny and deeply absorbing-with plenty of great background info on Marcos life

For me, this book was pure joy from beginning to end. Before reading the book, all I knew about the author was that he was very gifted chef and a screamer in the kitchen. But within the first few pages I was caught up in the story of his upbringing, his training as a chef, and the culinary world he lived in. I laughed out loud in a number of places, and thats not usual for me, and I learned a ton about cooking and gastronomy. I even got a few cooking tips along the way that Ill be able to use in the future. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is even moderately interested in food. Bravo, Marco!

Play by Play

I watched the movie about a month ago and was really impressed with Bryan Cranston's acting in "The Infiltrator" as the undercover agent, Robert Mazur. Listening to Mazur as an true undercover agent on what went down Medellín cartel and the banks is even better than the movie. The movie is a must watch for anyone who watched the first two seasons of Narcos on Netflix. They go hand and hand, but there was a reason why I wanted to read this book because of the play by play.

Agent Robert Mazur recounts everything on what went on being undercover for five years and being away from his family. Before they roll the credits and after the last scene ends, you get to read what happens, like an epilogue with the main characters in the movie. Well, after they bust the cartel in Mazur's fake wedding, there is a lot more in the book. Like his name tag in the trial.

Great story, great performance

There almost wasn't enough in this book. The stories here are amazing and unbelievable, if you don't know how federal law enforcement works. Highly, highly suggested!

This book is fantastic in both subject matter and delivery. The level of detail and candor are several notches above many books in the genre.

Very blow-by-blow. Great guy, great storyteller

I had just finished a book centered on the notorious BCCI bank, and this one fits well with that story. This Mazur is a smart guy, always thinking on his feet, and we get tons of details large and small here, as he walks us right into the luxury suites and office scenes of money laundering in that era, connecting of course to the Colombian cartels. Not only did Mazur have to keep up an Oscar-worthy act in real time as an undercover Customs agent posing as a mafia guy, but back in the law enforcement bureaucracy lurked all kinds of people pushing their own agendas that could get him killed out on the streets. So, after a hard day of cruising around in Porches and Rolls to parties and shopping trips with mobsters, he and his team would have to battle the back-office stuff too. And it all required a sharp eye, every inch of the way. And a sharp storyteller like this, naturally with an eye for the nuanced, telling details, plays it all beautifully here.

A wonderful read...

I decided to get this book because it was something different than my usual choices. I thought it would be interesting to learn about the health problems of black people. I learned so much more though. I had no idea what difficulties a black doctor faced. It was an even-handed reflection on prejudice. I was surprised at the degree of health problems he encountered. I still can't see the logic of 30 hour shifts. It was an eye-opening book. Well done.

Interesting

Tweedy tells the story of his life in medical school, residency and in medical practice as a black man. He attended Duke University Medical School in 1996. He tells the story of his humiliation of being mistaken for a maintenance worker by his professor. He says he felt uncomfortable and like an outsider all during his schooling at Duke. He also discusses the affirmative action and how helpful it has been to the minority.

The author also delves into his health problems. He goes into depth about his diagnosis of hypertensive kidney disease which is very common among the blacks. He moves back and forth between anecdote and analysis. He reviews the health problems of blacks and how this relates to poverty and ignorance. He discusses the past history of medical experimentation on blacks without their knowledge or consent. He also delves into the two-tiered system where blacks are less likely than whites to have access to quality health care. Unfortunately, Tweedy offers few opinions or ideas on how to eliminate racial disparities in health care.

Eloquently Written ~ Exquisitely Told

YES!!! If you've ever taken a road trip on a motorcycle, or have ever dreamt of doing so, you will absolutely love this book. Ted Simon has provided a written account in prose, using eloquent yet playful vocabulary. Rupert Degas does a wonderful job narrating Ted's work.

Ted's journey is so descriptive that a detailed picture forms in the mind, providing a transcendent experience.

I loved this book, and would highly recommend it for anyone interested in exotic journeys.

It's a lot more than a story, a lot more!

I have read many travel books, but Ted Simon is the best. I simply loved it. I was in a state of shock and awe just listening to the best English writing I have ever come across. Ted you are fantastic!!

When it was actually cool.

I first ran across this book in 2001, when I work at a bookstore that catered to Travelers.

This edition had Ted on his battered Triumph.

"Four Years Around the World on a Triumph"

I never picked it up to read but I often found myself staring at the cover wishing it was me. I knew at some point in my life I would read this book with the hopes of relating it to my own adventures...more importantly my own life.

15 years later, in the form of an MP3, that time came. Mr. Simon is a master of vivid and heartfelt description. His monumental journey has finally become a part of my imagination.

The least adventurous adventure book

I typically love adventure travel books, but this one disappointed me. There were many times were the book grew dull and difficult to get through. Ted Simon spends more time writing about his deep thoughts than he does describing the journey and the places he visits. I loved long way down and long way round, which were inspired by Jupiters travels, because they were descriptive and made you feel like you were along for the ride.

Kept my interest

You Can Come Back

This is Katie Beer's horrific story of years of family abuse before she spent sixteen days kept locked in a box and being raped by a family friend at nine years old.

You wouldn't think anyone could recover Katie not only recovers but thrives. Told in alternating narratives Katie on the inside, co-author reporter Carolyn Gusoff on the out. You get the raw story and how it played out in public and in the law. Narrators Allyson Ryan and Eileen Stevens give this story the respect it deserves without turning maudlin.

With help from the system that had, until then, failed her, she overcomes what feels like the worst possible circumstances. Help from therapy and school, and support from a loving foster family bring her through.

Contemplating human cruelty and endurance, it's heartening to know that we can be this resilient and flourish.

Disturbing

While the story is indeed disturbing, it is told in such a way that it becomes intriguing. An excellent "read" but not appropriate for teenagers or probably any young mothers.

A tough women with a tough life, yet very enlightening.

Every time something good happens in Maude's life something tragic would be up next. Her story of perseverance and dedication to her values and beliefs are amazing. As a whole her life's story is unremarkable, however the way she persevered through loss after loss, struggling through the depression and troubled marriages, is inspiring and shows depth in the life of all of us.

I found myself analyzing my life while reading this hoping that I'm not the type of husband that George was. I'm trying to be a good son like her Gene was.

The narration was excellent and made the book that much more enjoyable to listen to.

Almost an autobiography

This book is so amazing, it was written by Maude's granddaughter but feels like an autobiography due to the detail of emotional honesty.

It was really interesting -and sad- to hear this lady's journey through life that included so much death and poverty but somehow she kept going. One of my favorite parts of the story is how her mother in law tried to kill her and still she lived under the same roof as her. Eventually the old lady died of the flu, the whole time staring Maude down with hate as she wiped vomit off her. Later, she feels the urge to kill her own daughter in law, even though she lived through the same treatment!

The whole story shows you that if we are being honest, none of us is perfect, we are all human and flawed. Even the strongest and hardest working among us. I think this is a great story of human spirit and endurance. I loved it!

Narration made listening almost unbearable

I loved this story but the narrator was so, so bad. Her halting way of speaking and at times complete lack of inflection, made it like I was listening to a beginning reader. She went in and out of some type of Southern "Scarlett O'Hara" accent to no accent at all and it was super distracting. I can't imagine how anyone heard this and thought it was fine. If I hadn't liked the story so much, I don't think I could've endured it.

Outstanding Story!

This was not just a great story it was a great life lesson as well! One that should be encouraged in the schools so that our children can see how blessed they are in the times they were brought up. Even now for people to see the struggles that others have gone through is very important. Mod had a tough life and dealt with many tough situations and felt like she was a failure, but I see her failures as strength in character. She shows that life is not a fairytale for anyone and requires grit, determination, sympathy and sometimes the ability to say I'm done.

What a wonderful story!

It was very hard to but this book down. From the first paragraph to the last, I hated:for it to end! It's awesomely written & narrated.
