In the US, the two main ingredients used to meet the protein requirement of pigs are soybean meal and synthetic amino acids. For the most part, whether to rely on one or the other depends on how the market is behaving โ but do pigs respond differently to each method? In this episode, I talk with Dr. Henrique Cemin about a study he performed that tested two diets with different soybean meal inclusion rates for grow-finish pigs in order to better clarify this issue.
Dr. Henrique Cemin is from Porto Alegre, Brazil. He obtained his degree in Veterinary Medicine and his Master's in Animal Science from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, and received his Ph.D. in Applied Swine Nutrition from Kansas State University, where much of his research was related to amino acids for nursery and finishing pigs. Currently a Senior Swine Nutritionist at Hubbard Feeds, a company that conducts more than 20 large-scale experiments every year by using a total of about 50,000 pigs, his primary responsibilities include providing technical support and managing the company's R&D program.
