Welcome to another DragonLance Saga episode. My name is Adam and today we are going to talk about the magic of Krynn. As presented in the original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons modules, Magic was gifted by the Gods to mortals. Divine magic was unavailable, as man had turned their backs on the gods since the Cataclysm. With the end of DL1 Dragons of Despair, Divine magic returned with Goldmoon and the Discs of Mishakal being delivered to Elistan, who would become the first priest of Paladine Alt Cataclius. Henceforth, once again, the true priests of the Gods were granted magic through their Holy Symbols. Arcane magic was granted to those willing to devote their lives to the art, but it was structured and controlled by the Orders of High Sorcery. This was a straightforward presentation of how and why magic existed on Krynn. This changed slightly as the campaign world grew in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition. As the history of Krynn was being further detailed, the boxed set Dwarven Kingdoms of Krynn presented ideas of elemental magic that was inherent in the planet that the Smiths could tap into and use. This magic would ultimately disappear with God's continued influence and control and by the time the Graygem was lost, elemental magic was completely gone. Though the Scions as a result of the Graygem were able to still practice elemental magic. Whether this was a magical gift from Chaos or their ability to continue tapping into elemental magic lost to the Smiths is still yet unclear. Many of these Scions were slaughtered by their jealous kin, and of any still exist, it is only in hiding.

Then came the Summer of Chaos, and the true absence of the gods. In this Fifth Age and the SAGA System, Krynn was stripped of all Divine and arcane magic. Palin Majere would ask Fizban the Fabulous if any magic remained in the world just before his departure, and Fizban replied: "Not as you know it. There may be other magic. It is up to you to find it.". What Palin would come to discover is that when the gods crafted Krynn, they imbued it with magical energies. This divine power is what grants all magical creatures their abilities and as it was dormant in the planet itself, mortals could learn to tap into it in the forms of Mysticism and Sorcery. Now, whether this ‘new’ magic was in fact just the Elemental magic of old, or if it was something separate was never clarified in the time, but it is certain that there are two distinct areas from which the denizens of Krynn draw magic from. The Gods or the planet itself.

Book One picks up with Mina and Galdar in the hidden tomb of Takhisis. They have stayed there several months. Mina was afraid others would find the tomb and make light of the body, even steal jewelry or artifacts and desecrate the tomb. In truth, the gods have hidden the mountain and Galdar is being reminded by Sargonnas of his bargain for his life. Galdar is unsuccessful at getting Mina to leave and when a figure approaches from the distance, he moves to intercept it. It is in fact Chemosh, God of the Undead who is looking for a youthful follower to draw in youthful worshippers. He has chosen Mina, knowing that she must have something that drew Takhisis to her, that he could use or exploit. Chemosh throws Galdar as far as Silvanesti where he is met by a party searching for him, sent by Sargonnas. Galdar is to be the liaison between the minotaur and human nations.

This is where the book differs from every other Dragonlance novel, in a really good way. Chemosh seduces Mina, and by the end of Book One, actually has feelings for her! There is more sex in the first book than there was in any of the other trilogies. I, for one, welcome it. He reveals Mina’s hidden self. Since she was washed up on the shores of the Citadel of Light, she had no memory of her past life. Then she worshiped Goldmoon, and was drawn away by Takhisis and worshipped her. Chemosh tells her to know herself,

I have covered part of the story of the Graygem in a lot of videos. This is because it is essential in placing wild magic within Krynn, creating the majority of life forms on Krynn and ultimately nearly destroying it. But even that isn’t exactly correct, as the gem itself is only a container. It’s what’s trapped inside that is causing the chaos. And to be precise it’s Chaos itself that is within the gem. There are many variations on how Chaos became trapped and who Chaos is precisely, but it wasn’t until Dragons of a Vanished Moon that we were provided the definitive account by the creators of this wonderful campaign world of Dragonlance. Up until Dragons of Summer Flame the various authors and game designers couldn’t even settle on a name for the Graygem, referring to it as the graystone, graygem, and every variation of spelling imaginable. You would think an artifact as integral to the campaign world would have a more solid presence with it’s contributors, but alas, what is history but the perception of those retelling it? 

The Graygem ended up on the Irda’s altar on the isle of Anaitha where The Decider, influenced by Takhisis, used his powerful magic to break it apart with the intention of protecting his isle from the Knights of Takhisis. But that is the third act of the history of the Graygem, so let’s take a few steps back, put away Reorx’s dice, and start from the beginning.

The High God had established the Order of Creation and the Destiny of Souls which he outlined in the Tobril. He then created the gods of Krynn, the most powerful being Ionthas. Gilean guided Ionthas with the Tobril in the creation of the world, aided by Reorx, Sirrion and others. This is in stark contrast to all other creation myths of Dragonlance, but it was the last creation myth written by Tracy Hickman and Matthew L. Martin under the guise of Valthonis (formerly known as the god Paladine) to explain the War of Souls, so I believe it must be shared here. With the world forged, the High God spoke it into existence, he commanded the gods to shape it. Ionthas deviated from the Tobril, grew proud and haughty and supplanted the High God as the true deity. He sent his might across Krynn, undoing the other gods’ work. He found he could not create anything new, but only damage and distort others’ creations. 

In his rage, Ionthas turned from the High God and his fellow gods, renaming himself Chaos.

Book One opens with a retelling of the Death of Goldmoon, but from Dalamar and Palin’s perspectives. After Goldmoon dies, they know they are in danger, but before they have time to do anything about it, the Dark knights are pounding on the door. Mina eventually busts it down and as they try to cast spells to defend themselves, the magic is stripped from them and they are both killed by Mina! This was a terrible end, for now, to two rather fantastic characters, but being killed by Mina and Takhisis is better than falling from a Valenwood tree. She ends up raising them from the dead as zombies and has them sit on her cart where she brings Goldmoon encased in amber with her beauty once again restored in death. Goldmoons spirit traveled to Wanderer, her and Riverwinds son, and told him to travel South. It is where he met Gilthas as the Qualinesti Elves are traveling through the Plains of Dust, coming close to Death. Wanderer promises aid, and tells Gilthas that Silvanesti has also fallen to the Dark Knights. 

Tasslehoff and Conundrum time travel to the distant past after Conundrum fixed the Device of Time Journeying. They actually met Huma and Magius themselves! This is a HUGE moment, as they were able to find the lost river of time! This means there is hope for the gods and dragons to return. Samauval has taken control of Qualinesti and offered land to all who enter his service on behalf of the Dark Knights, so Qualinesti is an occupied territory much like Silvanesti.

One can argue that were it not for the Code and the Measure, and the Knights of Solamnia’s insistence on following them, the Knights of Takhisis may never have formed. Until Ariakan’s imprisonment in the High Clerist’s Tower, and his education by the Knights of Solamnia about their orders, no denizen of the dark ever conceived of emulating the Knights’ rigid structure. But it is an order just as disciplined that is required to not only defeat the orders of good in the world, but to maintain order and control afterward. A lesson learned all too well in the War of the Lance with the Dragonarmies. It was a well known paradigm of evil in Krynn’s history that evil feeds upon itself, it is the law of balance that allows evil to never overthrow good, which is required in the campaign setting, but is exactly what happens, with the consent of all the Gods in the Summer of Chaos no less!

One may also argue that were it not for that godly consent to allow the Knights of Takhisis to dominate Krynn without objection, they would never have become the destructive order to all of Ansalon that they become in the Fifth Age and War of Souls; the other side of that coin being Chaos destroying all of Krynn, so perhaps we can just leave that train of thought alone for this episode.

After his imprisonment, and earning the respect of the Knights of Solamnia, Ariakan was released. The Knights genuinely expected Ariakan to petition to join their order, but instead, he sought to build his own knighthood that drew from the best aspects of the Knights of Solamnia, while cutting away their failings. Ariakan saw that the flaw in Takhisis’ minions was selfishness. They were more concerned with personal gain than Takhisis’ dominion, so Ariakan decided to use a vision to guide his orders. He was visited by an aspect of Takhisis in the form of a dark warrior who ultimately supported Ariakan’s vision. She commanded him to begin immediately in her name. Ariakan gathered the remaining forces of his father’s and called upon his mother, the goddess Zeboim to raise him a secret base in which to build his forces from. She raised an island in the North Sirrion Sea, and within a year, Storm’s Keep was built. It maintained its secrecy due to the crosswinds of warmer northern waters and the frigid southern polar waters colliding,
