1. Story (theme) Former Oncology nurse told Dr. G the work was depressing, and she “felt more like a nurse” once working with hospice. For the patient DISTRESS can occur anytime during a cancer journey: Pre-diagnosis (biopsy, imaging), Treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation), Post-treatment, Remission (new identity), Survivorship (guilt), End-of-Life (existential)

2. Educate -(Teaching point) Dr. Drolet is a psychiATRIST not a psychOLOGIST. Her specialty is psycho-oncology which is collaborative with oncology and palliative care to provide mental healthcare for patients with cancer. Pre-diagnosis can cause initial trauma. Patients can suffer from ANTICIPATORY ANXIETY when a lump is found in the breast or after receiving abnormal mammogram results. The language physicians use can cause “Medical trauma” and PTSD. Battle language has an effect on the psyche of patients. EVERYONE does not respond to treatment or cancer is found at a late stage. When they get to Dr. G they’re often exhausted and frustrated with the healthcare system, many times express feeling abandoned by PCPs and oncologists. 1. Story (theme) Dr. G found her copy of the “Gone From My Sight” booklet inside of her “Being Mortal” book, but didn’t realize who wrote it until recently. On 08/18/2023 Barbara posted “The medical profession will not be able to cure or ‘fix’ everyone” Dr. G invited her to discuss this topic. Mr. Karnes died the week of originally planned discussion about the physician’s role in fixing our healthcare system, as it affects people during the end of life.

How do we prevent CRISIS MODE and create smoother transitions of care? EDUCATION of referral sources (ex. hospitals, case managers, fiduciary associations https://pfac-pro.org/ ) and the public about optimal discharge plans to maintain a sense of PURPOSE in the lives of seniors.

2. Educate (Teaching point) What is the CONTINUUM OF CARE? It is beyond the end of life, consider PRIOR to that: Aging in place at home, or move to RCFEs, home care, mobile physicians, transportation, home health for physical therapy (after a fall and hospitalization), palliative care, hospice.
