Why does Mark's Gospel end without a single post-resurrection appearance of Jesus? Why does he end with the ladies who are at the tomb and hear from the angel about Jesus saying nothing about him? What is it that keeps threatening us on a daily basis - giant beasts? flood waters? snares/traps? The psalmist knew what it meant to walk through this hazardous life with God at his side. We can have the same trust in YHWH's name, which is our help.

In Psalm 123 we have another chance to "lift up our eyes." This time we do it as those who know what it means to serve a great Master. In learning to seek His mercy, we can find a way past the contempt that our hearts long to hold on to against the world.
