E35 THE OLD COUNTRY GENERAL STORE
Now, in the depths of winter, I am warmed by
memories of Hamm’s general store, with all the old timers gathered around the
wood burning stove, while the aroma of a $.25 cigar, chewing tobacco, a remnant
of pine tar on the floor, and smoke from the embers in the stove, all creating
a pleasing and unique atmosphere and symbolizing a vestige of an age long gone.
Memories of every Saturday evening when the black folks would show up and play
the banjos, juice harps, and guitars and we would all have a hoe down.
The old general stores of long ago stood as
beacons to anyone who needed most anything, especially a chance to talk. A trip
to the “general store” never disappointed. I feel sorry for today’s younger
generations who have missed out on a trip to a general store. The many trips to
Hamm’s was one of my youthful years’ joys.
