Drinks and a Movie

It's Bourbon Heritage Month so we have a spirits driven episode for y'all! This week I chat with Brian Schmidt of Reserve Bar, an online liquor store with a massive selection of great spirits. Brian travels the country picking out single barrels for Reserve Bars Top Flight series. In this episode he curates a flight of unique single barrel picks that he selected himself (some haven't been released yet). We begin with four pours of bourbon. Woodford Reserve, Wilderness Trail, Bulliet, and New Riff. We then move on to a single barrel Copalli Rum and Rye whiskeys from Whistlepig and Sagamore Spirit. In this unedited new episode, Matt and I discuss the latest Kevin Smith movie, Clerks 3!!! We keep with the Clerks podcast tradition of trying out single barrel store picks. Up first is a Sazerac Rye Single Barrel pick from Alameda liquor in Burbank CA. 2nd is Dads Hat Rye single barrel pick from 2 Men and a Zombie of West Covina liquor. 3rd is an Angels Envy port wine finished bourbon single barrel pick from the famous Circus liquor in North Hollywood. All three are great and all three are currently available as of 9/21/22.

This week I sit with Chris to try out a couple single barrel store picks from the famous Circus Liquor in North Hollywood CA. We taste a Buffalo Trace pick and a 1792 Full proof pick while chatting about Kevin Smith's 2006 film, Clerks 2.

WE ARE BACK!!! Welcome to Season 4 of Drinks and a Movie Podcast! This episode was recorded a couple months ago over the summer so we've been really looking forward to share it with the listeners of podcast land. This week I'm joined by Jesenia Chavez, she is a creative writer, poet, teacher, and one of the hosts of 'Que Me Cuentas? A mostly Latinx storytelling podcast'. We discuss her podcast, why Latinx stories are important, and then we dive into an indie film from 2012 directed by Aurora Guerrero called 'Mosquita Y mari. I had never seen this movie before so was happy that Jesenia brought it to my attention. We also try out Mijenta Reposado tequila, launched in December of 2020 with production overseen by Maestra Tequilera Ana Maria Romero. this company is all about sustainability and the tequila is excellent, you'll definitely want to give it a try.

In this final episode of season 3 of Drinks and a Movie Podcast, Matt and I discuss Richard Linklaters 2014 film 'Boyhood'. It took 12 years to complete so we drink some 12 year old whiskey in the form of Red Breast cask strength. This week Chris and I get to try two surprise whiskey flights. Flight 1 is five pours of whiskeys from different Texas distilleries. Flight 2 is four pours of whiskey, each from a different state.
The flights were sent to us and curated by our guest, Shannon Hood. She is a Whiskey Sommelier who runs 'Pourly Educated, a Spirited Experience' where she curates whiskey tasting events to educate people (like myself) in all things whiskey. It was a blast chatting with her as she led us through a tasting of bourbons, wheat whiskeys, and single malts from various distilleries in Texas and around the Country. If you're a fan of whiskey and are looking for some new options to try then you're not going to want to muss this episode.

In this weeks episode I'm joined by filmmaker Cyndy Fujikawa to drink some Bakers Bourbon and discuss her documentary filmmaking. Her latest film, 'Ninety Minutes Later' (currently in post-production), chronicles the career and tragic death of the late actress Vanessa Marquez. In August of 2018, what started as a wellness check for Vanessa led by local authorities resulted in her getting shot and killed by police. This documentary serves as a mean to find answers and justice for Vanessa Marquez. We also discuss an earlier documentary film by Cyndy called 'Old Man River' which does a deep dive into the history of her father, prolific character actor Jerry Fujikawa (Chinatown, The Twilight Zone, M*A*S*H, Taxi)
