“Death is a stripping away of all that is not you. The secret of life is to ‘die before you die’ — and find that there is no death.” – Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
Healthy Living on the Road
Balancing health and exercise is a difficult task for many long-term travelers.
How do we indulge in the foods and drinks of a culture without destroying our bodies? Or, erasing what we’ve done health wise before traveling?
Healthy living might not be your main focus if your trip is only a week or two. But, what happens when you’re traveling for a long time like six months or more? You don’t want to ignore your body, mental health, and eat like crap for every meal.
How do we maintain and improve our physical health, eating habits, mentality, and spirit without equipment or consistent areas to practice?
Phillip Louie from Episode 12 joins the podcast to explore these questions.
Healthy living for terms of our conversation includes: exercise, nutrition, mental and spiritual health.
Phillip is traveling around Asia while on a 6-month leave from the Canadian Army Reserves. He joined the reserves in Vancouver, Canada in 2012.
Beyond the army, Phillip is one of the most focused persons I’ve met in terms of fitness and living healthy – especially while on the road for so long.
Growing up, Phillip played baseball, basketball, soccer, wrestling, track & field, and football. His identity as an athlete, which he discusses further, was jeopardized after a tough playoff loss in football. This led him to focus on health as a way of life instead of strictly sports.
Now, he is constantly researching and experimenting how to maintain and improve healthy living in creative ways. This includes experimenting with things like fasting, ketogenic diets, tai chi, martial arts, and gymnastics strength training.
Some of the other topics we discuss include:
* The Canadian Army Reserves
* Gymnastics strength training
* Mobility and joint work
* Tai chi and meditation
* Intermittent fasting
and so much more!
