In 1941, Msimang was born in Edendale, which is outside of Pietermaritzburg and enrolled in the Catholic Inkamana High School in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal in 1960.

He enrolled at the University of Fort Hare in 1962 when he was 20 years old.
