A refreshing change from zombies

Disclosure: I received this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review

While zombie stories are all the rage right now, this is the story about a "new" ghost, Veronika, who quickly learns this isn't the afterlife she'd imagined. Talk about culture shock... getting used to the various creatures she encounters is a whole new experience. Veronika is in her early twenties at the time of her demise and the narrator does a great job of giving this sassy twenty-something a voice. This story and narration reminded me alot of Ellen Muth's character in the TV series "Dead Like Me" (about another twenty-something who finds herself amongst reapers and other unsavory characters). Fun audiobook for folks who enjoy listening to irreverent ghost stories.

Lady ghost takes on supernatural nasties.

Veronica Cain is a tough lady ghost, who kicks some serious supernatural butt. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. Ms. Boling is an excellent narrator. If I didn't know better, I would think Veronica herself was reading the story.

It was a fast read, but when I was done it felt very incomplete. It's very much a middle of the story kind of book. Will leave you thinking where's the rest? When you get done.

Terrific Book 4 In an Awesome Series

This is exactly why I read swords & sorcery: action, solid writing, inventive worlds, and above all, a hero whose actually heroic. Rypel pushes up the action and carnage in this book. The greater plot concerning multiple worlds, hinted at in the Deathwind Trilogy, is made explicit here and developed in typically cool fashion. Good, good stuff that should be on every S&S fan's shelf (or in their e-reader)

I read the other listed books of this author, which are just great, and I want to find the last one to satisfy my curiosity and complete my collection! These books are the fines series of fantasy (sword and sorcery) I ever read and I read many.

A wonderful reading experience!

N.K. Schlaudecker has proven her skills as a writer with this book. I will be reading more of her work. As a fan and visitor of Scotland, England and Orkney, this was a fascinating read. The story progressed in such a manner that it was hard to put down and the characters literally sprang to life in my mind. Even though the time line is from King Arthur's crowning this book is not over run with historical facts that are not pertinent to the story. One of the best books I have bought and well worth more than the current price!!

From a true storyteller!

Mayhawk: Rising by Nicole Kay Schlaudecker is an exciting story that quickly draws the reader into the action. The author has created an Arthurian tale populated by interesting characters and does a good job making us care about them. She also uses drama and action to keep us turning the pages. Her greatest strength may be setting scenes and moods that convey a sense of the period, making the reader feel like we are there. Looking forward to more from Schlaudecker. Recommended read.

I received this copy in order to write an honest review

Very enjoyable read

I really enjoyed this read and I really do want to know what happens next from this author's point of view. I want to read the next chapter of Arthur and Gawain and Merlin. The writing style flowed well and reminded me somewhat of Jack Whyte's style, which I enjoy, but more condensed. I personally liked the use of the Scots language for Gawain and his countrymen.

A good read!

Amazing story

From start to finish, this is a beautifully told tale that captures the essence of the period as it transports readers back to King Arthur's beginnings. I recommend this book to anyone who has a love of Arthur, historical fiction, or just a brilliantly crafted read.

An awesome fall into enjoyment

The Fall of Awesome is a fun romp through the often-overlooked world of superhero fiction. TFoA takes a look at a regular person's foibles when he is given super-human abilities. This once-ordinary guy is now the world's most powerful being - or so it appears - and his facade of super heroism is cracking. This super being is susceptible to the same very human traits as you and me; jealousy, anger, disappointment, temptation, greed, and employing and falling prey to deception. When a being has all the power he wants and is generally known for doing Good... what becomes of him when he harbors all those terrible Human emotions? The Fall tells the story of Awesome's descent into normalcy amidst a very strange and dangerous assault on his city by a new bad guy, seemingly bent on the takedown of all the heroic Supers in the city.

The story is good, generally well written with the occasional "oh, that must be explained in other stories" gap in intrinsic knowledge, and is a fun, light read.

Goodman is quickly becoming a favorite Indie read

This book is heartfelt, intriguing and warm. This book is the most human sci-fi book I've ever read. A father willing to take his life to save his daughter's, ends up being transported into a robot of his own making. Throughout the story, we get to experience the father's regrets, hopes and fears firsthand as he races against the clock to save his mortality and to, again, save the life of his daughter. Truly heartfelt but also extremely sensitive, this book will be a "read again" for me, which is huge since the "to read" list keeps growing. T.R. Goodman is quickly becoming a favorite Indie read. Give this wonderful book a read and a review. It's well worth it.

Really unique story! It was a little strange - but definitely keeps your interest from beginning to end. Very steam punk

fiction. If you don't know what that means you just have to read it because I can't even explain it. The entire story is very creative

and inventive and has mysteries you probably will not completely figure out until the end. I really enjoyed it.

His otherworldly stories are infused with humanity in a way that one quickly cares and wants to know more about his characters. A truly talented writer, Goodman creates characters who are neither black nor white, neither likable or loathable, but very human, flawed and interesting.

My Name Is Michael Bishop is a book that deals with very tough issues: loss, mourning and the lengths people will go for their children. The main character muses on the lengths he will go for his daughter when a mysterious magical illness threatens to take her life.

Enthralling and an excellent reading

Where does Deathless rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I'm not a huge fan of magical fantasy, but Deathless is a definite exception.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Deathless?

The main female character, throughout the story. So human, despite her surroundings.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A literally warts-and-all re-imagining of life as it is lived when magic infuses the world.

Valente invokes the old style of fairytales without sounding clichéd. Original and thoroughly enjoyable. This is one audio-book that I am very likely to listen to again. So much happens and the reading is so enjoyable. A real pleasure.

An aside - I want an anadi doll.

It's been a while since I've read/listened to this, so bear with me...

This was my first audio book ever, and it did not disappoint. I really emphasized with the main character, and the narration was clear, with very good voices for the eperu (neuter) characters. There's a twist ending, but I personally liked it. It shows how complex the main character is, and how difficult the situation that they were born into is.

Rounding out the Jokka world

The sweetness of this tale is definitely offset by the brutal awareness of the main character's place in the world, which hovers over every word. The ending is happy, yet there's a shadow over it because of the struggle that we witness in the main character's heart and mind. It is a very good tale, and if you enjoy the Jokka, or are looking for a place to begin to learn, I would recommend this story.

Heart-Tugging and Engaging

A late night whim that I deeply enjoyed, even if it was the bittersweet sort of looking in that the Jokka series always gives. A wonderful tale, but not a pick-me-up or a good introduction for new viewers, so start with The Worth of a Shell if you're new to this world.

Twisty Jokka Tale

This particular tale starts out in a way that's unexpected for the Jokka stories, with an anadi who was happy to be anadi, and upset that she wouldn't be any more, and finishes with a *different* unexpected twist at the end.

The *only* reason this one gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that the twist seemed sort of abrupt when I'd been expecting/hoping for something else, though after mulling it over a little, it makes sense, and I think it fits well into the world the author has built with previous stories.

(And for some reason I can't put my finger on, I find it utterly charming that Jekun ended up in the garden. It seems fitting somehow.)

A Beautiful Read

As a long-time fan of the Jokka stories, this is one I've been waiting for a long time to read and it was well worth it. This is a very different look at these alien people, reversing many of the common themes in this setting. I read Jekun's story with a lump in my throat the whole way through and more than a little bit of envy by the end. If you've been reading the Jokka stories, this one sheds more light on these wonderful people and is well worth the read!

I would have liked it if I could've heard what he was saying. I like Edgar Allan Poe stories. It would've been read much better if he was just plain talking. Any recommendation on a better audio version? I will delete this one. I was very disappointed.
