Portland's Lord Gore were both behind the times and ahead of it when they emerged 20 years ago with their blend of Impetigo, Autopsy and Carcass. Like old school death metal in general, the band has been experiencing a resurgence: This year saw the re-release of their first two albums, as well as their first album in 15 years, Scalpels For Blind Surgeons.

I spoke to Lord Gore vocalist Gurge about the band's early albums, their return, and how their mentality has changed since their first two releases. We also discussed the metal scene in Portland, and Gurge's vocal contributions to the stop motion short film Tomorrow I Will Be Dirt.

Here is the 101st episode of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Jon "Necromancer" Woodring of Chicago death metal band Bones.

"Filthy", "dirty", and "crusty" is how Chicago's Bones are usually described. The band's style of punky death metal hearkens back to the early years of the genre, when bands were more interested in making a satanic racket and the music could never be described as "overthought".

I spoke to bassist/vocalist Jon Necromancer about the latest Bones album Diseased, the long process of getting it released, and how they ended up on the Indian label Transcending Obscurity. We also spent some time discussing the nature of the Chicago scene, and how it may be different from the other metal scenes in the U.S.

I spoke to Dylan Carlson about the creation and intentions behind Earth's ninth album, Full Upon Her Burning Lips, which came out earlier this year. We also discussed the creation of Earth's landmark debut Earth 2, and their 2008 album The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull - the album that led me down the road to the larger world of drone and experimental music, and one of the top hundred albums that I'm grateful to have heard.

My history with Exhumed goes back almost 20 years, to the release of their second album Slaughtercult. Along with Nasum, Soilent Green, and other Relapse Records signees of the late Nineties, the band can be credited with grindcore's resurgence at the turn of the millennium, as well as the proliferation of gore-grind (or as Exhumed call it, "gore fucking metal").

I spoke with Matt about Exhumed's upcoming seventh album Horror, how Sebastian Phillips (of Noisem) joined the band, and the ways that the B-horror video culture of the Eighties and Nineties influenced them. We also discussed Exhumed's legacy, and why it's the project that Matt keeps returning to.

When I spoke to Richard Knox a week ago, I made it a point to ask about his project Glissando; not only were they the first band to be released on Gizeh Records, but they were my introduction to both his label and ambient/experimental music in general. I spoke with Toby about his music school education, his approach to songwriting and composition, and the upcoming Kayo Dot album Blasphemy. We also discussed his last "solo" album They Are The Shield and the final maudlin of the Well album, Part The Second.
