What is the most important thing in life to be about? Why are the good and bad things in life seemingly so mixed together? Do people have any advantage at all over animals in the perspective of eternity? These are the questions that have plagued people forever. Qohelet has an answer...sort of.

The author continues to be perplexed by the way the world works, asking the question if anything that he has spent his life doing holds any perpetual value. Ultimately, he winds up making his first statement about the need to enjoy the gifts of God in one's life on a daily basis.

The author asks if there is something in life to which we can apply ourselves that will lead to ultimate fulfillment? Out of all the things he tries, including chasing wisdom, pleasure, indulging in wine, sensuousness, workaholism, materialism and more, in the end he is still unfulfilled. He can only again cry, "Incomprehensible!"

Who is Qoheleth and what does he have to say that is so important that it should be in God's Word? What does "vanity of vanities" even mean? Is there a point to existence and is there any kind of wisdom that can help us get to the heart of that question? There are answers to these mysteries and the Holy Spirit wants to guide us through this strange book to help us discover what they are. Even though this first poem sounds a bit depressing, the author is actually going to much more beautiful (and meaningful) place.
