Winter, 1916: in St Petersburg, Russia, on the brink of revolution. Outside the Smolny Institute for Noble Young Ladies, an English governess is waiting for her young charge to be released from school. But so are the Tsar's secret police....
Beautiful and headstrong, Sashenka Zeitlin is just 16. As her mother parties with Rasputin and her dissolute friends, Sashenka slips into the frozen night to play her part in a dangerous game of conspiracy and seduction.
Twenty years on, Sashenka has a powerful husband with whom she has two children. Around her, people are disappearing, but her own family is safe. But she's about to embark on a forbidden love affair which will have devastating consequences.
Sashenka's story lies hidden for half a century, until a young historian goes deep into Stalin's private archives and uncovers a heartbreaking tale of passion and betrayal, savage cruelty and unexpected heroism - and one woman forced to make an unbearable choice.

    Ridiculous reading
The reader embarked on a ridiculous attempt to portray a supposedly Russian accent, which turned out to be standup-comedian-like. Next time I hope the book will be read with less stereotypes and silly condescendence to the Russian culture that Montefiore attempts to portray.
    Sashenka
A truly wonderful novel, which just cries out to be listed to again. A literary masterpiece

A fun book for learning about US History
"Patriot Courage: A story about the Boston Tea Party" by Al Rocca is the story of two best friends, Peter and Daniel, living in the years leading up to the Revolutionary War. I gained a lot of knowledge about the Boston Tea Party from this book, and had much more fun while learning it than I would have had while reading a textbook. I think books like this are a great way to interest kids in learning about history because they can relate to the experiences of kids their age, rather than just the adults involved. I know this from experience, as I used to read numerous books about fictional children who lived in the US during different historical periods. This review was written by Bryce G.
Learn history while enjoying a good story!
Take it from this elementary school librarian, this book is a perfect way to dive into early American history. It's a must for every fifth grade classroom. 'Love the primary source documents listed at the end of the book.
    Patriot Courage Historical Fiction
Though this book is great for any history enthusiast, it is geared toward a younger audience and is written simply. It transitions into the story of the infamous Boston tea party. It is excellent for sneaking in facts that are crucial for that period in history. I would recommend as a great read for younger readers.
    for children and adults
Read this to your child and discuss it. Make more sense out of what is happening today with the current tea party movement. Make them aware of the historical perspective which they might not be learning in school (K-college!). History repeats itself!

Duración: 13 hrs and 18 mins
    Idioma: Español
    Fecha de publicación: 11-15-17
    Editor: Planeta Colombia

    Publisher's Summary:
Noted author Dan Wakefield's most famous novel seethes with pent-up frustration and confusion, and nearly every episode bubbles with hilarity. This novel of the 1950s so perfectly captures its time and place that it transcends the specific and becomes universal - a true classic of American literature. In true testament to that fact, Wakefield later penned the screenplay for the 1997 motion picture version of Going All the Way starring Ben Affleck.

    The Key
A good little tale set in Indianapolis by an Indianapolis writer. The author graduated from Shortridge HS in Indianapolis in 1950. He drew his material; from those times. Being a Hoosier and knowing Indianapolis I enjoyed the book very much. Young men trying to figure out what to do with their lives. One a HS athlete (a hero) and the other brought into the fold after HS. I enjoyed the story and the writer wrote it well. Kept me interested.
If you a man tha t was youn man in the 1950s.
The book is interesting to a man that was a young man in the 1950s. It was raw but the ending left a feeling it was not complete.
    Not my cup of tea
    Or
Sorry but I just couldn't get interested in the protagonist, a self absorbed and rather dense young man without any redeeming qualities that I could see.

Just wasn't what I like to read.....my bad.

The word "predictable" is not pejorative. The author took the reader from points A to B in a perfectly plausible story arc. I'm enamored with the time period, and Wakefield presents a worthy evocation of an era when the glow of America's victory in World War II gave way to the ambiguity of Korea and the Cold War. All in all, a mature and thought-provoking book.

In 1381, Wat, the Tyler, and the peasants he represented urged of the king of England that serfdom should be abolished, the right of all to market their goods publicly should be allowed, the price of good land should not be over four pennies an acre, and that all past offenses should be pardoned. Instead of presenting their requests in a respectful manner, they took to the streets of East Anglia, Kent, and London. Although their demands were certainly reasonable, their methods were not. It's just okay.
Was okay. It didn't quite fit on the bottom and so it bothered me. I took it off and am using a different cover. It might suffice for someone who isn't as an picky.
    Wonderful Historical Account
GA Henty does a marvelous job in describing the times of King Richard's early reign and the resulting conflict. This tale of two young men who gain uncommon blessings by their valiant deeds is skillfully entwined with an accurate historical account that gives the reader a good, rounded feel and perspective on that era. A superb retelling. Drawn artistically, with perilous adventures, sparks of romance, and virtuous characters scattered throughout, A March on London will tug at your heartstrings and endear this time in history to you in a way like never before.

    Refreshing and imaginative
Mr Ganci breathes new life into some lesser known, but intriguing stories from the Old Testament.
His retelling builds on the established account and adds historical insight and reasonable connections between locations, people, and events.
The colorful linguistic imagery magnifies the reader's (listener's) experience. I frequently felt myself smiling as phrases were particularly refreshing.
Mr Bernson's performance was solid. His voice contributed to an overall enjoyable experience.

Scent of Triumph, a story of strenght and bravery
Jan Moran has a way of writing that brings out your emotions, she draws you into her story so that you feel you are there as a silent bystander watching as the story unfolds. This is my third book I have read from this author, can't wait to read another one of her books.
Epic love story with a bold and passionate heroine.
I didn't want this book to end. Danielle is a heroic woman and someone who triumphs over grief, loss and tragedy. She always had a sense of honor and the will to do the right thing even when circumstances were against her.
This book could have been 1/3rd longer and I would have loved to savor and linger in it. The author's skill in using the five senses immerse the reader into the story. Danielle is passionate about her family and her work. I learned a lot about the perfume business and all of the details added to the atmosphere of the story. I was transported with Danielle from war torn Europe to the glory days of Hollywood and Beverly Hills. All through her tumultuous life, she never gives up hope of seeing her beloved son. And then, there is the love of her life, a man whose timing is never quite right, but redeems himself at the end when he boldly pursues and hangs onto her. An epic love story with a bold and passionate heroine. Bravo!
Breathtaking! You won't want to put it down...
Wow! I came across Scent of Triumph through the Goodreads grapevine. I enjoy historical fiction and have recently been branching out into more types, but I will admit that I wasn't too keen about a book set during WWII. However, the premise of the book was intriguing, given the way scents and smells play a large role in the story and how they affect our memories. And I will admit, the 99-cent sale caught my eye so I thought I would give it a go. I was not prepared to be as blown away by the story as I was. Jan Moran's ability to weave scents and smells into the fabric of the story is masterful! I was afraid that it would seem stilted or forced, but there is nothing more natural -- I even began to feel like I could smell some of the scents myself. I don't know about the rest of you, but there are definitely smells that instantly take me back to memories from my childhood or even just a few years ago.
