Since the beginning of their decades-long career, Deranged had little in common with other Swedish death metal bands. Eschewing the Sunlight Studios and melodic styles that dominate the Swedish scene, Deranged shares the musical and lyrical brutality of American death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation.

I spoke with new vocalist Johan Bergström about how he ended up joining the band, Deranged's long history, and how their brutal death metal style separates them from the rest of their Swedish peers. We also discussed their upcoming tenth album Deeds of Ruthless Violence, and why Deranged are a metal version of a "true crime" podcast.

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Disastroid could be considered a "retro" band - albeit an atypical one. Their heavy sound is rooted in Seattle's Nineties heyday, with plenty of nods to the stoner and noise rock bands of the same decade.

I spoke to vocalist/guitarist Enver Koneya about how the band started with a Craiglist ad, whether or not he considers Disastroid a "throwback" band, and the experience of writing and recording the upcoming Disastroid album Mortal Fools. We also spent some time discussing the Bay Area music scene, and how it may have changed in recent years.

Boston duo Bedtimemagic's music is as uniquely their own as the outfits they wear onstage. Their sound, which they refer to as "trash rock", revolves around Nicholas Pentabon's rumbling bass and Morgan Berns' frenetic drums, and draws comparisons to noise rock mainstays like Unsane, Man Is The Bastard, and Lightning Bolt.

I spoke to Nicholas and Morgan about how high fives led to the band forming, and their dog-centric visual aesthetic. We also discussed the recording of their first full-length album, Pillow Talk. It was a fun chat, and I enjoyed it immensely.

Emerging from Bergen in the early Nineties, Örth was part of a wave of Norwegian bands who trafficked in speed, blasphemy, and zero fucks. Resurrected and rechristened Arvas at the turn of the millennium, the project took on elements of death metal and eighties thrash.

I spoke to founder and multi-instrumentalist V-Rex about the band's history and their latest album Equanimity. We also discussed the long delayed release of Orth's Nocturno Inferno album, which was recorded in the Nineties but didn't see the light of day til 2017.

Jarboe is unlike any other musician. As a solo artist, she's touched on just about every genre - her varied discography weaves through jazz, rock, noise, and electronica. And during her time with Swans, she redefined the parameters what heavy music could be.

This podcast is unusual, in the sense that I never corresponded with Jarboe directly. I sent my questions via e-mail to her webmaster Moselle, and Jarboe recorded her answers. She spoke about her last solo album The Cut of the Warrior, her upcoming album Illusory, and her collaborations with the likes of Neurosis, Justin Broadrick and Byla.
