Ecofictology

Hey ecofictologists and welcome to episode 16 of the Ecofictology podcast! We are back with another Spells and Specialist month of episodes, this time with the wonderful Corri Moss-Hunter who is going to teach us everything about therapy, functional behaviours and something called Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy which blew my mind. Of course I have my wonderful cohost Clark Rowenson with me, the magic engineer, and we really enjoyed nerding out with Corri so we hope you do to. This is an archived episode from my youtube channel so if you prefer the visual medium, you can find the link in the shownotes. I hope you enjoy

Hey ecofictologists and welcome to episode 15 of the Ecofictology podcast! This week we are doing a bit more of a definitions episode and talking about all the various -opias that we come across in ecofiction. Dystopia and Utopia are the most well known and there is a lot of controversy about how much of either of them we need, but then there are some less well-known ones in there like ustopia coined by margaret Atwood and Optopia coined by Kim Stanley Robinson, two big names in the ecofiction world. Interesting differences between all the opias so let’s get into it. This episode is made up of two archived episodes from my youtube channel so if you prefer the visual medium, you can find the links in the shownotes. I hope you enjoy

Hey ecofictologists and welcome to episode 14 of the Ecofictology podcast! Following on from the book review that you got on Monday, here is the interview with the wonderful Octavia cade all about her novella The Impossible Resurrection of Grief, which touches on these concepts of ecogrief and ecoanxiety in a terrifying magical realism kind of way. I so much enjoyed talking to her with my cohost Forrest Brown, we were both incredibly excited to be able to chat with her, so I hope you are excited to hear it. As usual, This is an archived episode from my youtube channel so if you prefer the visual medium, you can find the link in the shownotes. I hope you enjoy

This book is bittersweet for me as you will find out, i loved it and it broke my heart all at the same time but i can’t recommend it highly enough and yes i do fangirl in the interview. Octavia cade is just wonderful. As usual, This is an archived episode from my youtube channel so if you prefer the visual medium, you can find the link in the shownotes. I hope you enjoy

Hey ecofictologists and welcome to episode 12 of the Ecofictology podcast! This week we are talking about something that comes up all the time in the ecofiction/climate fiction circles that I am involved in and it is of course ecogrief. There are many terms for it, climate anxiety, climate grief, eco aniety but whatever you want to call it, it is real and it can be debilitating and often we talk about it in the context of climate fiction being majority dystopian (which i’m not even really sure is true) and that it is depressing seeing a future without hope. We need some hope. So in this episode i talk about what ecogrief is and whether a little genre called solarpunk can help you cope with it. This is made up of two archived episodes from my youtube channel so if you prefer the visual medium, you can find the links in the shownotes. I hope you enjoy

Hey ecofictologists and welcome to today’s Monday minisode which is a book review of Clade by James Bradley. This book really brings the climate crisis to your doorstep and lets you experience what it might feel like to live through the coming decades. It's so real and plausible that the story sucks you right in. This is an archived episode from my youtube channel so if you prefer the visual medium, you can find the link in the shownotes. I hope you enjoy.

Hey ecofictologists and welcome to episode 11 of the Ecofictology podcast! This week I am introducing you to my good friend Forrest Brown who runs his own podcast called Stories for Earth and we overlap a lot in what we like to focus on so of course our paths crossed and I’m so glad that they did. We decided to do this episode together because...sigh...some books are too ....much to do on your own. Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler is a staple in the ecofiction sphere and I have to tell you, i found it very heavy. Incredibly poignant and important and scarily prophetic but heavy. So i invited Forrest to come talk about it with me. This is an archived episode from my youtube channel, although i think that is a shortened version but you still get the bulk of it, so if you prefer the visual medium, you can find the link in the shownotes. I hope you enjoy

Hey ecofictologists and welcome to episode 10 of the Ecofictology podcast! This Monday’s Minisode is one that I put together back in 2020, June 2020 to be exact, when i felt that anything else i had on my list of things to talk about felt out of place and tonedeaf considering everything that was happening around me and in the world. My platform was tiny and it’s still small now but I still wanted to use what I do have to amplify the beautiful black voices in ecofiction. They really enrich the genre and I for one am so incredibly grateful that they have shared their stories and their imaginations with us all. I can't recommend them highly enough! If you would prefer to watch this episode, there’s a link to the youtube video in the show notes. I hope you enjoy.

Hey ecofictologists and welcome to episode 9 of the Ecofictology podcast! This week is the final part of our Spells and Specialists episode with Dr. Moiya McTier and we brainstorm a story that communicates her wonderful science through the medium of the magic system that we created last week with Clark’s magic system blueprint. I love this story and actually as I am recording this intro, i am working on writing this story so i am DEEP in the trenches of these characters and this conflict so I may be biased but I think this story is really bloody cool. This is an archived episode from my youtube channel so if you prefer the visual medium, you can find the link in the shownotes. I hope you enjoy

Hey ecofictologists and welcome to episode 8 of the Ecofictology podcast! This week is part 3 of our Spells and Specialists episode with Dr. Moiya McTier where we finally build a magic system based on our astrophysics seed crystal of everyone having little personal stars. I have to say, i’m obsessed with this seed crystal and with the magic system we created out of it so i hope you get as giddy as we did. This episode uses the Magic System Blueprint which Clark created and which you can buy for yourself if you like the sound of what we do in this episode and think it would be applicable to your own projects. This is an episode with a large visual component, hopefully you can follow along as we talk about the various factors and parameters in the blueprint but if you would prefer to see what we are seeing on Clark’s screen, then you can follow the link in the description to his yt channel, the magic engineer and watch as we play with levers and sliders and such. Its good fun but hopefully you get a lot out of just the audio part of this as well. So, I hope you enjoy!
