Stories - Excellent / Narration - Halfway There
I love the premise of this collection, and for the most part it is well executed. The individual works are characteristic of the the four writers, and if you are familiar with and like them already, you will enjoy this. Simon Prebble did a nice job of narration as well. However, he only narrated two of the stories. The other two narrations were much less enjoyable. For some reason, the woman who narrated the Mary Balogh story said the word "lover" as if she was taking part in a Saturday Night Live sketch. It was distracting, annoying, and unnecessary. I took off a star for this.
    Another great one, but...
I loved this book, except for one thing...I took off one star for the female narrator. They should have let Simon Prebble read the whole thing instead of only 2 of the 4 stories, because (in my opinion) the woman who read the other two did a horrible job. You could hardly tell one character from another, and she over-acted everything. If you can get past that, you will enjoy it too.
Variety of Stories with the Same Theme!
All talented authors, but I liked the second story, by Mary Balogh, the best. The stories were enhances by the performances of both Simon Prebble and Anne Flosnik.
THE THEME: A handsome hero returns from war, battle-scarred and world-weary. But family duty calls and he must find a bride.
A young lady facing yet another season without a suitor never expects to find herself the object of his affections.
    Loved It!
I was very happy with this purchase! I own everything Stephanie Laurens and Mary Balogh have written so I knew I would love their stories. Was surprised and pleased with the other two authors and will look into purchasing some of their books. All the stories flowed very well and were very entertaining. I really liked finding out what 4 different authors did with the same set of circumstances. It was very enjoyable and a very easy listen. ENJOY!
    A nice book of novellas
I enjoyed this group of novellas, although some more than others. The narration was good and easy to
    Listen to.

    some stories made no sense
even after listening to the stories over again, the ones that made no sense, it still did not make any sense so I did not appreciate that. I've listened to all of Linda fairstein audio books and totally enjoyed them all, but this mystery writers audio book was not as great as I thought it would be with stories
    from different authors
    No Reasonable Doubt Here
I know, we're supposed to hear all the evidence before we reach a decision . . . but I felt morally compelled to stop when I realized, after the first story, that I'd be returning the book to the Penitentiary of Refunds.
It was. . an implausible, uninteresting story made up of cartoon-like characters lacking in even rudimentary skills of deduction. The idea that an editor would select such a yarn, from the hundreds or thousands available, is bad enough. To put it first in the series of stories is astoundingly bad judgment.
Not sure what it means, but I also found it a bit peculiar that although the editor is described as being a best-selling author of legal thrillers, my search on audible found nothing under her name but this sad volume.

Not his best stories and not the greatest reader
What did you like best about Guy de Maupassant: Selected Stories? What did you like least?
Occasional good story. Really bad reader(s).
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    N/A
What didnt you like about the narratorss performance?
Very stilted, annoying Boston or Bronx accent.
Could you see Guy de Maupassant: Selected Stories being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    N/A
    Any additional comments?
Yeah, don't let this guy read anymore. From the reader of "The Horla", anyway. It was so disturbing listening to his plodding, badly-accented speech that it really took any enjoyment away from the story.
    Excellent stories ruined.
What disappointed you about Guy de Maupassant: Selected Stories?
Such excellent stories Guy de Maupassant writes such insightful and carefully crafted gems ruined by mechanical reading. Reader after reader fails to add any emphasis, drama or life to these fascinating stories. I cannot remember enduring such poor readings since school when each member of the class was pressganged into reading a part in a Shakespeare play.
    Any additional comments?
There must be better readings of these excellent stories elsewhere I would recommend anyone to go and find them.

Everything I love about Eloisa James
Who was your favorite character and why?
Phillipa was hilarious. Her character was candid and bold.
What about Nicola Barbers performance did you like?
She made both the male and female characters seem believable and managed the accent of Wick well.
    So Sweet
A great listen The story, the characters, the narrator.
I LOVED the mother-in-law, she was hyserical.
It's great when a romance novel has LOL scenes.
    DELIGHTFUL
I wish it were longer. This was a happy romance about a young woman determined to control her own destiny. It was funny, never was there a dull moment and performed by one of my favorite narrator's.
3 stars. Sweet, nice, enjoyable romance story.
    STORY BRIEF:
Phillipa and Rodney had been friends since childhood. Their parents want them to marry. Phillipa does not want to marry Rodney and runs away. She loves babies and hears that the nearby Prince and his bride have a newborn baby with problems. Phillipa goes there to work as the babys nursemaid. She meets Wick the butler. Wick is the Princes half brother. He feels he can never marry a lady due to his servant-station in life.
    REVIEWERS OPINION:
I liked Phillipas actions and conversation when she arrived at the castle and did things for the baby. The story and how it resolved was good. Its a short story - maybe a fourth of the length of a regular book. The narrator was excellent. There were two sex scenes which were ok, but dont expect hot. The purpose was showing relationships, not to steam up the reader.
This book can be read as a stand-alone, but its better if you read A Kiss at Midnight first. I enjoyed getting to know Wick in the first book which flowed into this book.
    Genre: regency romance.
    great ending of series
i enjoyed it, incorporated characters well and was a good story, a little too much self doubt but still enjoyed

    Christmas Stories From The BBC
I almost skipped this enchanting collection of stories set around the holiday season and coming from around the world because of warning reviews. I am so glad I went ahead and gave the collection a chance. What a delight it turned out to be!
The narration was perfection with each story read by a different actor--each completely invested in the production--putting in masterful performances. It couldn't have been better.
The stories are just plain wonderful. A positive collection filled with varying experiences and points of view that I think it would be a shame to judge and discard them so lightly. The story that caused the troublesome reviews was Christmas in New York. The funny thing is is that this story was written by Betty Smith, author of A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn as a child and loved it. I reread it as an adult and was surprised by how adult the focus and and language was in the stories. The swearing is fairly mild. I find it amusing that the story in question was written for children and about children growing up in the tenements in NYC.
To me, this was a beautiful and thoughtful collection of holiday stories--all of which were evocative of celebrations and merrymaking from many perspectives, angles and worlds. So glad I found it.
    Charming Christmas Collection
These beautiful stories are short selections and stories narrated wonderfully well by some very talented British actors. This collection absolutely set the mood for my Christmas season this year and I expect for many more to come.
The eight Christmas stories and storytellers include:
    1. Winter (from Cider with Rosie) by Laurie Lee, read by Patricia Routledge.
    2. Baboushka by Arthur Scholey, read by Diana Rigg.
    3. Christmas at Dingley Dell (from the Pickwick Papers) by Charles Dickens, read by Derek Jacobi.
    4. The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen, read by Judi Dench.
    5. Dulce Domum (from The Wind in the Willows) by Kenneth Grahame, read by Richard Briers.
    6. A Second Christmas in Kenya (from The flame trees of Thika) by Elspeth Huxley, read by Felicity Kendal.
    7. Christmas Eve in New York (from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) by Betsy Smith, read by Miriam Margolyes.
    8. Christmas Truce (from A Fox Under My Cloak) by Henry Williamson, read by Tim Pigott Smith.
*Note: 'Christmas Eve in New York' does contain language that may not be appropriate for children or those who don't enjoy that sort of thing.

    Members Reviews:
    Smiling more than laughing
Ironically the best story from this compilation was the once that was given away for free. My main problem with this audiobook is that a lot of the stories aren't that funny. Yes, I probably smiled a little during each of them but really didn't laugh all that much.
    Even more laughs than what?
I am a very big fan of short stories and have listened to the Selected Shorts program for over 20 years. I have heard many really funny stories over the years. These are mostly humorous, but not really among the funniest. Indeed check out the American Classics volume for some really funny (and touching and creepy) stories. Several of these stories were really trying to be funny, but did not work for me.
First time laughing on a book
Really enjoable, 6 out of 8 are excellent and acted out really great, the other two are pretencious and not ironic at all
    it was good
had an old flavor to it but was entertaining at its core to see how humor was back then
    Just...just bad
I'm a lover of dry, wry wit...but for god's sake, this is horrible. This is the sort of dribble you dread sitting through at a boring friend's dinner party.

    Members Reviews:
    Definitely worth the read
Several of the stories in this book were beautifully written. The imagery alone makes this book of shorts something worth reading. Porter takes moments, memories, and gives one a snapshot of beauty and emotion involved in human decisions. Well-done
Short stories not to be missed
I love short stories and have probably read thousands over the years but this collection had me mesmerised.
Each story was totally original and engrossing and took me on a journey where I had no premonition of how it would end.
Andrew Porter has incredible insight to write so eloquently in the title story of the female experience in a relationship beteen a young woman and an older man, this story was beautifully told and the ending was full of pathos.
All the other stories were equally as good and I would highly recommend this book to lovers of short stories.
    Fun, yet surprisingly deep, stories
I bought this book on a whim that the author has the same last name as I do. Each of the stories is fun to read, and can be read within a matter of minutes. However I found that after reading each story my mind was sufficiently intrigued to go back and reread it, slowly, ponderingly. Great depths of storytelling surfaced when I did that.
    Beautifully written collection!
Just finished reading this book and I can't stop thinking about it. The writing is gorgeous--full of poignant meditations on being human and trying your best to come to terms with the past. Porter definitely understands people--the secret thoughts we all have toward one another, the hidden motivations behind our actions. In so many of the stories ("The Theory of Light and Matter," "Azul") you get the sense that the author has looked into your heart and taken notes. Read the opening story--the fantastic "Hole"--and I dare you to put the book down. A deeply emotional reading experience--one of the best new books I've read in the past year.
    Honest and compelling
I'm so very glad that I discovered Andrew Porter. I read this just after I read his novel "In Between Days." I am waiting for his next literary achievement.

    Members Reviews:
    Hard To Listen To
I've made several attempts to listen to this audiobook since I purchased it last year. I've yet to listen to it in it's entirety because it's just too boring. The only one I've listened to to it's end is the one with how Bobby and Alejandra met and I forced myself to listen to that one because of my love for Friends And Lovers. For the most part, these stories are long, dry and dull. I'm going to try one final time to give it a listen because I am a Dickey fan, but if it doesn't capture me this time, I'm going to delete it.
    poor narration on story 2
The narrator on Amir & Kenya does a poor job. It's painful to listen to him. He slurs some of his words, at times he reads too slowly, like he's trying too hard to pronounce each word. At times, it becomes painful to listen to.
Not what I expected from established authors
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment.
    Any additional comments?
With 1 book, I thought I would get 4 great stories by 4 different authors, but only 1 of the books was good and 1 was fair. The other two just weren't what I expected from authors that I have read before.
