Not really a collection of mysteries. Good stories, but only half are mysteries. All performances are superb but material is not what I expected. I will not be looking into other editions of this series.

    Classic classics
I am a very big fan of short stories and have listened to the Selected Shorts program for over 20 years. Any collection can be hit or miss, but this selection of american classics are all big hits. I liked every story and every reader. The stories range from funny to outrageous and touching to creepy. What more could one ask for?
    Classics, indeed.
Where does Selected Shorts: American Classics rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
One of the best Audible selections of the dozens in my library.
What other book might you compare Selected Shorts: American Classics to and why?
A unique experience. Inspired pairing of readers and texts.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Rene Auberjonois' masterful, remarkable delivery of an Edgar Allen Poe story is worth the purchase price on its own. In his hands, the minute joys of Poe's writing are presented to their best advantage. Stockard Channing's similarly spellbinding performance in a Eudora Welty selection will make you want to read everything (or re-read) Welty ever wrote--her mastery of Welty's prose is astounding.
    Any additional comments?
I can't recommend this highly enough.
    Spectacular
Would you listen to Selected Shorts: American Classics again? Why?
Yes, I'm pretty sure I'll return to it more than once.
Who was your favorite character and why?
This is worth buying for Stockard Channing's reading of 'Why I live at the PO' and Joyce Carol Oates' disturbing 'Where are you going, where have you been' read so well by Christine Baranksi. I loved Jerry Stiller's reading of At the Anarchist's Convention too. But really, the whole collection is outstanding and every reader is brilliant.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I kept laughing out loud on the bus listening to 'Why I live at the PO', and ended up in a foetal position listening to 'Where are you going ...'
Brilliant reading of Welty's Why I Live at the PO
Would you listen to Selected Shorts: American Classics again? Why?
I could listen to Stockard Channing's performance of Why I Live at the PO over and over again. It is wonderful. I enjoyed the other stories as well.
Such a fun and entertaining listen!
All of the stories were done with a live audience so the listening experience puts you in their presence too. All the readers/actors were fantastic. Stories were classics in every way.

Mary Higgins Clark is a master storyteller who keeps her readers and listeners spellbound. Now, in her first two published stories, written in the 1950s, she draws on her career as a young Pan American Airways flight attendant to create these tales of adventure and intrigue.
In Stowaway, a courageous flight attendant helps a desperate young man of the underground escape the Soviet police.
In Milkrun, a flight attendant becomes immersed in a web of deception when she serves as a courier for an important document - only to find it's been stolen during the flight.
Stowaway and Milkrun are two edge-of-your-seat classics that could only come from Mary Higgins Clark.

Length: 7 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-24-09
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 76 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
The beloved humorist and bestselling author returns with his most riotous collection of essays to date.
Starting with his trademark outdoorsman's wit, Patrick F. McManus's newest collection ponders the strange allure of the RV, the existential implications of being lost, the baffling tendency of animals to outsmart those who wish to hunt them, and the singular pleasure of doubling the size of every fish one doesn't actually catch.
Combining the curmudgeonly voice of Dave Barry and the innocent tone of Garrison Keillor, McManus brilliantly captures the everyday absurdities that comprise our existence. Alongside his humor, McManus's inimitable vision consistently evokes a childlike wonder at the natural world. Even if we are running low on food, the compass is broken, and we are fairly certain we have just spotted a family of Sasquatches frolicking in the treetops, The Bear in the Attic makes the outdoors seem wildly irresistible.

    Buy the other one
The first chapter is broken on this one. Great book, but this is a broken copy and completely ruins the punchline of the first story. I unfortunately own both, so I'm putting this here so you (and I) know the glitched one from the good one.
A great story teller - will leave you laughing
    Joe
Fourty years ago I read his early books to my kids, in this book, he mixes in his personal life with his zany friends. I would recommend this book to those that want to learn about his early life and how to tell storys.
    another dangerously funny story
the writing makes me believe that I'm listening to little kids discuss things. then you are drawn in and can not believe what mistake they are going to make.
all are fun stories, great entertainment.
    Funny!
This book is funny and great entertainment! It is for all ages, we love Pat McManus and his vision of his world!
    Hilarious Yarns
What did you love best about The Bear in the Attic?
    Wonderful set of tall tales.
What about Norman Dietzs performance did you like?
    Right accent, tone and timing.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Very troublesome reaction. While walking and listening I would burst out in guffaws..earning strange stares from those nearby.

  • Rumpole at Christmas Audiobook by John Mortimer

    Title: Rumpole at Christmas
    Author: John Mortimer
    Narrator: Bill Wallis
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-01-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 84 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
After the exchange of presents (lavender water for her, a tie for him) they settle down to a supermarket turkey with all the trimmings, followed by a glass of port. The only excitement comes in deciding whether to stand for the national anthem after the Queen's Speech.
But at least the criminal fraternity rarely takes a holiday, so over the years Rumpole has found his festive celebrations disturbed in the most welcome ways. Whether it's a Father Christmas who behaves suspiciously at Equity Court's Christmas party, or a high-profile murder trial that comes up at the Bailey just before the holiday season, or a body discovered at the health spa where Rumpole is gloomily trying to survive a not-so-festive Christmas diet of yak's milk and spinach, there's always something wonderfully unlawful to liven up the dull holiday plans.
When Sir John Mortimer died in early 2009, it was widely agreed that Horace Rumpole was his greatest fictional creation. In these seven delightful stories, read by Bill Wallis and collected together for the first time, the great barrister lives on.
    Members Reviews:
    Rumpole at his Best
Mortimer writes a good yarn - Bill Wallis does a great job of reading them! The characterisation is excellent!
Not much about Xmas, but I liked it anyway
    Any additional comments?
I'd forgotten how much I liked the Rumpole series. Xmas isn't really a part of these stories, but I enjoyed them nonetheless.
And a Grouchy Christmas to You!
I'm a recent fan of "Grumpole", having just discovered him for myself a week ago, with the first book in the series, "Rumpole of the Bailey", with Patrick Tull narrating on the version I listened to. I thought no one else could possibly do Rumpole quite as briliantly as Tull did, but must say I enjoyed Bill Wallis's performance as the hapless yet sympathetic barrister tremendously. Rumpole is no great fan of the Christmas season, which every year brings him a new tie from She Who Must Be Obeyed and a bottle of lavender water to this unbending wife, who drags him from one Christmas engagement he can little look forward to, to yet another worse engagement, with the finale being a stay at a "health farm" where the best he can hope for finally happens: a murder suspect to defend to take him away from insipid health food and miserable company. A very entertaining holiday read that I'll be sure to return to regularly during the Christmas season.
    Rumpole continues to please!!
Rumpole and his dry wit are back at it again in this collection of
short tales centered around Rumpole's Christmas holidays away from the courts. Of course, his wife, Hilda--or 'She Who Must Be Obeyed' is always present. The stories include the annual socks and tie present for Rumpole, and the bottle of lavender water for Hilda.
Each different vacation finds a mystery for Rumpole to solve. He also has remembrances of pre holiday cases with Judge Grave'stone', who offhandedly barks his views from the bench. The logic and humor, combined with some modern day issues, continues to be a high point in Mortimer's writing!
    Predictably Wry British Humor
Rumpole at Christmas isn't great literature - it's definitely on the lighter side of fiction. But it's easy to become tired of humorless and bleakly-introspective stories that have unfortunately become the norm in short fiction.

    Editorial Reviews:
Leo McKern delivers another hilarious and decidedly unique performance as Rumpole in John Mortimer's Rumpole a la Carte, a collection of short stories based on his BBC radio plays. McKern's gruff British delivery of the humorously stodgy old barrister will take listeners right back to England. What antics will Rumpole get up to next with his wife on his case, and he on a case at "Old Bailey"? Fans of the BBC plays and the TV series will treasure this collection and ask for more.

To whom do I return the cassette and how do I receive the promised refund? I will not buy again from Amazon unless the price is refunded. Robert S. Campbell, Lawyer, .
Thank you for your immediate response.
    I LOVE Rumpole
I have read and reread all of the Rumpole books; I never tire of him. He's witty, sarcastic, clever, ingenious, spirited, honest to a fault, a bit devilish, and I am beyond sad there are no more Rumpole books to be had. No one writes quite like Mortimer and there is no barrister quite like Rumpole. If I could, I would give any Rumpole book more than five stars. If you like British writing and humor and the law, you will love Rumpole.
    A Grab-Bag of Six Stories
This is also known as RUMPOLE OF THE BAILEY, BOOK 8. Sit back and let John Mortimer entertain you with more Rumpole (of the British legal system) stories.
Rumpole travels to a snooty restaurant and goes on a second honeymoon cruise in these 6 short stories. The most unusual story is the one in which Rumpole takes the prosecution side of a case. Interesting reading.
    Dull and Predictable Stories
Despite the fact that I generally enjoy comic British writing, and have on occasion watched the TV version of Rumpole with amusement, I found this collection of short Rumpole stories rather tedious. Having never read any of the extensive Rumpole series, I figured this collection of six stories would be a good place to test the waters. What I found was a series of predictable tales, populated by thin characters that offer little variety in their foibles from story to story. And while you could make the same case for P.G. Wodehouse's creations, the difference is that he had the Midas touch when it came to language and wit, whereas Mortimer's prose is generally uninspired. After a while, the curmudgeonly grumblings of Rumpole get rather old, as does the sharp tongue of his wife (She Who Must Be Obeyed), the pathetic philandering Erskine Brown, and the doddering foolishness of Uncle Tom. While the cut and thrust of the courtroom scenes do impart a sense of vigor and wit to the proceedings, they are the only bright lights in what are otherwise remarkably dull and predictable stories.

    Publisher's Summary:
Father Brown is an eccentric priest with his own particular ways of dealing with crime. David Timson, having completed the whole of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes canon, a remarkable achievement, turns his hand to the genial but certainly not innocent priest! This collection contains a group of stories from the Innocence of Father Brown, told unabridged.
    Editorial Reviews:
Chesterton's stories of Father Brown, a self-effacing priest who applies his brilliant mind to solving mysteries, are often implausible, melodramatic, and dated. Still, they entertain, and David Timson reads the first six here with loving care. He gives Brown a mild voice, but likable and not weak, and provides other character voices without strain or caricature, including accents. (His American is very good.) His warm, rich, naturally expressive voice not only conveys meaning and emotion but also brings an overall tone of amusement to the stories, letting us know how to take them - this is voice as interpretation. That may seem affected, but Chesterton's stories, self-consciously clever romances addicted to paradox and disputation, are far from naturalistic. Timson gets the tone just righ
    Members Reviews:
    Nostalgic, charming stories
I enjoyed both volumes of THE INNOCENCE OF FATHER BROWN. David Timson is always an amazing narrator, but here he surpasses himself as he renders innocents and villains with equal aplomb. Father Brown himself is unique and unforgettable, as are many of the ancillary characters, and the settings are varied and delightfully rendered. I recommend the two volumes to those who love a good short story collection, classic mysteries, or just long for a little trip back into a world forever lost to us. Enjoy them.
    Not all of the stories
Would you try another book from G. K. Chesterton and/or David Timson?
This is only 6 of the 12 stories. Therefore, most definitely NOT unabridged. Disappointed.
Would you ever listen to anything by G. K. Chesterton again?
Yes, we love G.K. Chesterton. Just wanted the whole book instead of only half.
