    Title: Mile 81
    Author: Stephen King
Narrator: Thomas Sadoski, Edward Herrmann, Craig Wasson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-22-12
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 23 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
A Stephen King original short story featuring an excerpt from 11.22.63, his latest full-length novel.
With the heart of Stand by Me and the genius horror of Christine, Mile 81 is Stephen King unleashing his imagination as he drives past one of those road signs.... At Mile 81 on the Maine Turnpike is a boarded-up rest stop, a place where high-school kids drink and get into the kind of trouble high-school kids have always gotten into. Its the place where Pete Simmons goes when his older brother heads off to the gravel pit to play paratroopers over the side. Pete, armed with only the magnifying glass he got for his 10th birthday, finds a discarded bottle of vodka in the boarded up burger shack and drinks enough to pass out. Thats why he doesnt notice a freshly mud-spattered station wagon (which is strange because there hadnt been any rain in New England for over a week), which veers into the Mile 81 rest area, ignoring the sign that reads closed, no services. The drivers door opens but nobody gets out....
In the bonus story The Dune, originally published in Grantas October 2011 horror issue, retired Florida Supreme Court Judge Harvey Beecher tells his lawyer about a mysterious sand dune on an unnamed island a short distance off the Gulf coastline of his familys property. Harvey first visited the island at the age of 10 in 1932, after his grandfather, a scoundrel and land speculator whod created the family fortune, told him Blackbeards treasure might be buried there. Travelling to the island became a daily addiction for Harvey and now his lawyer is about to discover the shocking reason why.

More suited to an early teen audience maybe
The Family Guy episode where Stephen King pitches a story about a "lamp monster" to his publisher springs to mind, except this one is about a station wagon that eats people.
King has produced some excellent novels and novellas in his prolific career, although I'm afraid Mile 81 just isn't one of them. Sorry.
    nice

    Title: The Trials of Rumpole
    Author: John Mortimer
    Narrator: Frederick Davidson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-02-12
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
Horace Rumpolewho never prosecutes, whose fame rests on an infinite knowledge of blood and typewriters, whose court scenes are proverbial, whose home is ruled by Mrs. Rumpole (She Who Must Be Obeyed)is back on the defense, as irreverent, as iconoclastic, as claret-swilling, poetry-spouting, impudent, witty, and cynical as ever.
This time the judge-debunking barrister-at-law is embroiled with a minister accused of shoplifting, an actress accused of murder, and a racist candidate for Parliament, with art theft and mistaken identity thrown in for good measure. The result is a delightful excursion into hidden corners of the British judicial system, served up in typically colorful Rumpole style.
Stories include: "Rumpole and the Man of God", "Rumpole and the Showfolk", "Rumpole and the Fascist Beast", "Rumpole and the Case of Identity", "Rumpole and the Course of True Love", and "Rumpole and the Age for Retirement."
    Critic Reviews:
Rumpole has been an inspired stroke of good fortune for us all. (Daily Mail, London)

    I like the Rumpole stories...
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
but I really prefer Robert Hardy's performance. Having said that, I will listen to this book again. This is the second collection of Rumpole stories, and if you enjoyed the first book, there is no reason you won't like these. because Horace Rumpole is here in all his subversive glory! A true advocate, Rumpole believes that every defendant is entitled to a vigorous defense, even if they are a member of the Timson clan. To that end, he continues to actively resist the efforts of his wife and fellow members of chambers to become a judge, "take silk," or retire: he wants to continue to be "Rumpole of the Bailey:" drinker of plonk, smoker of cheap cigars and wearing of disreputable hats!
A pompous and exaggerated actor ruins the story
I like Rumpole, but was completely turned off by the pompousover-acting. The actor exaggerated every Edward intern of speech, it was unpleasant to listen to, and entirely squashed the gentle irony of the story

    Weak
I am a very big fan of short stories and have listened to the Selected Shorts program for over 20 years. These stories were good, but none were really great. The reader were all quite good, but the stories were not my cup of tea. The American Classics is my favorite volume of stories so far.

What about the narratorss performance did you like?
Best I've heard, and I've heard plenty! Inflections superb, tone magnificent....very colorful, every one! I want more!
Who was the most memorable character of Selected Shorts: New American Stories and why?

Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
In Session, from international best seller M.J. Rose, features the return of Dr. Morgan Snow, in a brand-new story collection!
As a therapist specializing in sexual issues, psychiatrist Dr. Morgan Snow isn't easily shocked or shaken, as readers and listeners of the popular "Butterfield Institute" novels know. There are times, however, when the need for her services leads her out of the office... and into unfamiliar worlds.
In these stories, the therapist matches her wits - and her training - against three men of mystery: Jack Reacher, John Rain, and Cotton Malone. These characters are, of course, familiar to listeners as the creations, respectively, of New York Times best-selling authors Lee Child, Barry Eisler, and Steve Berry. All three swore that their characters would never agree to therapy - unless Rose found a way to get them there. And she did.
In "Extenuating Circumstances" with Steve Berry's Cotton Malone, a woman seeks help for her lover, and sends Dr. Snow overseas on a most unusual house call.
In "Decisions, Decisions", Barry Eisler's John Rain forces Dr. Snow out of her own comfort zone, and into the world of a former patient's worst nightmare.
And in "Knowing You're Alive", with Lee Child's Jack Reacher, there are revelations for both the injured Dr. Snow and her unexpected savior/patient.
Note that this book uses the actual narrators from each character's respective series (Phil Gigante/Natalie Ross: Dr. Morgan Snow; Scott Brick: Cotton Malone; Barry Eisler: John Rain; Dick Hill Jack Reacher).
All the proceeds of the audiobook and a share of the proceeds of the ebook will be donated to David Baldacci's Wish You Well Foundation, supporting family literacy. (wishyouwellfoundation.org/)
These characters are the creations, respectively, of New York Times best-selling authors Lee Child, Barry Eisler, and Steve Berry, and are used with their full knowledge and participation.
BONUS AUDIO: Audible interviews author M.J. Rose.
    Critic Reviews:
"Jack Reacher, John Rain and Cotton Malone, on the sex therapist's couch. Testosterone therapy as high art. What could be better? One of the most original and well-done series of stories I've ever read. M.J. Rose has blasted this baby to the ozone. I don't care if you download it or listen to it. just get it." (David Baldacci)
"When John Rain considers taking on Dr. Morgan Snow as a client, the danger isn't winding up in a coffin - it's winding up on the couch. But I made him take the risk anyway, and it was a blast!" (Barry Eisler)

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 45 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
Noir contains three classic thrillers by Richard Matheson, the grand master of suspense. Originally published in the 1950s, at the very beginning of Mathesons distinguished career, these page-turning classics are finally on audio for your listening pleasure. Now listeners everywhere can savor three unforgettable tales of crime, corruption, and cold-blooded murder.
    "Someone Is Bleeding"
Dave Newton has fallen hard for Peggy, a leggy blonde with a lurid past and a heartbreaking smile. But as bloody corpses begin to litter his path, Dave is forced to confront the terrifying possibility that the woman he loves is a deranged killer.
In the wee hours of a fateful Sunday morning, a homicidal maniac embarks on a rampage of terror and violence that threatens everyone who crosses his path, culminating in a deadly confrontation in a Manhattan apartment building.
    "Ride the Nightmare"
Chris and Helen have the perfect suburban lifeuntil Helen discovers her husbands guilty secret. Overnight, their peaceful existence descends into a vortex of fear and brutality that may cost them the life of their only child.
    Critic Reviews:
The author who influenced me the most as a writer was Richard Matheson. (Stephen King)
    Members Reviews:
Not quite what I expected, and I expected more
Compared to novels like "Stir of Echoes", these felt long and drawn out. I love the economy of language used in all three, however whether the narrator or the protrayal of women, these feel dated. Listening to them, I can understand why they've been out of print for so long.
Each tale is about Regular Guy thrown into incredible situations - and reacting to them in ways that to modern folks seem unsophisticated or slow.
Someone is Bleeding is Regular Guy doesn't know when how to walk away from Crazy.
Fury on Sunday is Regular Guy trapped with escaped Crazy
Ride the Nightmare is regular Guy's past catches up to his happy home.
In every situation, Regular Guy can't seem to get out of his own way, making every wrong choice and compounding it with more wrong choices. It was tiring.
However, I'm glad I read them and while they weren't what I was expecting it was good to get a little more Matheson under my belt.
Narrator wise, Robertson Dean would not have been my first choice. Character inflection aside, his deep, resonating voice made the stories feel heavier than they probably were. This is one of those rare cases where physically reading the book may be to the Reader's advantage.
Still struggling to get halfway, really bad
Okay there is no character development, I'd like to kill myself with an ice pick listening to this. I have 7 more hours to go and I hate the two main characters! Story theme is weak again no character development, over describe the wrong things, I mean stale whiskey scent? Really... Oh pass on this unless you are desperate, as I was. I own over 240 audible books alone, not sure how many before this, I'm a thriller reader, this is not a thriller.
    Great Storytelling, Genius Writer
Timeless story expertly crafted, written long before cellphones and computers, still as relevant and riveting as the day it was written.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore needs no introduction. Poet, author, artist, playwright, musician, philosopher, Nobel laureate, and above all, an Indian.
He created so much of what it means to be an Indian today: our national anthem, Santiniketan, Rabindra Sangeet, stories of several Satyajit Ray films. The spiritual and emotional beauty of his elegant prose and magical poetry was beautifully captured in his stunningly beautiful short stories. Many of us have read the translations. Listening to them in Bengali, however brings out a beauty that is perhaps... lost in translation.
This two-volume collection has some of Gurudev's great short stories. We, at booksTALK, hope this will be only the first step in bringing out many such works in Indian languages. To make it possible to reconnect to our roots - of language, literature and storytelling.
The stories in this volume are: "Kabuliwallah", "Ramkanai-er Nirbuddhita", "Postmaster", "Streer Potro", "Jibito O Mrito", "Namonjur Golpo", and "Thakurda- Khokababur Protyaborton".
Please note: this title is in Bengali.

    Love the J.D. series
If you enjoy gross but funny cop stories, listening to J.A. Konrath books read by Hill and Dawe are a must. I wonder where Konrath comes up with some of the gross detail and yet he can be so very witty. You will cringe and laugh at these short stories. It is a nice touch to have personal notes by Konrath attached to each story.
    Fantastic
Love the gritty, dirty nature of these stories with the humanization of the characters. It's lovable and believable. Home run!
    Love Jack Daniels stories
Love the humor in these stories. The narration makes them work at times, and the banter between Jack and Herb is well worth the listen. I've listened to or read all the Jack Daniels mysteries and if you like them, you won't want to miss this collection. These give us a better understanding of the character Phin, as there are several of his stories included.
    A amusing group of stories
Some are funny, disturbing, interesting, thrilling, etc. or a combination of those. I enjoyed it.
