There is no deeper institutional issue at Indiana, despite attempts to frame it that way.
The episode then shifts to the growing NIL power struggle, highlighted by Duke’s lawsuit against Darian Mensah. Duke’s claim centers on alleged exclusive ownership of Mensah’s name, image, and likeness following his transfer portal entry. The case illustrates how unsettled NIL governance remains and how aggressively institutions are beginning to test contractual boundaries.

I’m not interested in the surface-level conversation around Derek Carr and Vegas, because the real issue isn’t whether Mendoza can play. The issue is whether drafting Mendoza out of Indiana into a bad situation actually serves anyone involved. Quarterbacks don’t develop in chaos. Putting a young player into an unstable environment doesn’t make him tougher. It shortens his shelf life.

That same reality showed up in the College Football Playoff game between Indiana and Miami. Yes, Mendoza made a high-level play to get into the end zone. But this game wasn’t decided by a highlight. It was decided by special teams and discipline. Miami missed a field goal. Indiana blocked a punt and turned it into a touchdown. That’s the gap. That’s the game.

Once that happened, Miami was chasing points, and that’s when mistakes compound. The interception at the end by Carson Beck wasn’t about bad luck. The throw was there. Indiana simply made the play. When you’re playing from behind because of self-inflicted damage, execution tightens and margins disappear.

I also address Robert Saleh reportedly heading to Tennessee. That team already watched what happens when you fire a coach without a real plan and let Mike Vrabel walk into New England and immediately stabilize a franchise. If Tennessee has learned anything, it should be this: hire the coach, then actually get out of the way.

Different levels. Same lesson.
Situation matters. Discipline matters. And organizations that ignore both keep repeating the same mistakes only with different names.

In this episode, I start by doubling down on Josh Allen.This isn’t about talent. It’s about accountability. Josh Allen has now piled up mistake after mistake in the playoffs. A combined total of 15 fumbles and 6 interceptions. He didn’t lose all of those fumbles, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t hurt his football team. In the postseason, every loose ball matters, every short field matters, and at some point experience has to show up in decision making.
From there, I move into C.J. Stroud and the mistakes he’s made. Yes, Stroud has played some hero ball. Yes, he needs to learn when to take a sack and live for the next play. But what separates him from Josh Allen is timeline. Allen has been in the league long enough that these mistakes shouldn’t still be happening. Stroud still has another year or two before it’s truly make-or-break.

I said from day one he’d be better than Brian Kelly, and that gap is already showing. Any program, college or pro, should want Marcus Freeman as its head football coach.
College basketball is now staring down another round of alleged gambling scandals. Including point shaving, manipulating spreads, and reported payouts ranging from $10,000 to $30,000. This isn’t random, and it isn’t surprising. We’ve built sports ecosystems that quietly reward losing. In the NFL, losing earns you premium draft capital. In college, the pressure to cash in has exploded while safeguards lag behind. When money, access, and incentives collide, integrity is always the first thing tested. And lately, it’s failing that test across multiple levels of sports.
Then there’s the absurd backlash toward A.J. Brown. Blaming him for a season and wanting to trade him for a sideline exchange is the media being lazy. Unless there’s something concrete we don’t know about locker-room issues (and there isn’t at this point) this is just a competitor demanding excellence. Him getting into it with Nick Sirianni is nothing. Peyton Manning did it. Tom Brady did it. Travis Kelce literally shoved his coach. Passion isn’t a problem but pretending it is, is.
Finally, there’s Patrick Mahomes saying he wants to be back by Week 1. No one should ever question his toughness. We’ve seen him play through pain at every level. But toughness isn’t the issue, longevity is. An injury like this, if rushed or mishandled, can shorten a career in a hurry. The best move for Mahomes, and the league, is patience because one bad return can change everything.

The College Football Playoff isn’t expanding for competition. That argument is dead.
This is about allocation. Conferences aren’t worried about who earns a spot, they’re locking in seats before the structure hardens. This isn’t a playoff anymore, and it’s barely an invitational. It’s a controlled distribution system designed to make sure the same programs are always in the room, regardless of what happens on the field.
Then there’s New York.
John Harbaugh isn’t walking into a fixable situation. If he couldn’t get it done with Derrick Henry, a Hall of Fame running back, and if winning a Super Bowl with Lamar Jackson — a two-time MVP — was still out of reach, the idea that it suddenly works with this roster doesn’t hold up.
New York’s defense ranked 28th in yards allowed per game last season and 26th overall. That’s not a tweak away from contention. That’s foundational rot.
Jameis Winston is the backup. He’s great for quotes. He’s great for memes. He’s not great for winning football games.

That’s why programs either grow up or get exposed. And that’s why coaches like James Franklin don’t get unlimited grace when talent keeps folding under pressure.

Ole Miss and Miami - that game belonged to the players, not the sidelines. Lane Kiffin tried to turn it into a spectacle, but the kids turned it into a classic. One of the best college football games we’ve seen, full stop. Ole Miss beat themselves. They wanted fireworks instead of violence. If they run the football, if they lean into the kind of ugly, physical game Miami was begging for, that result flips. Style points cost them a win.

Marcus Freeman and the court of public opinion. This is what happens when people sprint to be first instead of bothering to be right. Headlines over facts. Outrage over truth. No charges are being filed. And yet the damage is already done because clicks matter more than credibility. That’s not journalism. That’s negligence.

The novelty is gone. The curiosity is gone. And now the question isn’t what’s next for Jake Paul. It’s whether this was always the inevitable end of the experiment once he stepped in with a real heavyweight who didn’t play along.

Then there’s college football, where accountability continues to be optional. Alabama dug themselves a 17–0 hole, and Oklahoma still found a way to hand the game back. Fans will yell about the officials. They’ll scream about the fumble that should’ve been reviewed. Cool. None of that changes the fact that if you’re up 17–0 at home, in your own building, you’re supposed to finish. They didn’t. Sloppy execution, missed chances, and not enough plays when it mattered. That’s not bad luck, that’s bad football.
