Certainly uncertain

Characters that often name three or four feelings before settling - well, not always - on one. Descriptions of actions that may or may not have happened. Vague references to never detailed inter dimensional and magical battles, while the characters spend most of their time in New York City, small town Texas, or unknown earthly locations. Well written enjoyable read about (mostly female) guardians of the earth that leaves one wanting more.

Promising, but unfulfilled

This strange novel can be entertaining at times, but it's ultimately frustrating and pointless.

Decent escapism

This had an imaginative structure and premise, and plenty of action scenes. Somehow, I still didn't get into it. Maybe the next book by this author will be more to my taste...

Unique time hopping melancholy mystical fantasy

I liked it a lot though I'm not sure I understand it! Witty and self-aware, back and forth in time and thru various characters' eyes, there is something fresh and refreshing about the writing and the experience of reading this. A real treat!

Good idea, bad execution

The book is original and has a lot of potential. Unfortunately the characters are undeveloped, so you never care about them. The narrative constantly shifts between characters and time periods making it hard to keep track of what is going on. It's a great concept with a poor execution.

A different kind of faery tale - these characters will stay with you.

A lively romp, both big and small, with indelible characters scattered across this world and Maeve's. This is the kind of earnest faery a kid dreams of after placing their tooth under their pillow. Read this novel and it will surely conjure up childhood summer adventures and possibly give a little hope to cynical adults that someone or some creature out there has your back.

A charming, uplifting blend of magic and realism

Iâll be honest â as a contributing writer of this book, I am slightly biased! However, I wanted to write a review anyway because it really does deserve a look. Pillow Talk is an atypical book â part fantasy, part autobiography, part history. While it is most definitely a work of fiction, some of the most surprising and unusual events in the story are based on facts. Books have been written about tooth fairies before, but the story of Maeve Faedent, the tooth retrieval faery, and her loyal human friends is not just a light and fluffy piece of fun but an inspiring tale of life, replete with all of lifeâs usual challenges. Women take charge of their lives and a boy becomes much more than his upbringing suggested he could be. While Maeve is the central, unifying force of the novel, the other characters are strong and important in their own right. In short, Pillow Talk is a fun, unusual and uplifting read.

INCOMPLETE: Contains only 3 books in a series of 4

The AYESHA or SHE series by H. Rider Haggard is truly fantastic in every sense of that word. Filled with jungle adventure, danger, suspense, romance, mysticism, reincarnation, and the supernatural, the series also has a strong female protagonist. It is well-written, and highly-entertaining escapist fiction. BUT...

The complete series consists of FOUR books, not just the THREE contained here (and, for the record, those three do not constitute a trilogy). In order of initial publication, the four books are:

(1) SHE

(2) AYESHA: THE RETURN OF SHE

(3) SHE AND ALLAN

(4) WISDOM'S DAUGHTER (Missing)

That last one, not included in this set, MAY have some copyright issues in the U.S., that being POSSIBLY why it was omitted. Nevertheless, it should have at least been mentioned so as not to give the (false) impression the series consists only of the three books included here (and incorrectly called the "Ayesha Trilogy" on the front cover). Because of that deception, and because this set is incomplete, I have rated it 3-stars. Had this set honestly explained it provided only 3 of 4 titles and did not try to pass those 3 off as a completed trilogy, I'd have rated it 4-stars. Had it contained all four books, however, I'd have rated it 5-stars (which the FOUR stories in toto deserve).

Happily, a complete, 5-star set of all 4 books in the AYESHA series is available in the Kindle Store from Timeless Wisdom. Titled SHE: THE FOUR NOVELS, it also costs only $.99 and that is the set I would recommend to all those who wish to read the entire fabulous series. In my review for that edition I briefly told about each of the four books (something too long to repeat here). Needed some fleshing out.

This book could have been really good, but fell short of that for me because of a few glaring mistakes, and just not enough background. Too many things that are really important to the storyline, are not only unexplained, but ignored. I won't give any spoilers. It's a good premise for a story,and it does have several redeeming features. The characters, other than the heroine, were interesting and it's a shame the author didn't go into more detail about who and what some of them were.

The main complaint I have about the story is that the heroine of the piece is ridiculously wishy/washy. One minute she is insecure, the next, full of confidence, for no apparent reason. She is "in love" with someone, then ready to give him up to fulfill her destiny, (with no real turmoil to speak of); again, without enough reason, or anything happening to explain this abrupt change of heart.

There are also too many instances where the transition between points of view is abrupt, and sometimes makes no sense to the story, (again, not enough info.)

One of my pet peeves in a story is tying up all the loose ends in a neat little package, without enough information to let the reader understand how, exactly we ended up, "Happy ever after".

The bottom line is that there were so many holes in this story, it sunk, (at least for me).

I gave it a 3* rating for it's potential. I hope the author will go back someday and write the Whole story. That would be well worth reading!

A Fast Paced and Interesting Read

Fallenwood turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise for me. I downloaded it while it was free on Amazon to read during a readathon because it seemed like it'd be a short and fairly interesting read, and it turned out to be a fantastic read that I would have been more than willing to pay for. The author has quite the imagination and I look forward to reading more from her.

The summary seem to promise a fairly standard tale, girl has some personal issues and ends up submersed in a world she didn't know existed. But this turned out to be quite different than what I was originally expecting. The main character, Ashley, does have some personal problems rooted in the death of her stepfather but it's not something that she just happens to overcome as soon as things start to change for her. It's major part of her character and she actually finds a way to coupe, it's not something magically disappears. The writing is fluid and has a unique fantasy flair to it that makes it feel like a different sort of reading experience.

A very interesting book which is partly for children but with very advanced explanations of all things spacial. I think it will appeal to highly intelligent young people.

A Unique Blend of Science and Imagination

the author does a brilliant job of incorporating scientific fact with folklore and legend in this very engaging tale. It is a story that will appeal to youngsters who already have an interest in science, but may also inspire others to learn more about both the scientific as well as the natural world. There is an excellent glossary at the back of the book for inquiring minds who may not understand certain words and phrases used in the text.

Request for More!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characterization, vocabulary, evident research and depth of portrayal of the human spirit place this author in high standing for this genre. My only disappointment was that these are entirely new characters and apparently a new writing direction for Lorina Stephens and she hasn't as yet done any others in this style. Upon finishing the book, I wanted to find one or two similar writings by her, but regrettably, there are none... Lorina, please grace us with another.

Nice quick read

A jealous ruler, a banished advisor, a misunderstood gift and a country being destroyed from within. Lorina Stephen's From Mountains of Ice is a lovingly told story of rebellion and sacrifice, of love and fear.

In the 10 years since Sylvio's banishment from the court of the young Prince Carmelo, he has made a life for himself and his wife Aletta in a rural village. Able to relax away from the problems of state, Sylvio would like nothing more than to retire to a quiet life of making bows by hand. A gifted bone speaker, he creates bows of the bones of the recently deceased. These bows speak to their users, and supernaturally protect their homelands. LOVE THIS BOOK

LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! A fresh voice for YA!! Loved the twists and turns, the story was complex and not formulaic as I sometimes feel YA can be. Can't wait for the second book!

thumbs up for me

i found it really interesting and a different take on the whole witch concept. River got quite annoying sometimes with her internal conflict but the ending made up for this i think. i loved that it didnt have the very typical ending of happily ever after. i would recommend it. i was curious as to what happened to "it" after that one scene though and how exactly River had changed.

The cover is stunning. The story; however, is stereotypical and problematic af at times that I finally gave up.
