I will be spoiling the story, so if you don’t want to know it, stop watching now! We are introduced to Huma and the political state of affairs of the Knights of Solamnia immediately. Huma is sent on a mission with Rennard, his immediate commander, and they rout some goblins in a desolate town in Solamnia. There are a lot of towns like this near the frontline of battle between the Dark Queen’s forces and the Knights of Solamnia. They battle some goblins and Huma is separated from his squad. He comes across goblins torturing a minotaur, and with concealment from the mists rescues the minotaur, Kas. Kas killed his slaver, ogres in the east, and says he owes Huma his life. This is a lot like Chewbacca’s life debt to Han Solo, and their relationship is also very similar, but as I am a Star Wars fan, I don’t mind it. 

They try to return to Huma’s knights and come across a group of diseased and recently pillaged villagers who choose to attack Kas as an act of vengeance. Huma tries to intervene, but it is a Silver Dragon that prevents the battle, and it offers Huma and Kaz a ride back to Huma’s unit. On the way they see a squad of dragons flying toward them, searching for Magius, and the dragon has them jump off, but Huma stays on and fights Crynus, Takhisis’ warlord and leader of the Black Guard, her elite troops, on his black dragon Charr. Huma wounds Crynus in the back severely and rather than the other dragons coming in to kill them, they safely guard the retreat of Crynus. 

Solamnic Knights ride up, and its Rennard and Huma’s squad. They bicker over Kaz, but ultimately accept Huma’s word about Kas, and all ride to the front lines, which has shifted in their absence. The Silver Dragon leaves and as they ride further they see a battle ongoing and join in. In the battle Huma is knocked from his horse and trampled. He wakes and a half-elf-ish woman named Gwyneth, the silver dragon in disguise,

Discussion

During the formation of Krynn, all of the gods came together and gave life to this newest of creations. The High God populated the planet with animals and plants and called forth powerful spirits, given birth by the formation of Krynn, to act in service of the gods from time to time. These spirits known as Beast Lords are able to take animal form, and can even polymorph into humanoid forms as well. They are not gods, nor are they technically demigods, but they are similar to the Aspects of both. Thus they are only temporarily inhabiting physical forms and cannot be killed, only temporarily banished. 

Their motives are left to the god providing them with direction, but there are some basic divine guidelines they are meant to follow. Their original intent as mandated by the High God was to aid the animals and lead them when the races of Krynn threatened their lives. They are not to interfere with the world at large. They are meant to ensure the safety and welfare of their dominions. Though they are not above being bribed by gods to act on behalf of their self interest.

The first Beast Lord was Bast, a Catlord. His history is one of legend. One tale says that he was taken from mortal life and bestowed the Mantle of Immortality, thereby elevated to Beast Lord. Others tell that he was brought from the essence of Krynn and inhabited mortal form as other Beast Lords. Not even he is aware of which is true, or whether he is even from Krynn originally. Thus the Beast Lord, Bast is known as Mereklar. He is incredibly handsome in human form. He has slanting blue eyes and skin as black as night. He is tall, strong, lithe, with his movements being fluid and graceful. He has long powerful nails at the ends of his fingers for attacking, and is able to leap great distances. He is traditionally dressed in tight black clothing, featuring a number of oval shaped jewels around his neckline. He conjures an image of the Black Panther from Marvel comics in my mind. 

His powers are truly magnificent. He is able to walk unseen through shadows, even evading the gods if desired. He can polymorph into any cat form, but will always have shining black fur. He heals from his wounds nearly as quickly as he can travel through his realm. He is mightier than your average dragon and more cunning than the wittiest mortal. Mereklar is believed to be able to be killed however. He is said to have nine lives,

Discussion

Kitiara was the last of the original three characters created by Tracy and Laura Hickman as they traveled to TSR for an interview. This was before Dragonlance was the name of the campaign world, but the two game designers knew they wanted this new project to convey the idea of balance between good, neutrality and evil. Laurana, named after Laura Hickman, was that pillar of good, Tanis was the pillar of neutrality and Kitiara was the pillar of evil. I have always struggled with the idea of evil, especially when applied to Kit. She is only acting in her own self interest, and thus, I cannot see Kit seeing herself as evil. 

Kitiara believes, as her father did, that “Power is the only truth.” There is nothing inherently evil in this belief, it’s how you exercise the power that defines good or ill. The framing of this dichotomy that Power exercised is evil, only muddies the pillar itself. This is further contextualized by the authors framing her evil actions through the following of Takhisis and by becoming a Dragon Highlord. But again, this is only evil if we are to believe the actions of Takhisis’ armies are evil and the actions of the Whitestone armies are good. But can there be good and evil when both sides are enslaving, slaughtering, and ultimately destroying innocence. This thought exercise is meant to frame the idea that I don’t believe Kit saw herself as good or evil at all, only the authors did. And it is because of their framing that any of us do.

Kitiara was a character that defied every norm. She was a skilled female warrior, a rarity in post Cataclysm Ansalon. She was cunning and steadfast in her control of her emotions, something most male warriors struggled with. She stood up to Lord Ariakas, Lord Soth, and won the respect of the Dark Queen, her armies and her mount, so much so that after her death, Lord Soth and Khellendros would scour the planes of existence in search of her soul. She used men, as men traditionally used women. She was one to celebrate the indulgences of life but never at the expense of her own greater goals. She was also capable of compassion and love, even if she refused to acknowledge it outwardly, and this is seen in her care for her brothers as a young woman. Let's take a look at her history and see if we can understand the character any better.

Book One begins with the Gods standing around Mina as she’s lying on the ground, just after having raised the Tower of the Blood Sea to the surface for Chemosh. Majere and Mishakal reveal that Mina was created when the gods created the world. She was a by-product that would have been destroyed by the other gods if Paladine and Mishakal told the other gods about her. They set her into an eternal slumber and placed her in the depths of Krynn’s oceans. When Takhisis stole the world and was locating artifacts and magic to draw energy from, she discovered Mina, and decided to corrupt and use her to her own ends. Gilean forces the gods to swear an oath to let Mina find her own path and role in the pantheon of deities. Everyone reluctantly agrees. Just then, Mina gets up and runs to the edge of the battlements, leaping into the ocean.

Chemosh, refusing to let Mina go, now wanting to bring her to the dark gods side, turns Ausric Krell into a Bone Acolyte and orders him to collect Mina. Rhys Mason and Nightshade are at the shoreline reflecting on what has happened when a young child, crying out for help, washes up on shore. It is Mina but she has reverted to her childlike form. They take her to the grotto temple of Zeboim where they had recently escaped to get her warm, and they are approached by Zeboim who wants Rhys to stay with Mina. Majere also wants him to protect her until she makes a choice about where she will land. Zeboim warms them all up and leaves, and Krell arrives, but Mina is having none of his nonsense,
