Swayman left the U. of Maine as college hockey’s best goaltender following the 2020 season. However, NHL COVID protocols kept the Boston Bruins prospect out of the 2020 playoff bubble where he could have gotten practice reps as a Black Ace and soaked up the experience. He used his extended 2020 off-season to hike the mountains and fish the rivers of Alaska training both his body and mind for the next chapter of his career.  Safe to say things worked out pretty good. Grab a beer, some Chowda and download to hear some great on and off the ice stories from his first season stopping pucks as a pro.

Steve nearly steals Keith Richards’ (Rolling Stones) girlfriend, gets exiled from Europe, and got in a bar fight with Nicholas Cage and the famous film duo the Coen Brothers. He played a little hockey along the way too. You can’t make this shit up. Saddle up and settle in for part two.

Keith came to Alaska in the fall of 1990 as a Seawolf recruit from Winnipeg, Manitoba. His sophomore season he put up 50 points in 36 games then earned a spot on the ’92-’93 Canadian National Team. Keith returned for his ’93-’94 senior season before leaving again to play pro hockey. In 2003 he found himself back on campus, but this time as an Assistant Coach for UAA. Those early days behind the bench bled into a passion for coaching and development. He has since coached and developed local players at all levels from Mites to U-18’s to High School to Juniors. He now takes on a new challenge in his hockey career by signing on as the Director of Hockey Operations of the Anchorage Wolverines, the newest team in the North American Hockey League. Download on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. Enjoy the story of his journey and hear all about what is happening behind the scenes to bring you junior hockey in Anchorage! #anchoragewolverines #NAHL #UAA #TeamCanada #THPN #dumpnchangepodcast

The book of Alaska hockey has had many chapters and there is still much to be written. An entire early chapter can be dedicated to Steve MacSwain and how he and his teammates in the 70’s and 80’s blazed the trail for generations to come. Born near the docks during the Seward Fishing Derby in 1965, his path from the pond to the Golden Gophers to pro hockey is remarkable. Grab a breakfast beer and settle in for the ride that is Steve MacSwain’s humbly told story.

UAA Head Coach Matt Curley and Asst. Coach Nick Walters dropped by the studio. The parallels Coach Curley draws between his own youth hockey journey idolizing college players to what could be lost for the next generation locally if the program dissolves is spot on and numbing. With possibly the toughest job in all of college sports right now he’s not only a D1 head coach, but also front and center of “Save Seawolf Hockey”.
