Eben Alexander’s story is unique among the annals of near-death experiences. As a practicing neurosurgeon, Eben was trained within the “body as machine” paradigm of scientific materialism. In this paradigm, everything in the physical world, including the body, can be reduced to mindless particles obeying the impersonal laws of nature.  Life has no meaning or purpose, God is dead and heaven is a figment of the imagination. This thing we call consciousness – the awareness of being here – arises from brain neurons and is nothing special.

In 2008, Eben contacted a rare case of meningitis and entered a deep, week-long coma, bringing him close to death.  During this near-death experience he entered a “super-real,” heaven-like world that he vividly recounts in his best-selling book, Proof of Heaven.  This experience brought upon an abrupt change in his worldview, as he now understood that scientific materialism could not explain what he went through; instead, a united consciousness must underly the world, not mindless particles of materialism.
