    Title: The Blue Cross
    Subtitle: A Father Brown Mystery
    Author: G. K. Chesterton
    Narrator: James Arthur
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-09-09
    Publisher: Audio Holdings, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
Listeners will delight in these masterful chronicles of the adventures and mishaps of Father Brown. Small, round-faced, and engagingly innocent, Brown is a Roman Catholic priest from East Anglia. He also happens to be a top-notch detective, possessing that rarest of all gifts - an intuition that never fails.
    (P)2009 Audio Holdings, LLC
    Editorial Reviews:
In "The Blue Cross", G. K. Chesterton first introduces Father Brown, his famed fictional detective who moonlights as a Catholic priest (or vice versa). Unlike the other 50 detective stories in the Father Brown series, this plot follows the action of Valentin, head of the Paris police department, rather than the priest himself. There is, however, plenty of Father Brown's sagacity, reason, and psychological insight on display here.
James Arthur brings a classical English accent to this tale of cross-Channel intrigue. When the performance requires it, Arthur easily slips into a French accent or French prose itself, but for the most part his absorbing voice is staunchly British, worthy of a highly educated clergyman.

    A collection of 4 novellas
I am familiar with Jim Butcher and Simon Green, I have read most of what they have written, I enjoyed what they contributed. (not their best, but not their worst either) Kat Richardson's ghost story was interesting and had a real twist, It was good for a 2 1/2 hour listen. Thomas Sniegoski' is new to me, but I found this work very enjoyable and will be looking into checking out some of his other books. If you enjoy urban fantasy, these anthologies are a good way to find new authors. No not every story will knock your socks off but, being fair I have to say I really enjoyed 80% and I didn't hate the other 20%. Wish I could give this 4 1/2 stars.BTW If you have been listening to Jim Butcher "Dresden Files" and Simon Green "Nightside" on Audible, there is a different narrators, still I think they were done well. Nice way to find new authors and narrators.
    Anthology
The Warrior" Book 10.5 (The Dresden Files) by Jim Butcher -
The Difference a Day Makes" Book 9.5 (Nightside) by Simon R. Green -
The Third Death of the Little Clay Dog" Bk 3.5 (Greywalker) by Kat Richardson
Noah's Orphans" Book 1.5 (Remy Chandler) by Thomas E. Sniegoski -
    PIG EAR, GOOD
WEEPING WOMEN, ALMOST ALWAYS MEAN TROUBLE FOR SOMEBODY
I enjoyed three out of four of these, which is a good average. I especially liked Sniegoski's story NOAH'S ORPHANS. Some may not like this story as it shows God as not being perfect. For me the whole concept was cool and the story had a twist or two.
    IS THIS HELL?
NO, BUT YOU CAN SEE IT FROM HERE.
Green has a story from IN THE NIGHTSIDE, which is funny, weird and very different. If you have not read any of the books from this series, this is a good way to get your feet wet.
    Angels use Map Quest?
    All the narrators are great.
    Great P. I. Stories with a twist.
This was the best anthology I have run across. Each novella was a jewel! I had to put it away briefly while I caught up on the Dresden series and then jumped right in. Fortunately I totally lucked out and caught two of the other authors in the perfect sequence I was in with their series! Simon Green was new to me and I am intrigued by his "Nightside" series and will definitely check out some of his other stuff.
I am already a huge Dresden fan so I figured I would like his story the best but Kat Richardson's jaunt to Mexico with Harper Blaine blew me away too. This is the way to do an anthology. Rather than being loaded with many short, mediocre stories it has four great stories by truly talented writers with enough time to develop some great tales.
    BS good, RG bad...
I bought and listened to this book to determien whether or not I wanted to purchase Butcher's Dresden files, as well as to determine if any of the other author's were worth reading.
    My conclusions in order:
    1) Yes.

    Great Collection!
I just finished listening to this audio book, and it was so good I'm going to purchase the next volume. The writing is crisp, descriptive, and the length of each story is perfect. While the narrators listed are Roseanne Cash & Crystal Gayle, there were other male narrators as well -- excellent narration and recording quality. I highly recommend this collection of shorts.
Best of the west vol. 1
For what this book is it is fine. I am not much on short stories. This book reminded me of the old dime novels that I used to read when I was kid. Not bad but not my cup of tea.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Elizabeth Gilbert's story collection Pilgrims first appeared in 1997, it immediately announced her compelling voice, her comic touch, and her amazing ear for dialogue. Brave and unforgettable, the heroes of Pilgrims are sure to strike a chord with fans old and new.
    ©2007 Elizabeth Gilbert; (P)2007 Penguin
    Editorial Reviews:
Elizabeth Gilbert published Pilgrims, her beautiful, bristly short story collection, in 1997, nine years before Eat, Pray, Love, her exuberant, raw meditation on divorce, depression, and healing, made her suddenly famous enough for Julia Roberts to slip on gladiator sandals and beads to play her in a film version of the book. Its a shame that Pilgrims will now probably be forever eclipsed by Eat, Pray, Love since it, too, peels back convention to reveal, with empathy and droll language, the primitive nuttiness and courage that lends ordinary people heart.
By definition, modern pilgrims are wanderers, struggling through daily grinds to find redemption, or the true purpose of life. Each of the tart, spiny characters inhabiting Gilberts 12 stories is searching for something her pilgrims hang out on ranches and in bars, in remote corners of Wyoming and Montana, and vegetable markets in the Bronx. There is sturdy Martha Knox, a ranch cook, with a dark, brown braid thick as a girls arm, and Rose, an elderly widow who drives a kindergarten school bus, crammed, one morning, with ghosts, all adoring suitors from her unchaste past. None of Gilberts characters is immediately charming, but all compel with their routine habits and dustbowl looks.
Coleen Marlo, narrator of Pilgrims, has a silk slip of a voice that ably roams from the coarse drawl of a rodeo cowboy to the hollow whine of Babette, a bawdy Manhattan nightclub singer. Marlo passes up the easy fixes of pinning characters with cartoonish regional accents or undermining their essential dignity by assuming an absence of formal education translates into broken English. Pilgrims is both buoyant and prickly. Under Marlos finespun, intelligent narration, listeners will find an intuitive collaborator to Gilberts good flow.
    Critic Reviews:
"A fine first collection of 12 stories that are richly varied in setting and content, and enlivened by their author's flair for vigorous dialogue and concise summary statement." (Kirkus Reviews)

Barely got through the second chapter. Just could not get into it. Maybe its the storyline or maybe the style of the narrator. Not sure because Ive listened to another Elizabeth Gilbert book and loved it.

Jealously, Murder, Love, Oh Yes, A Cat
Grace Conlin did full justice to this work. I cannot give high enough praise to her performance. Montgomery's magnificent powers are on full display in these fifteen little stories of love, loss, redemption and human dramas. No one does cat stories better than Lucy Maude Montgomery. My favorites are the cats of Patty's Place in "Anne of the Island", Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in "Rilla of Inglesides" and from this collection "Aunt Cynthia's Persian Cat" is definitely a star. I am only mentioning a few stories that I particularly enjoyed but there are none in this collection that I would have passed up. "Her Father's Daughter" is about a girl on her wedding whose parents had separated years earlier. Actually, her mother had got into a pet and locked the guy out. However, the girl didn't lock her father out and is hell bent on having him at her wedding. In "Jane's Baby", two women get into an all out cat fight over who gets their dead sister's baby. "The Dream Child" is about the loss of a child and how the husband and wife go forth. It is a bit strange but not too. "The Education of Betty", well think of the movie "Daddy Long Legs" with Janet Gaynor. In this case, the book is better. Guess who comes to the wedding in "Only a Common Fellow"? I am not telling. "Tannis of the Flats" is a bit unusual, first there is a murder then most of the story takes place in Alberta instead of the Maritimes. Remember there is a thread in Montgomery's stories that these folks are linked to the sea and to traveling off into the dangerous unknowns. Even sometimes the women folk head west. For instance, Jane Anderson couldn't find a husband in P.E.I. so off she charged to the west country and snagged herself a for real millionaire. This little story also touches the conflicting cultures of the Europeans and the natives. Montgomery did an outstanding job with this one in particular.

    Noir as it should be.
A classic tale in the style of the greats, Chandler and Hammett. While reading it you can almost see the black and white movie version in your mind. Better than pulp fiction but the author never sufferred the aclaim of the greats. Too bad, this is a top notch addition to the genre. Read it, listen to it, enjoy.
