Earth-2.net Presents...

Both of this week's movies probably had a plot, but we couldn't bother following them. One of them had a lawyer, we think? Doesn't matter. We're here to sing the fiery, kick-punchy, bullet-riddled praises of this year's nominees in the category for Greatest Movies Called Above the Law, Not Starring Steven Seagal Division: 1989's Action USA and 1986's Righting Wrongs!

We're back, and it's Desmond's turn to interview Bryan about his Nic Cage fandom before they dive into a meaty review of Nicolas Coppola's feature film debut. Now, not even being Uncle Frank's nephew can guarantee a glorious film debut because, while the film is pretty widely considered a classic, our subject barely appears on-screen and utters zero lines. But why? Listen to our review of Fast Times at Ridgemont High to find out!

This week, Desmond and Tom finally sit down to talk about the Ken Russell masterpiece Altered States. Then, Desmond goes solo on a Dread Media Top 5 Transcendental / transformative Films. And all but one of the following songs were released in 2023: "Rebirth" by Night Demon, "Altered State" by Sepultura, "The Void" by Hail the Void, and "Everything is Endlessness" by Venomous Concept. The Brothers Wilson return to bring you the first proper episode of Hey, An Actor! for 2023, spotlighting Eddie Murphy. Trying to capture the eclectic talents of their subject in the space of three films is a tricky ask, but Ian and Pandy persevere with Murphy's 80s comedy hit Coming to America, his 90s hidden gem collaboration with Steve Martin Bowfinger, and his Oscar-nominated turn in Motown-inspired musical adaptation Dreamgirls. Along the way, Ian gets into his first-hand experience of radio payolas, Pandy is inspired to recite a song from one of the films should Ian ever marry, and we take a second trip to Culture Corner!

Richard Elfman and the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo brought their musical theatrical arthouse cabaret thing to the big screen with 1980's Forbidden Zone! Four decades later, Elfman made a movie where his son poops an obelisk after having sex with his stepmom! It's 2019's Aliens, Clowns and Geeks! We don't get paid for this!

It's a monster movie extravaganza this week here on Dread Media. In the first of a double feature with Desmond and Tom, a giant insect attacks a weird hospital in the bizarrely titled Blue Monkey. Then, we adventure on to look for the titular Troill of the Norwegian Netflix film. Finally, Desmond goes solo on a Dread Media Top 5 Unique Giant Monster Movies that is really just a stealth review for the horror comedy CRABS! Songs included: "Lovebite" by Haken, "Pregnant Insect" by Cobalt, "The Troll" by Cirith Ungol, Even Roger Corman Can't Save You Now" by Mike Trebilcock, and "Hall of the Mountain King" by Apocalyptica. In this inaugural episode, Bryan first interviews co-host Desmond about his Nic Cage fandom before the two settle into a review of the failed 1981 TV pilot featuring the first film work of Nic Cage (nee Coppola): The Best of Times. It's got comedy, singing, dancing, Jackie Mason, and dramatic monologues? And in case this all wasn't weird enough, it also features the first film work of heartthrob Crispin Glover!

After two dozen episodes, Part of Your World finally reaches a key milestone in the history of Disney's animated output: the tide-turning yet timeless The Little Mermaid. In the show's longest single film review yet, Christian and guest co-host Mixie dive deep into a film near and dear to both of them, surveying everything from its sublime, siren-worthy songs and the original Hans Christian Andersen tale to the film's infamous initial VHS cover, and the great (and now late) Pat Carroll and Rene Auberjenois.
